Philippines’ first horror game hits Steam Greenlight

Shortly before Christmas, Philippines-based game development studio Zeenoh Games put its upcoming horror game, Nightfall, up on Steam Greenlight. There was an animated trailer and a single screenshot, and no more.

While the game’s Steam Greenlight page is now heavily populated with concept art, event photos, and an additional gameplay trailer, we still don’t know much about Nightfall apart from the fact that it features a female journalist as its main character and that it’ll be a first-person game.

クリスマスの少し前、フィリピンに拠点を置くゲーム開発スタジオZeenoh Gamesが同社の近く公開されるホラーゲームNightfallをSteam Greenlightに載せた。予告動画と一枚のスクリーンショットがある、それだけだった。

ゲームのSteam Greenlightページは現在、コンセプトアート、イベント写真、そして追加のプレイ中予告動画と共に非常に人気を博している一方で、Nightfallについては、女性ジャーナリストがメインキャラクターで一人称視点ゲームになるという事実以外、未だ分かっていない。

When contacted by Games in Asia, Zeenoh founder and CEO Jhondie Abenaza says that Nightfall will be a first-person survival horror game based in Philippine folklore. He also adds that the initial poor showing of the Greenlight campaign was both his over-excitement about the studio’s first ever Steam Greenlight campaign as well as the team’s inexperience, since it has been a mobile-only studio until now.

There are some obvious parallels between Nightfall and Indonesia’s much hyped DreadOut from Digital Happiness. Abenaza says that the games may seem similar since the Philippines and Indonesia have mythological creatures in common, but that the Nightfall experience will be “entirely different.”

“[It’s] because of the mystery of the haunted house, kind [of] like ‘Resident Evil mansion’ but of course dealing with Philippine folklore like the well-known ‘Aswang’ in Hollywood,” he explains. Abenaza adds that there will also be a “tragic love story” that will allow players to discover connections to mythological creatures, as well as some links to historical Filipino events.

While Nightfall looks extremely rough at present, it is in pre-alpha stage. Abenaza says to expect a more polished trailer come next month, and that Zeenoh will be improving on the current game screenshots as well. He adds that the game’s visuals will, in future, be presented as 3D assets.

There may also be an Indiegogo campaign for Nightfall come February, where Zeenoh Games will ask for support – both financially and in terms of user-awareness. It hopes to use the crowdfunded backing to enlarge the team working on Nightfall as well as to fuel future marketing efforts.

Right now, Abenaza says that Zeenoh is targeting a September 2015 release for PC, and that a mobile version will follow if the studio is “good to go” with its research and development.

Xiaomi sells 1 million smartphones in India in first 5 months

Chinese phone maker Xiaomi revealed today that it has sold one million smartphones in India in the five months since launching in the nation.

Xiaomi’s India boss, Manu Jain, disclosed the figure earlier today on Twitter.

The milestone means that Xiaomi has matched the progress of Motorola, which also sold one million smartphones in India in the space of its first five months. Motorola’s online-only sales strategy in India, targeting young and ecommerce-savvy customers, paved the way for Xiaomi to do the same thing later in the year.

But it’s not all been plain sailing for the Chinese startup in its second-largest market. Earlier this month, a patent dispute with Ericsson led a Delhi High Court judge to issue a ban on Xiaomi sales in India. That was partially lifted a week later, but Xiaomi still hasn’t fully resolved its legal tussle in India.

The site’s biggest competitor is OLX (formerly known as TokoBagus). It is the largest ecommerce community and Indonesia’s third largest local website.

In February, founder Aji Ramadhan claimed the site had nine million pageviews per month from about 560,000 unique visitors. Ramadhan added that 1CAK is a profitable company, currently supporting itself on Google AdSense alone.

Nonton is a site that allows Indonesians to watch and upload video content, not unlike YouTube. The site has been live since October 2013 and now, one year later, it has around 45,000 videos available to stream. Since it began promoting itself in January, Nonton has gathered a daily average of over 70,000 visitors and more than 300,000 pageviews. The site has more than 40,000 registered users who watch over 50,000 videos per day. Nonton aims to make money through in-stream video advertising and banner ads on the website.

Indonesia’s top 10 bootstrapping startups of 2014

2014 was a pivotal year for Indonesia’s tech scene. Tech in Asia readers were innundated with news about SoftBank and Sequoia Capital’s record-breaking investment in Tokopedia, along with on-going scoops about Jakarta’s hackers protecting the presidential election with the public online vote counter Kawal Pemilu.

But what about the bootstrapping startups that have been slogging away day-in and day-out this year? Surely they deserve some credit for not just surviving, but thriving in 2014. So, in no particular order, here are 10 bootstrapping startups in Indonesia that have gained notable traction or just have awesome ideas.

Similar to BuzzFeed, Hipwee’s content covers entertainment, relationships, travel, and inspirational topics, most often accompanied by pictures and GIFs. The site’s founder Lauri Lahi claims Hipwee is clocking more than 3.3 million pageviews and over one million unique visits per month. The site launched in April but the company is not monetizing yet that we know of.

Mahoni is a Surabaya-based mobile app development firm that’s responsible for Southeast Asia’s most expensive digital law text library Themis Reader. The company has been around for several years, but to date has yet to announce a single hint of venture capital funding. The company is well-known for its variety of ereader apps and products, and Mahoni founder Ginting Sadtyono says the firm’s Buku Sekolah Elektronik (Electronic School Book) app serves more than 50 million users in Indonesia.

RumahDijual is a website for property agents and homeowners to sell property, houses, land, and apartments in Indonesia’s major cities. Back in April, SimilarWeb estimated that the site was receiving close to one million visits per day, which was significantly more than its competitors Rumah123 and Rumah.com. The following month, RumahDijual recorded over 1.9 million visits, 900,000 unique visitors, and 11.5 million pageviews. The company earns money from ads, and founder Yohanes Aristianto credits the site’s traffic to an SEO friendly domain name (RumahDijual means “Home for Sale”).

Oomph
Oomph is an Indonesian mobile content distributor much like Google Play or Apple’s App Store. The key difference is that Oomph is localized and tailored just for the Indonesian market. The company is three years old already, and while it has kept a low profile until now, Oomph founder Stanley Tan says his product already has more than 4.5 million registered users in Indonesia. According to him, Oomph is getting more than 10,000 new users per day and should reach 10 million users by the end of next year. Oomph monetizes on a pay-per-download basis, but may also soon bring advertising into its store.
