I'm somewhat of a Gunpla builder so I'm really jealous that you can actually go to the SOURCE (i.e. Bandai) to get whatever you need.. even for paint, brushes, etc! It's quite a shame Gundam isn't really popular in North America. =/ Not only do I love building Gunpla I'm somewhat of a car enthusiast and if I ever did go to Japan I wanted to check out the race tracks there (i.e. Tsukuba, Fuji Speedway, etc) and the mountain touge roads (i.e. Akina, Akagi, Irohazaka, etc). xD

Amazon China CEO: B2C is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

B2C in China is big business, and it’s a big business that Alibaba’s Tmall is currently kind of dominating. Taking a gander at the chart below might be intimidating for anyone running a B2C site in China that isn’t Tmall, but it doesn’t phase Amazon China’s CEO Wang Hanhua. In an interview with Southern Metropolis, he said that B2C is a marathon, not a sprint:

I’m most concerned with whether or not you’ve prepared for the marathon, whether or not you will be the final victor. When there are three to five companies left in the market at the end, will you be one of them?

Google Starts Work on Data Center in Taiwan

Internet search giant Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) today announced that it has started building a new data center in Changhua County in Taiwan, and has plans for limited testing and bringing it online in the second half of 2013.

This will be the third data center for Google in Asia, as it’s also working on two others which have yet to be completed. Those two centers in Singapore and Hong Kong are both scheduled to be completed in early 2013. But according to Google, the Taiwan data center will “be the first in [its] fleet to save energy through a nighttime cooling and thermal energy storage system.”

China’s Group Messaging Giant to Get English Name, WeChat, and Go Global

Weixin is already the world’s biggest group messaging app, having last week accrued 100 million users. But that was achieved mostly thanks to enthusiastic Chinese users. Now, new reports suggest that Tencent (HKG:0700), China’s social media giant, will give its app an English name – WeChat – in order to take it international.

The WeChat branding will come in v4.0 of the app which is due in the coming weeks. Already, Tencent has snagged the wechat.me URL but has not yet made the name changes evident on the site. The reasoning perhaps is that ‘Weixin’ is a puzzle to pronounce to non-Chinese speakers, especially that ‘x’ which would probably be mis-pronounced as ‘z’ or ‘s’ by speakers of most other languages (actually it’s fairly close to the English ‘sh’ phonic sound).

The popular group-messaging app already added an English localization in October of last year, along with support for sign-up via SMS in over 100 countries. Also, it already supports third-party Facebook sign-in as a parallel to the Tencent QQ login that many of its Chinese users employ. This rebranding seems to be the final step in its makeover.

The website just launched a revamp ten days back, introducing new and improved features, such as better search functions. Users can now toggle their search based on “images” or “profiles preferences,” and the results can be filtered according to its time, popularity, and the number of ‘likes.’ Members can then ‘like’ or comment on the artworks, as well as follow or message other members.

With the increasing number of users using Pinterest, it is a sensible move for the team to add in Pinterest to increase the eyeballs on the creative works. It’s also great that there’s a Sina Weibo sharing button too.

The website looks pretty sleek and clean, but it places much emphasis on the images and it neglects the text organization on the website. Maybe I’m just a little OCD, but when you visit someone’s portfolio, you get the visual porn at first but as you scroll down, it kinda turns you off if the brief description, clientele, resume, and awards area is messy, say, if the user doesn’t bother with proper paragraphs for example.

The Singapore-based company was started by Alex Goh, who is also founder at DesignTAXI and Singapore’s official representative for New York Festivals. It also has Dan Brody, Google China’s first employee and Spotify’s Asia Pacific general manager on board with them.

Facebook Buys Instagram, Tencent Made an ‘Instagram’

The biggest news on the tech startup radar is of course Facebook’s enormous acquisition of mobile photo sharing app, Instagram for US$1 Billion in cash and stock.

It doesn’t really surprise me that Facebook bought Instagram because I heard Facebook’s CTO Bret Taylor at Mobile World Congress reiterate that the future of Facebook is in mobile.

Instagram’s exit is amazing given that the company is only made up of a few people and has amassed a user base of 30 million plus continues to be one of the most downloaded photo apps ever.

Innovation Camp (iCamp), the new Internet startup accelerator and incubator opens in Shanghai. Located at the KIC high-tech and Innovation Park in Shanghai YangPu district, iCamp will focus on the internet and mobile application and provide systematic startup coaching and incubation to the SoLoMo application projects. In addition, iCamp also provides $2m seed funding named China Startup Republic (CSR) Fund .

iCamp is founded by 4 very experienced entrepreneurs with mix of local and international background. Quite Silicon Valley style, is the impression we got about iCamp. It’s not just about angel investment, it’s more about mentorship. As Jun introduced, iCamp now has >30 international coaches and advisers who come from different background and help on the growth of startups incubated in iCamp. Furthermore, iCamp is also building a close relationship with silicon valley ecosystem. “Dave McClure is also one of our advisors and come to coach our startups.” Jun said, “His famous incubator 500Startups is iCamp’s partner, and we are planning to bring our startups to their place to experience the spirit of silicon valley.” 150 startups to be incubated within 4 years, Jun has set up the goal for iCamp.

Two startups have joined iCamp, 4jia1 is a mobile social network with focus on users’ health & fitness, and Moboq (our coverage in Chinese), is a location-based mobile Q&A application.

2件のスタートアップがiCampに参加した。4jia1はモバイルソーシャルネットワークでユーザーの健康とフィットネスに特化している。また、Moboq（弊誌中国語版にて紹介済み）は地理情報提供を基本としたQ&Aタイプの携帯アプリである。

What I like most is its location feature. A user can pull out his phone and view information relating to your curent area. For example, if you’re at Tokyo Tower, Goocus will point you to the page describing Tokyo Tower.

The service is pretty simple. And while it’s not the first service to put Wikipedia information on a map, it’s still undeniably useful – especially with the social element thrown in. Satoshi Yamawaki, founder of Castalia, said that the app is now only for Wikipedia, but he does have plans to add other content in the near future.
