１８６７年パリ万国博覧会に出品されていたパーマのマイクロメータを見たブラウンとシャープは、その一台を購入して帰った。

そしてその改良を試み、１８６８年に初めて一台の携帯用のマイクロメータの製作に成功した。

Maudslay is said to have kept this measuring instrument in his private room and, when a quarrel of dimensions occurred in the factory, measured them with it and judged. The base of the current micrometer is the one that Palmer of France acquired a patent in 1848. It was a an epoch-making device making easy and precise measurement possible.

Brown and Sharp saw Palmer's micrometer exhibited at Paris World Exposition of 1867 and purchased one to bring it home.

And they attempted to improve it and succeeded at producing a portable micrometer for the first time in 1868.
