SOS For Blackberry?

The danger might lie in the future, when people who have tried out both Blackberry and Android devices will come to the conclusion that Android, having more games and more fun entertainment apps, is simply a better platform for them. And the blinding progress of chat apps in the country, such as WeChat and KakaoTalk, points to BBM becoming overshadowed too.

RIM seriously needs to worry about one of its biggest markets (if not the biggest). Especially if one of those chat apps can convince mobile telcos to start selling BBM-like packages whereby online messaging is separate from your mobile data allowance. Now THAT would be the beginning of the end for RIM, unless the long-awaited Blackberry 10 can turn a lot of heads – and change a lot of minds. Because right now, Android is looking like the most appealing mobile OS of all for Indonesia’s most clued-up gadget fans.

Japanese App ‘Watching Cute Girl’ Makes Sure You’re Never Alone

Here’s an app from Japan that is totally ridiculous, and probably not worth paying for — but I can’t help but share it anyway.

Ningen Inc’s ‘Watching Cute Girl’ iOS app has a number of different and equally bizarre features. Essentially, it’s just an on-screen girl who watches over you, occasionally reacting to various inputs like sound or movement. There are 180 pre-recorded video patterns that can be played back, depending on the situation or settings. All those behaviors have resulted in a pretty bloated app though, as it’s a 314 MB download.

日本発ふざけすぎなアプリ、一円の価値もなさそうーなのにシェアせずにはおられない。

Ningen Incの「キュートガールウォッチング」iOSアプリにはいくつもの奇妙な機能がついている。
絶対にはずせないのは、画面上の女の子が君をみつめ、時折音や動きに反応する。180パターンの録画ビデオがシチュエーションや場所によってプレイバックする。これらの行動だけでアプリは増幅中、314MBもダウンロードされている。

Actor Kendo Kobayashi supposedly has some input in how this app was developed, and there’s actually a mode that when switched on will address you as Mr. Kobayashi. So if your surname actually is Kobayashi, perhaps you might want to buy this app.

It’s currently on sale for the promotional price of 85 yen (or $0.99), and I’m not even sure it would be worth it at that price. I’m half-tempted though, just to make the home office a little more interesting.

Yes, umbrellas. Founder Ikari Kazuo previously ran a peculiar business involving the recovery of forgotten and ‘abandoned’ umbrella in Tokyo. He then took these umbrellas and offered a free umbrella rental service at cafes and restaurants along Shibuya, Tokyo. According to Ikari-san, he felt that an item that had become ‘void of use’ need not necessarily mean it was of no use to someone else. In other words, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.

He then capitalized on the strong trends such as social media and fashion to create Whytelist. Although services such as Yahoo! Auction already exists, Ikari-san wanted to create something that did not have a “complicated, user-unfriendly interface.” There were also many problems of Yahoo! Auction regarding anonymous users.

Ever since its launch, Whytelist has seen high user adoption hitting thousands. They have also held their own physical flea markets and will soon be launching a mobile application at the end of this year.

Although the e-commerce market in Japan makes up only 3% of the retail market, what makes Whytelist special and possibly appealing to people outside Japan is the site design is reflective of an actual physical store, which does not stray away from the typical shopping experience in real life. Also, Whytelist heavily features many of the Japanese fashion trends and can attract people who are interested in Japanese fashion.

But with more than 10,000 buzzing entrepreneurial “blogshops” in Singapore selling goods like clothes, electronics and food items online, it would be interesting to see how Whytelist can leverage off the massive e-commerce activity in Singapore and expand globally.
