Indonesia’s Internet penetration highest by social media, expected to hit 76M Internet users by 2015

The Internet space in Indonesia is exploding, with an estimated 76 million users by 2015.

Indonesia has been tagged as one of the Southeast Asian startup ecosystem to watch. We see venture capitals flocking in, incubators setting up, more and more local events held by the local communities, and more media coverage from the region. DailySocial compiled a handy list of tech investors which includes East Ventures, Merah Putih, GDP Ventures, Ideosource as well as a handful of others. Behind these are several facts and country data that backs this huge growth in interest towards this country.

To give you a better idea of why the Indonesian tech scene is on fire, here’s an informative video put up by Senry Alvin, shared by Danny Wirianto on his Mindtalk channel, which paints a clear picture of the huge growth in the country which has more than 17,000 islands:

Adding on to this, Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, also agrees with the huge opportunity in Indonesia in an interview with Huffington Post last year. “You have 180 million cell phones, but did you know that you have only about 18 percent Internet penetration?” said Schmidt. “You’re going to have an Internet explosion.”

Over 3000 people attended Echelon 2012 and the 6 regional Satellites, out of which over 1000 attended our main Echelon 2012 event from 11th to 12th June.
Echelon 2012′s attendees came from over 30 countries.
65.5% of our Echelon 2012 attendees are from Singapore.
Echelon 2012 was attended by over 200 investors.
Singapore was the top country with 17 startups exhibiting, followed by six startups each from Japan, Taiwan and Indonesia.

その内65.5%はシンガポールからのご来場者でした。
Echelon2012には200名以上の投資家の皆様のご参加がありました。

It is indeed the first major deal we’ve seen in China’s fragmented and costly daily deals market, where the current market leader is the startup Meituan. FTuan was in fourth eighth place last time we looked, while Gaopeng was still losing market share way out of the top ten.

Tencent’s new CEO of its recently spun-off e-commerce division said:

The new joint entity will combine the strengths of FTuan and Gaopeng to better serve consumers in the daily deals market in China. We believe group-buying is a natural leverage off our large user base.

これは、細分化されコスト高となっている中国の日用品取引の市場で初となる巨大案件である。現在のマーケットリーダーはスタートアップ企業のMeituanである。Ftuanは以前に確認した時には4位から8位の間だった。その間Geopengはシェアを失い続けトップ10からかんらくしてしまった。

最近e-commerce部門を分離したTencentの新しいCEOはつぎのように述べている。

この新たな共同体によって、FtuanとGEOPENG双方の強みを活かし、中国の日用品市場の顧客により良いサービスを提供することが可能となった。共同購入は我々ユーザーベースの向上に貢献することだろう。

Meanwhile, Groupon’s Jason Harinstein, commented:

For Groupon, this transaction is the next logical step in our strategy to strengthen our investment in China. Tencent has been a great partner, and we are excited to continue our partnership with them. We are also looking forward to working with the FTuan team to provide Chinese consumers and merchants with more compelling offerings.

一方でGrouponのJason Harinsteinは次のようにコメントした。

Indonesia’s Top Two Banks Launch Online Payments Platforms, Finally

At the end of January, two of the biggest banks in Indonesia launched payment solutions for e-commerce purposes. BCA (IDX:BBCA), the biggest private bank in the country, launched a product named KlikPay, while Mandiri (IDX:BMRI), the state-owned enterprise bank, launched ClickPay. Who knows whether the timing was coincidental or not.

1月末、インドネシアの2大銀行がEコマース向けの支払いソリューションの提供を開始した。インドネシア最大の民間銀行BCA (IDX:BBCA)は、KlickPayと呼ばれる製品を発表した。一方国営銀行のMandiri (IDX:BMRI)もClickPayを発表している。この発表のタイミングは偶然だろうか？

BCA’s KlikPay claims it has advantages such as easy and secure online payment whenever and wherever you are. So users don’t need to have any additional authorization hardware since you can use its disposable OTP (One Time Password) that can be sent via SMS to your mobile phone. You can simply register yourself on the bank’s site, activate your account, and use it right away. So far, BCA has Bhinekka, BliBli, CBN, Gudang Voucher, and Living Social as its online partners.

