モーズレーは人に見えない部屋にこの測定器を置き、寸法の争いが工場で生じたときに、この測定器で測定して判定を下したといわれている。 現在のマイクロメータの基になるものは、フランスのパーマが１８４８年に特許を得たもので、手軽に精密測定ができるものとして画期的なものであった。
１８６７年パリ万国博覧会に出品されていたパーマのマイクロメータを見たブラウンとシャープは、その一台を購入して帰った。
そしてその改良を試み、１８６８年に初めて一台の携帯用のマイクロメータの製作に成功した。
