James Turrel
House of Light

In 2003 I visited "Earth Art Festival" in an areal called Echigo-tsumari in Niigata, I was so overwhelmed to see the house of light.

Photo & Text by tamachangg

In the same period, I had read Junichiro Tanizaki's "In Prase of Shadows" and I felt disgust about fluorescent lights, and was very sensitive to the fate of light and shadow related to Japanese modern cultures. Maybe that was because the impact was extremely huge.

James Turrell's "House of Light"

When I visited 'The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial' in 2003, which was held in each three years, I felt that he had created something great. That was a house of light.

Photo&Text by tamachangg

At that time, I had a strong sense of dislike to a fluorescent light after reading "In Praise of Shadows" by Junichiro TANIZAKI. I was also too sensitive to a rise and fall of light and darkness concerning the Japanese modern culture. They might be the reasons for which I rememberd his work even more clearly.

This piece uses entire house which lightings are coordinated by James Turrell. The most impressive point is to look up to the square-shaped sky which shows from the retractable roof in the living floor. Please be sure to check in before sunset. After sunset until the sky is completely dark, for approximately 30 minutes, in the time the color of sky quickly changes, orange LED lit from inside the window gradually turns bright according to the color of the sky. Clipped sky in contrast with ceiling light is designed to be most beautiful.

Although this work has been able to coordinate the lighting in the entire house by James Turrell, from the retractable roof of the living room without the square, the best point is looking up in the sky. Check-in is definitely before sunset. From sunset, around at least 30 minutes until dark, at the time when the color of the sky is changing suddenly the orange LED which is being lit up inside the window corresponds to the color of the sky and is gradually changing brightly. It is designed so that the contrast between the color of the clipped sky and ceiling will become the most beautiful.

More than anything, you are not allowed to see this lighting program unless you stay at the house of light.

I think starting to use fluorescent light in Japanese style house was a begininng of big big mistake. During the high economic growth period, like a catch-phrase "Bright National", all lighitings, from houses to towns, were switched to fluorescent lights. As a result, places that originally did not have to be lighted became lighted. Eventually, even stains became clearly visible, making people accustomed to immediately exchange the light,

And above all, It can't be imagined not to stay at a house of light this light program.

And in the first place, when Japanese houses started using fluorescent light, I didn't think that it may have been the beginning of a big, big mistake. As in the slogan "Bright National" during the high economic growth period, the lights were replaced with fluorescent lights from the house to the lights that light the town, to the point were the places that originally doesn't necessarily need to be lit are illuminated. As a result, even the one which got soiled can be seen clearly, the culture which will be changed immediately was born.

excessibly enhanced consumption cycle. Additionally using the white light glittering in offices made people always active. Overall it influenced hugely in the economic development of Japan, but at the end did it make people happy

Every time I hear the discussion about whether something has good or bad sense, sense literally means an ability to sense something, so bad sense purely means the ability to sense is dull. What does it mean when a someone wants to improve his sense, when his ability to sense something is dull in the first place?

Having a good sense doesn't always benefit. Sensing too much can be so tiring. Therefore it is an inevitable fact that modern society needs to shut out such sensations to continue life.

Light of house is a place which severely criticizes modern society and at the same time to slightly open the closed up sensation.
