The Sky Drone FPV is an onboard camera system that you attach to a drone, and costs $499.00 with a 112-degree field of view lens. The gadget ships to buyers in January. While acknowledging to Tech in Asia that Bitcoin is “still an inefficient market leading to arbitrage opportunities and speculation,” he believes the growth in “exchanges, market makers, and wallets” will lead to more volume and liquidity but decrease margins for speculative behavior.

CoinJar has been doing its part by securing partnerships with goods and service providers to increase merchant adoption of the currency in Australia. As a result, crowdfunding site Pozible and utility vehicle producer Tomcar have begun accepting bitcoin through CoinJar’s payment gateway.

Bitcoin has been on a roll of late, soaring to over $1,100 a bitcoin. According to Bitcoincharts.com, the value of all bitcoins is now worth over $12 billion.

This has enriched many early investors, but has also caused other bitcoin miners to grovel in grief after accidentally throwing away millions in dollars worth of the currency.

Atomico, Venture Capital Founded by Skype Founder, Announced $476 Million Series C Financing

Atomico, an international venture capital founded in 2006 by co-founder of Skype Niklas Zennström, announced $476 million of Series C Financing, three times the size of previous fund and oversubscribed. Investors of this round, alongside the general partners, come from across Asia, the US and Europe, including the EIF.

Atomico helps entrepreneurs, primarily those outside Silicon Valley, to meet their challenges. It focuses exclusively on the technology sector, with investments ranging from small seed investments to larger growth investments. The company reportedly has made over 50 investments over four continents. Atomico operates with a single, international structure composed of two core teams; the value creation team, and the investment team.

There are, according to Alibaba, more than 7 million stores on Alibaba platform and over ten million working at those stores. Most of them are in their twenties or early thirties. Alibaba found that 55% of store owners and 45% of their employees are not covered by Social Security. Only 27% of owners and employees are covered by business insurance.

Through Leyebao store owners can buy policies for both themselves and employees. If a employee left one store for another, the policy would still work.

Two policies have already been on the platform. One is on death and cancer that requires a customer to pay 10 yuan (less than 2 dollars) per month; the other is for hospital stays that requires 5 yuan (less than one dollar) per month.

Leyebao will be added to Alipay Wallet, the mobile payment and service app of Alibaba, in this year that customers can manage their policies from mobile.

Online Food Ordering Service Ele.me Raised $25 million in Series C Led by Sequoia China

Chinese online food ordering site Ele.me announced that it has raised $25 million in Series C funding, led by Sequoia China and joined by existing investors GSR Ventures and Matrix Partners China.

Eleme — “are you hungry” in Chinese — was founded in 2008 and based in Shanghai. It’s website and apps enable users to search for restaurants nearby and make orders. Users don’t have to register with the service for ordering food. Ele.me doesn’t offer delivery support.

The service has had 20,000 partner restaurants in 12 Chinese cities. In 2012 the total sales through Ele.me was 600 million yuan (a little less than $100 mn), out of which the fees the company received was about 10 million yuan (about $16 mn), Eleme told ForbesChina earlier this year (in Chinese). The company charged restaurants 8% of the total sales in early days but later on started charging a fixed fee which is more acceptable with merchants.

Ele.me raised Series A from GSR Ventures in early 2011 and Series B from GSR and Matrix Partners China in early 2013. The company has over 200 employees.

8villages raises $150,000 to help businesses reach out to rural farmers

Singapore-based 8villages has completed its $150,000 convertible note pre-Series A round from IMJ Fenox.

8villages connects farmers and agribusinesses together through its platform, allowing a more transparent flow of information within the agriculture value chain.

8villages’ platform allows agribusinesses to reach out to farmers located in the rural area, who usually are on feature phones. Audience can be targeted by identifying farmer communities based on crop types and location. It is estimated that there are over 40 million farmers in Indonesia.

8villages was one of our Arena pitching contestants in April this year in Startup Asia Singapore.

Prior to building 8villages, Mathieu Le Bras had experiences building businesses in China and France. He also worked ten years as an agronomist, wearing the hat of an Asia Pacific marketing strategist for a major agribusiness corporation.

Fan is a bio nerd. In particular, he’s fascinated by the micro living organisms called cells that combine to form even more intricate living things. Referring to them as if they were human beings (“They eat and shit in the petri-dish at the same time”, he told Tech in Asia in a one-to-one interview), he explained how their sociable nature is key to understanding the potential impact of bio 3D printers.

Cells need to be aligned in a certain way to in order for them to interact with one another. Once they are aligned, we can let nature take its course.

Such exact arrangements by artificial means is unprecedented, until the arrival of bio 3D printers.

Business model

Bio3D’s first commercial model can blood vessel cells, but it will be years before it can print full organs and really disrupt an industry. The printer sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars a pop and includes after-sales service.

Fan hopes to shift five units next year, and the company is already in sales talks with potential customers. Research institutions, universities, and drug companies are some organizations that would be interested in the printer.

Like most countries, Indonesia is still in the very early stages of Bitcoin adoption, but Ayoub says people are gradually warming to it. “Because Bitcoin solves some of the typical problems of emerging and developing countries such as large unbanked population and restricted credit card access,” Ayoub says, “we anticipate that adoption will take places earlier in countries like Indonesia than in advanced economies like the US or Europe.”
