Korean AR Company, Mobile Bus to Release 3 Kingdoms Game

A few months ago, there were a few augmented reality conferences in Beijing. So while in Seoul, Korea recently I paid a visit to one of the companies I met here – MobileBus.

Established in 2006, MobileBus started with two people as a 3D gaming studio but now has over sixty people across Korea and China with a focus on building marker based augmented reality (AR) mobile games; the first being ‘3 Kingdoms’.

2-3か月前、北京でＡＲに関するカンファレンスが2-3件あった。そして韓国ソウルでは、ここで会った企業のうちの1社を最近訪問した－モバイル・バスだ。
2006年に設立されたモバイル・バスは当初、社員2名の３Ｄゲームスタジオだったが、今や韓国と中国に60名以上の社員を抱え、建物にマーカーを付ける形の仮想現実（ＡＲ）を使った携帯ゲームに注力している－その最初のゲームが「３Kingdoms」（訳：３つの王国）だ。

So how does it work? Think about it like this – you activate the app with a camera and focus it on a piece of paper that almost looks like a bar code or a pattern of squares. Almost magically little 3D characters appear on the screen, as if they are standing on top of the table.

MobileBus was started by John Lee. Lee originally worked at a leading Finnish publisher and developer of advanced 3D mobile game technologies called Fathammer. Although he later left Fathammer he is cooperating with them to use their technology. MobileBus is also the key distributor for Artoolworks in Korea, a leading commercial developer and licensor of tools and applications for AR.

そもそもどんな仕組みなのか。たとえばこんな具合だ－あなたはカメラでこのアプリケーションを有効化させ、バーコードか二次元コードのようなものが書いてある紙に焦点を合わせる。するとほとんど魔法のように小さな３Ｄのキャラクターが画面に現れ、それはまるでテーブルの上に立っているかのようだ。
モバイル・バスはジョン・リーが創業した。リーは元々、フィンランドでトップクラスの出版社であり先進的な3Dモバイルゲーム技術の開発会社であるFathammerという会社で働いていた。Fathammer は退職したが、彼らの技術を活用するなど今も協力関係は続いている。モバイル・バスは、また、Artoolworks の韓国における主要ディストリビュータであり、トップクラスの商業ベースの開発会社及びライセンサーとしてARアプリやツールのライセンサーを提供している。

Like any normal application, a user can download the game onto their mobile phone. In Korea, a user can download it from the SK Telecom app store and then the marker will be sent to them by email which they can print off. In China, MobileBus is pre-loading their games in all Samsung phones sold.

John believes that one of the main challenges for AR to be accepted into the mainstream is cross-platform consistency, especially with Android with so many different specs like camera quality; “this needs to be solved for AR to take off.”

普通のアプリケーション同様、ユーザーはゲームを携帯電話にダウンロードできる。韓国ではSK Telecom アップ・ストアからダウンロードでき、マーカーは電子メールで送り返され、また印刷することもできる。中国では、モバイル・バスが、販売中のサムスンの全端末でそのゲームをプリインストールしている。
ARがゲーム業界の主流に受け入れられるようになるための大きなハードルの一つは、プラットフォーム間、特に、カメラのように非常に多くの機種があるアンドロイド間の整合性であるとジョンは確信している。ジョンいわく「ARが軌道に乗るにはこれを解決しなければならない」と。

With Korea widely known for its strong manufacturing technology companies such as Samsung; Android is starting to dominate the market with 6.5 million phones versus 3 million i-Phones. This means a standard has to be developed for AR to flourish in the growing Android market. Another main challenge is people’s awareness of AR. John also thinks that carriers and device makers must support with marketing and technical efforts to drive user uptake of mobile AR.

3 Kingdoms will be officially released in a month and the company also has plans to rollout another 2 games in the next year. The target users are aged 10-25 years old.

