Moving to Shenzhen as part of HAXLR8R

The Vigo team moved to Shenzhen, China as part of the hardware accelerator HAXLR8R. HAXLR8R offers seed funding ($25,000), office space as well as mentorship along with the other opportunities for startups to take an idea to a product. The programme is based in Shenzhen in order to leverage the supply chain and factory ecosystem. They use a process they call ‘Interactive Manufacturing Process’ to ensure rapid development of manufacturable products.

Mobile event tech firm Zeguestlist brings NFC to fitness conventions

Singapore- and Norway-based mobile event tech company Zeguestlist’s solutions were used at a fitness convention in Norway last month. How did it go?

At Norwegian School of Sport Science‘s annual fitness convention, held in Oslo, Norway, Zeguestlist, a Singapore- and Norway-based mobile event tech company, was tasked to manage over 1,000 participants and 132 sessions with its cloud-based solutions.

Held from November 15 to November 17, 2013, the event involved online payments, QR ticket deliveries, NFC session check-ins and live attendance and post-event statistics.

With the help of ZTE Numbia Z5, an NFC-enabled handset, Zeguestlist ran the show, managing everything from initial registration, shoes distribution, parallel session check-ins, to lunch distribution with its mobile application.

To attend the convention, guests first had to purchase a ticket, specify their shoe size and do an initial registration of the sessions they wanted to attend in the next two days through a registration page with a session calendar overview up to six months before the convention.

All the NFC check-ins with Zeguestlist app created live statistics throughout the event. The guest web app had over 6,000 logins from guests changing classes and the organisers could track registration and session popularity in real time.

The idea of Zeguestlist was born in 2010 when tablets were making their way into the tech scene. The cloud-based management service was formed to utilise the new tablet technology to make the event industry smarter. Zeguestlist also recently managed an NFC-enabled wedding in Singapore.

Yet more proof m-commerce is hot: Line’s Maybelline flash sale sold out in 5 minutes

Last week, we reported the partnership between Japanese messenger Line and Maybelline New York (Thailand) to bring the cosmetic brand’s newest product, then a mystery, to Thailand via a mobile flash sale. The campaign was slated to last from Monday, December 16, to Friday, December 20. Although, it didn’t happen on Monday due to undisclosed difficulties, the flash sale finally kicked off yesterday at noon. Five minutes later, the 500 Maybelline Lip Polish lipsticks had sold out.

The batch of 500 pale in comparison to the tens and hundreds of thousands we’ve seen in other flash sales, but the event is still significant because it marks the second such event in Thailand.

Tom Srivorakul, CEO of aCommerce (the Thai logistics provider that helped coordinate the sale) commented:

The success of this flash sale proves that Thailand and the region are ready to embrace mobile commerce in a big way. Mobile internet usage in TH has doubled this year and many e-commerce businesses in Thailand are reporting above 30% of their traffic and near 20% of transactions coming via mobile devices.

Line’s first flash sale in Thailand occurred last week, upon which a batch of company-branded iPhone cases was also sold out in less than 25 minutes (the company hasn’t revealed the number of cases that were up for grabs).

Last November Xiaomi sold 150,000 smartphones in less than 10 minutes on Chinese messaging app WeChat.

The emergence of these m-commerce flash sales is but one example of how messaging apps are becoming useful platforms for businesses to reach consumers.

I notice that GEAK’s smart wi-fi router looks a lot like the Securifi Almond, which hit the headlines at the start of this year after a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign to raise money to build it. This is the Almond:

Craving for dishes like Bak Chor Mee or Rojak? I know I am. Singapore dining app Picky recently launched an interactive online food guide, Famous Eats, which features what it claims to be the best of local hawker delights.

With 24 local dishes and 200 hawker stalls featured in the first edition of Famous Eats, the Picky team notes that more categories and stalls will be added in the future.

Baidu Leads A $15 Million Financing Round in Fashion Site Yoka

Fashion website Yoka secured $15 million of funding led by Baidu and followed by Fidelity Growth Partners, and existing investors of Hearst Corporation, Matrix Partners China, and IDG. Tang Hesong, vice president of Baidu, has become a board member for Yoka (report in Chinese).

Co-founded in 2006, Yoka is China’s first vertical website targeted at premium brands and fashion industry. The affiliated websites are Yokamen, Yoka Mobile and Yoka Mall.
