Hugo Barra talks about Xiaomi’s progress in Indonesia and India

Hugo Barra from Xiaomi joins us on stage this afternoon at Startup Asia Jakarta 2014 to talk about Xiaomi and its progress in Indonesia.

He says Xiaomi was “clearly world-standard” when he was considering making the move away from Google’s Android team last year, and he’d been following its progress even before that because of early links between Google and Xiaomi’s founders.

“We want to be part of everything that Google does – we want to be early adopters,” says Barra to interviewer Jeremy Wagstaff from Thompson Reuters.

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun invests in huge housing project for young startups

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun is investing an RMB 100 million (US$16.3 million) series A round of funding into You+ International Youth Apartments. According to Techweb, the investment was completed in August.

You+, an apartment project aimed at entrepreneurs, was co-founded by Su Di, the founder of Beijing’s iconic Garage Cafe, a popular coworking space in the Zhongguancun tech and startup district of the city. Seeing that Chinese startups often cluster together in small areas, he wanted to create the housing project as a utopia for entrepreneurs.

The two eight-story complexes being renovated in Guangzhou are aimed at single people below the age of 45. Each contains 100 housing units. They will be set up to encourage a close-knit community atmosphere and strong communication among the residents.

Essentially, they are dormitories set up as startup living spaces. 20-square meter four-person bedrooms each have a bathroom but no kitchen, according to Netease Tech. Residents can cook in the cafeteria or communal kitchens. Each building has a gym, billiards room, bar, game room, and open areas for meetups.

Su Di disclosed You+ plans to renovate 10 buildings north of Guangzhou by the end of the year and open them to tenants by February. Three of them will specifically be for entrepreneurs.

Xiaomi postpones new country launches until 2015

Xiaomi is already active in six countries outside its home in China. But the gradual roll-out of new launches is now postponed, the company has confirmed.

The move was revealed by Hugo Barra, Xiaomi’s VP of international operations, talking yesterday at an event in New Delhi, India, according to Bloomberg. (Update: The original article did not make it clear that that production capacity is a notion suggested by us, not a reasoning given by Xiaomi. The article and title is amended to reflect this.)

In a statement provided to Tech in Asia, Barra explains:

Our focus is to add market by market, one at a time, and to focus on bringing all of our products to each of those markets before we add a new one. Earlier this year, we talked about wanting to be in 10 markets within 2014. We realized that it’s a smarter thing to do to scale back a bit and put a ton of effort in India and Indonesia before expanding further. By the end of this year, we will be in seven markets beyond mainland China. Our next market is Brazil some time in the first half of next year.

That leaves proposed launches in Thailand, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, and Turkey postponed to various points in 2015. Presumably, mooted entries into western markets will be pushed back even further. Xiaomi said in the past that it might be ready for North America in 2015.

In further comments picked up by Bloomberg, Barra explains that the upstart brand “went from shipping 50,000 a week into India to 200,000.” He added, “We’re shipping absurd quantities into India.” It’s not clear why exactly this postponement is happening – it might be due to limited production capacity, but the company denies this suggestion.

Xiaomi’s launch in India in July was met with an online backlash as the company’s flash sales of a limited number of phones frustrated potential buyers.

Building phones outside China

Barra added during his interview that Xiaomi and Foxconn, its OEM partner, are discussing making phones in India and Brazil in order to increase capacity. India-based manufacturing will begin in one to two years, while Brazil may start sooner.

Its full line-up of products is available only in mainland China. Xiaomi’s flagship phone, the Mi4, came out in July but is still not available in any markets besides its homeland.
