9. Mito

Mito’s plant in Tangerang whirred into life in August 2014. The factory is set to assemble 100,000 smartphones and tablets each month. Mito currently assembles phones both in Indonesia and China.

Just like Advan, Mito hopes to produce its own smartphone components in the years ahead.

10. Himax

Himax is an exciting new player in the gadget industry in Indonesia as it seeks to disrupt other brands – in a manner similar to Xiaomi – with strongly-specced yet affordable phones. The company is reportedly in the midst of building a factory. In 2016, the six-hectare factory, located in Tangerang, will have a production target of 100,000 smartphones each month.

9. Mito

10. Himax

11. SPC

Although SPC may be the least well-known local brand in this list, the company claims that it’s already assembling about 200,000 feature phones each month in its factory in Tangerang. Injecting an additional US$1 million to its plant, SPC plans to start assembling smartphones and tablets in 2015. It is unknown how many phones the company aims to assemble every month.

Besides the 12 companies above, there are other smartphone makers that have expressed some level of interest in setting up a factory in Indonesia, such as Huawei, Asus, Lenovo, Xiaomi, and LG, at least according to Indonesia’s industry ministry representative. But those companies have not yet confirmed any plans.

11. SPC

What does this mean for startups?

Expect a big boom in China over the next 20 years. China’s wealth is going to venture capital. A startup, with its intellectual demands, high risk and high reward, is a luxury of the highly educated upper-middle class, which is exactly what we see emerging in China.

I think a Chinese Silicon Valley is on the horizon. From the perspective of a non-Chinese entrepreneur, this is great. Chinese innovation will create value which the rest of us will be able to use. Chinese venture capital is already being invested in non-Chinese startups. And China’s increasing wealth will make it a more attractive market for outside startups’ products.

Zero Legend (Indonesia, working title)

Now Alkemis Games is a very recent entrant in the industry, but it undoubtedly has some of the best art I’ve seen come out of an Indonesian indie game studio. It recently received an undisclosed round of seed funding from East Ventures to work on the project code-named Zero Legend, a free-to-play mobile fantasy RPG. (Disclosure: East Ventures also invests in Tech in Asia. See our ethics page).

Zero Legend will revolve around collecting and growing over 100 characters and taking them dungeon diving. There will a focus on in-game communities and events as well, allowing players to take part in quests and tournaments with friends. It’s set for release as early as spring 2015.

Zero Legend (仮タイトル、インドネシア)

Zero Legend

Drift Rebels Japan (Thailand)

Remember Initial D? Now how about experiencing that just like Takumi did? Drift Rebels Japan from Hydraulic Games will be a racing game focusing on illegal drift racing in the Japanese mountains, with novel visual elements taking players from race to race. Right now, it’s being planned for just iOS and Android with both paid and free versions, and is still in very early development stage.

But if it’s successful at launch, Drift Rebels Japan may get ported to the PC platform and include more Eurobeat music. Hydraulic Games is being transparent with the development process and fans of the genre will be able to submit ideas for characters, stories, and even music.

The Wanda-Tencent-Baidu ecommerce venture (which Wanda refers to as Wand E-commerce in its release) was publicly announced back in August. Wanda maintained a 70 percent stake in the US$814 million venture, with Tencent and Baidu splitting the remainder evenly. While the companies gave few specific details regarding the venture’s execution, their public statements repeatedly mentioned the importance of online-to-offline commerce. When one factor’s in Baidus commitment to maps and beacon technology, WeChat’s commitment to payments and social, and Wanda’s entertainment properties, it’s easy to speculate – but hard to know specifically – how the venture might play out.

Despite how little is known about the joint venture, Wanda looks set to own a bevy of virtual real estate in addition to its physical real estate. “O2O places a greater importance on the link between people and services than traditional commercial methods, with the size of the market considerably greater than just physical transactions,” its statement reads. “Wanda possesses the world’s largest offline consumer network, with 1.5 million customers in 2014 and an estimated 6 billion customers by 2020. If Wanda E-commerce can combine its offline and online resources effectively, it has the potential to become a new Internet giant with incredible potential.” In other words, Wanda is thinking big.

The app, called Baidu Tianyan (tianyan could be translated as “eye in the sky”), will be familiar to anyone who uses FlightAware, the app that was in the news earlier this year as people sought to understand what on earth happened to the still missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. As with FlightAware, Baidu’s new app is accompanied by a browser-based flight tracker – see here – that does away with some of the slickness of the mobile app.

While the augmented reality aspect of the Baidu Tianyan mobile app is fun (pictured top), it’s actually the least useful part. It’s probably more useful and insightful when used to track flights on a map.:

Xiaomi has a history of its devices selling out within minutes of going on sale. Yesterday in India was no exception. This was the second time it went for an online flash sale in the country, and the Mi 3 went out of stock in five seconds, according to Mi India’s Facebook page.

A week ago, when Mi 3 first went on sale in India, the story was similar. It went out of stock in under 40 minutes, leaving a lot of eager Indian customers dejected. A furious few took to online fora complaining about Xiaomi’s tactic of getting tens of thousands of people to register and leaving a large majority of them high and dry.
