It is said that Maudsley kept that instrument in a room where no one could see it, only when there was a measurement dispute in the factory, he would use that instrument to take a measure and get to a conclusion. Now-days micrometer's origins dates back to the French Palmer whom got the patent in 1848, it was an epochal invention which easily allowed to take precision-measurement.