BCAのKlikPay は、どこでもいつでも安全かつ簡単にオンラインでの支払いがおこなえることを唄っている。携帯宛てにSMSで送信される、破棄可能なOTP（ワンタイムパスワード）を利用することにより、追加の認証機器の必要性を省いている。銀行のサイトで登録し、アカウントを有効化するだけですぐに使用可能だ。現在までに、BCAは、Bhinekka, BliBli, CBN, Gudang Voucher, Living Socialをオンラインパートナーとして獲得している。

Meanwhile Mandiri’s ClickPay also has the same easy authorization using a combo of the user’s 16-digit Mandiri debit card and a special PIN token to validate the transaction you want to make. People can activate the service on the Mandiri banking website or the nearest ATM, and then when you’re next doing a spot of online shopping you can simply choose the Mandiri ClickPay option on one of the merchant’s websites. Bank Mandiri boasts 8 e-commerce partners so far: Garuda Indonesia, Plasa.com, IndoMOG, Rakuten, BliBli, EnjoySpin.com, Kagum Hotel, and Bhinekka.

With two of the biggest banks in the country finally supporting the e-commerce industry with a decent payments solution, this will prove a boost to the whole ecosystem – to startups as well as the online retailing giants. Payment has been one of the biggest roadblocks in monetizing startups in Indonesia and perhaps with the help of both KlikPay and ClickPay as options, it’ll educate consumers and give them greater reassurance about shopping online.

A Chinese Perspective: Why Foreign Companies Fail, and How To Succeed In China

Henry Hua, founder and CEO of IDFsoft, a startup company focusing on mobile gaming and gamification, took to the stage at the National University of Singapore (NUS) School of Computing (SoC) last Friday and shared with us certain insights as to how foreign entrepreneurs should go about entering the Chinese market.

As most of us are well aware, many foreign Internet giants tend to lose their foothold in the Chinese Internet industry. That is the sad reality, but why is it happening and why are the subsequent players not learning from the previous failures?

携帯ゲームとゲーミフィケーションに特化したスタートアップ企業IDF softのCEO Henry Huaは、先週金曜日にシンガポール国立大学（NUS）のコンピューティング学科で講演し、外国の起業家の中国市場への参入に関する知見を披露した。

多くの人々がすでに気付いているが、多くのInternet業界の巨人たちが中国インターネット市場で足場を築くことに失敗している。これは悲しいことであるが、なぜこのようなことが起こるのであろうか？　そしてなぜ後続の企業は先人の失敗に学ぶことが出来ないのであろうか？

One famous example he cited was Google China, which ultimately came down to – quite apart from the hacking controversy that so soured relations between it and authorities – a very different view of how to let people access the web. Unfortunately, this has resulted in Google losing its market share in China and it is currently struggling to fight for its online mapping license in the country.

Similar cases do happen to other Internet giants such as eBay, Amazon, Yahoo, MySpace, and Groupon. So what are the various factors that contribute to all their failures? Mr. Hua, in his talk, identified these seven areas:

Government and Policies Makes Foreign Entry Impossible

彼が引用した有名な例の一つは、完全に幕を下ろしてしまったGoogle Chainaだ。Googleと当局の関係を危機にさらしたハッキングに関する議論はさておき、両者は人民がwebにアクセスする方法に関して全く異なった見方をしていた。不幸なことに、これによりGoogleは中国市場でのシェアを失い、現在は、中国でのオンライン地図のライセンスに関して争っている最中である。

Henry shared that especially for the Internet industry, almost no sole foreign investor – without a joint-venture (JV) partner; more on that later – is able to obtain the mandatory Internet Content Provider (ICP) license. These tend to be restricted so as to prevent Chinese citizens viewing some ‘sensitive’ material from foreign websites.

Hence, one of the most common approaches done by most foreign entrants is partnerships, such as Groupon did with Tencent.

On top of which, one would need many business licenses in order to operate in China. Additional business licenses are very high barriers themselves because one would need to understand which license is required for which side of the business operations.

そのため、外国からの参入者に共通するアプローチは、GrouponがTencentと結んだようなパートナーシップを結ぶことである。

それに加え、中国で事業を展開するには多数のライセンスを取得しなければならないという事情がある。どちら側での事業についてどのライセンスが必要なのかを判断しなければならないため、追加のライセンスの取得はとても高い参入障壁となっている。

You will need: a container, a heating pad, dog kibble, hot sugar water,...
...a bowl, a spoon, hard-boiled eggs, baby cereal, toothpicks, canned cat or dog food, lean raw beef and fruit.
Step 1 : Place the baby bird in a container on top of a heating pad to keep it warm.
Handle the bird only when necessary.
Step 2 : Prepare the food by soaking dog kibble in hot sugar water for one hour.
Step 3 : Remove the kibble from the water and mix it with baby cereal and a hard-boiled egg.
