どう使い分けるかは日本の文字の歴史で説明します。

５～６世紀頃、漢字が日本に入ってきて
日本語の音に合わせて漢字を使ようになりました。
でも漢字は画数が多いため、長い文章を書くのが大変です。
それで漢字を少しくずした文字を作っていきました。
そうやってできたのがひらがなとカタカナです。

このような感じで変わっていったみたいです。

１０世紀初めの有名な書物には、このような感じでひらがなと漢字が使われています。
今と同じひらがながあるよね～

To explain how each of them is used, we need to look at Japanese history.

In around the 5th or 6th century, Kanji were introduced to Japan.
It was combined with the sounds of Japanese and entered common use.
However, the number of strokes used in Kanji is high, so writing long sentences was hard work.
Therefore, a smaller, simpler character set was created.
The products of that are Hiragana and Katakana.

It seems they changed in this way.

In this famous first book from the 10th century, in this way Hiragana and Kanji were used.

日本人が主に使う文字は、漢字・ひらがな・カタカナの３種類です。
それに数字・ローマ字・記号も使います。
新聞や本では、これらの文字がほとんどです。

ひらがなとカタカナは４６種類あります。
これがひらがなです。


漢字の正確な数はわからないんですが
日本最大の辞書には約５万文字が載っています。
その内よく使うのは２千文字ほどです。
小学校から中学校の義務教育で習う漢字の数も同じ２千文字ほどです。

例えば、忍者を漢字するとこれです。
ひらがなはこれです。

Hiragana and Katakana each consist of 46 characters.
This is Hiragana.
This is Katakana.

The exact number of Kanji is unknown,
but in the largest Japanese dictionaries, there are about 50,000 Kanji listed.
Of those, about 2,000 are in frequent use.
In the compulsory education system, during elementary and middle school, students learn those 2,000 Kanji.

For example, writing Ninja in Kanji looks like this.