韓国はサムスン等、強力な製造業で広く知られており、アンドロイドは300万台のiPhoneに対抗して650万台の携帯電話市場を席巻し始めている。これはつまり、成長するアンドロイド市場においてARが広く使われるには標準を作り上げる必要があるということだ。もう一つの大きなハードルは、ARに対する人々の認知だ。ジョンは、ユーザーが携帯ARを取り入れるように仕向けるには、携帯キャリアや端末メーカーがマーケティングや技術面での支援を行う必要があるとも考えている。
3 Kingdoms は一か月後に正式にリリースされる予定で、モバイル・バスは、来年さらに2つのゲームをリリースする計画だ。ターゲットユーザーは、10-25才。

SearchEnabler is currently in private beta testing but has already gotten more than 50 beta requests from over 15 different countries. Co-founder Khadim Batti told us that his start-up has not spent a single penny on marketing. With the domain name SeachEnabler.com just a couple months old, the site has already gotten a PageRank of 3. For such a young site I think it’s worth mentioning. Batti shared more with Penn Olson about the beta roll out:

Lolapps Merges With 6waves, Seeks Out Funding

Ravenwood Fair developer Lolapps and Ravenwood Fair publisher 6waves announced a merger today that gives the combined company over 39.2 million monthly active and 4.4 million daily users, according to our traffic tracking service, AppData.

The company will now be called 6waves Lolapps with Lolapps CEO Arjun Sethi (pictured below) reporting to 6waves CEO Rex Ng (pictured above). Both Sethi and Ng now sit on a six-member executive team comprised of half 6waves members, half Lolapps members. For the most part, development and publishing operations will function independently at each studio, while a deeper integration is planned for international release strategy and licensing agreements for Lolapps’ recently-acquired Fliso game engine.

“We still want to keep things pretty independent,” Ng tells ISG. “Lolapps has a pretty full [release schedule] for the year, so we don’t want to [disrupt] that. We’re still deciding whether or not to physically join offices.”

“We’re still working out what’s going to happen with Fliso [licensing],” Sethi adds. He says that by joining forces, 6waves Lolapps now has a clear advantage over competitors in the rapidly expanding social games publishing space.

The Fliso engine is a Flash graphics engine that allows developers to create 3D environments on an isometric field, which is the standard view for most Facebook games. In the engine acquisition, Lolapps also picked up the engine’s creator, Sean Cooper, and has begun to develop a newer version of Fliso to license to developers in the future.

フリソ社のエンジンはフラッシュの画像処理エンジンで、これを使うと開発者は大抵のフェースブックのゲームで標準的である等角図の上で3D環境を作り上げることができる。エンジンの獲得の際、ロラップスはこのエンジンのクリエーターであるショーン・クーパーも獲得している。そして、将来、他の開発者にライセンスできるような新バージョンのフリソの開発を既に始めている。

Aside from the technical edge 6waves Lolapps gains from the Fliso engine, the merger also expands overall international reach. As one entity, the company now holds offices in the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom with localization support for 15 languages. Coincidentally, Ravenwood Fair is currently only localized in nine languages; though Sethi says Facebook is working with Lolapps on Portuguese, Russian, Arabic and Korean language versions.

6ウェーブズ・ロラップスがフリソ・エンジンから得る技術的な優位性をさておき、今回の合併は海外展開全体を拡大させた。1つの組織として、この会社は今や米国、日本、香港、英国にオフィスを持ち、15言語のバージョンがある。同じ時点で、レイベンウッド・フェアは、現在9言語でしか提供されていない。ただし、セティによると、フェースブックは、ロラップスと協力して、ポルトガル語、ロシア語、アラビア語、韓国語バージョンに着手しているとか。

The terms of the merger were not disclosed, but Sethi and Ng confirmed that 6waves Lolapps is now in the process of raising funding. 6waves’ last round brought in $17.5 million in January 2010, while Lolapps’ last known funding was a $4.5 million Series A round raised back in September 2008.

As for releases, 6waves recently published several new titles that have been appearing on our weekly top 20s lists, such as Camelot: The Game. Lolapps, meanwhile, is set to deliver Ravenshire Castle and possibly a second title dubbed Ravensky before the end of 2011.

A good concept for a cafe, is also that the customers could buy the furniture,chairs/tables and decorative items within the cafe, thats an idea that i've had in mind for a cafe in ○○.
