As of September 2012, Douban had 62 million registered users. Combing the unregistered audience who only read content created by Douban users, it covered over 100 million unique visitors each month, with 160 million daily page-views. Not big numbers at all by Chinese standards. But Douban doesn’t seem like a company that would inflate numbers that far that some of its Chinese peers do. Founded in 2005, Douban’s valuables include user-generated quality content and niche user groups.

As the end of this year is approaching, let’s do some speculations on where and how Douban can pull together the 80 million revenue.

Cooliris launches social photo discovery mobile app in China with Renren integration

Cooliris has launched its first international version in China, and users can now integrate Renren photos into the app’s immersive media-centric experience.

If there are two things that smartphones and tablets have been extremely useful for, it’s for taking photos and for social networking. Case in point: Instagram grew to millions of users even without having a desktop web interface. But it’s not enough to share photos and view photos by friends. Cooliris, which was among the developers of the stock Android photo browser, says it’s more important to give users an “immersive experience” in viewing and sharing photos.

A Vision of Vietnam’s Internet Future?

In dusty, cramped rooms across Vietnam, kids and adults log on to the web in internet shops. It’s a common sight on every other street in Vietnam, from major urban areas to the farthest-flung rural regions. Family businesses clear out their first floor lobbies, mount fans on walls, and install rows upon rows of desktop PCs to rent out web-time at an hourly rate. It’s a stable business because kids and teenagers want video games, adults want info and email, and everybody watches YouTube and downloads free music.

With Vietnam’s internet penetration at 34.3 percent, roughly four percent over the world internet penetration average, and is one of the largest populations in Southeast Asia on the internet. Vietnam’s netizens are ranked 18th in the world with over 31 million people online.

2012 marks the 15th anniversary of Vietnam’s official connection to the internet. Gone are the days when people had to sneak in dial-up modems through customs to access the internet just to email their friends abroad. In the last 10 years, Vietnam’s internet population has increased 15-fold but government ministers and leaders of Vietnam’s still-growing internet landscape remain thirsty for more.

He sees the ministries as playing a significant role in encouraging these developments as well as preparing Vietnamese IT companies to compete on a global stage.

JEFFERIES: The iPhone 5S Is Coming Next June In 6-8 Colors

Apple will release an iPhone 5S in June, a break from the pattern it's established over the last two years, says Jefferies analyst Peter Misek in a note this morning.

Misek is predicting the iPhone 5S has a new "super HD camera/screen, a better battery, and NFC," and "possible updates include an IGZO screen for Retina+, 128GB storage." He's also predicting it comes in 6-8 colors, presumably similar to the iPod Touch which comes in a bunch of colors.

In addition to the music section, Qihoo’s 360 Search also now has a streaming video section that aggregates movies and TV series from the likes of Youku, Tudou, and LeTV. Again, this is an area where Qihoo might develop its own in-house service in the future.

Qihoo’s founder and CEO is hoping that the fledgling search engine can take 15 to 20 percent of the search market in China. Currently, it has just under 10 percent, which is good going for a three-month old product. But it’ll be a challenge to grow it from there.

That’s pretty unethical, but it pales in comparison to what reporters heard from the Yinggao ad agency representative: “This thing [our platform] is like having a tracking device installed on you. Wherever you go, we’ll know about it; as long as you’re connected to the network we’ll know.” The Wabang rep said that they could track clients too.

In information is gathered via plug-ins that come bundled with the software served by these advertising agencies, plug-ins that run unnoticed in the background. They can share your location, your phone number, and other personal data with the ad agencies, and in fact, they can even share your address book.

Citing rather vague “industry statistics,” CCTV’s report suggests that this kind of advertising is quite common, so if you’ve got a smartphone in China, there’s a decent chance you could be affected, especially if you’re using any pirated apps. If you’re concerned about this, I’d recommend deleting any apps from developers you don’t trust, and replacing any pirated apps you’ve got with the real thing. Sure, it might cost a little extra to buy the real version, but it’s more than worth the cost in peace of mind.

Banjo, on the other hand, has opted to expand on its original formula for social discovery apps by providing tools to discover what your connections are doing in specific locations elsewhere in the world, rather than just nearby. Now, Banjo is expanding on that idea with a complete overhaul of its iPhone and Android apps.
