Xiaomi-backed P2P loans startup Jimubox secures $84M series C funding

Peer-to-peer lending startup Jimubox has just secured $84 million in series C funding. It comes seven months after the Beijing-based firm attracted US$37 million from Xiaomi and ShunWei Capital, a venture capital fund headed by the phone maker’s founder, Lei Jun.

This time round the lead investor is UK’s Investec Bank. Haitong Kaiyuan Investment also joined in, along with new investors Mandra Capital and Zhong Capital Fund. Existing Jimubox backers Matrix China Partners, Xiaomi, Shunwei, Ventech China, and Magic Stone Alternative also threw in some cash.

Barry Freeman, Jimubox CFO and co-founder, tells Tech in Asia that the earlier tie-up with Xiaomi helped the startup see a big boost in traffic. Before the gadget maker got involved with the startup, 50 percent of the site’s traffic was from mobile – but now that’s up to 70 percent.

The service, which offers business loans for small and medium-sized businesses and consumer loans for individuals, now has 23,000 separate loan borrowers as well as, Freeman says, a “much larger” (but undisclosed) base of investors who get returns on the primary loan issuance as well as any secondary trading of interest in the loans that may take place.

Freeman adds that Jimubox has seen about RMB 6 billion to RMB 7 billion (US$971 million to $113 million) in new issue loans since launching in August 2013, and about 25 percent of that tally ended up going into secondary trading. Freeman says that all the secondary trading shows the health of the platform as it gives investors a chance to stay more liquid and make shorter term returns.

China’s microfinance sector has exploded on the web in the past couple of years, and that has been matched by investor interest in many of the startups involved, such as Dianrong and Renrendai.

Financial comparison startup CompareAsiaGroup raises $40M series A led by Goldman Sachs

Hong Kong-based financial comparison site CompareAsiaGroup today announced it has raised US$40 million in series A funding led by Goldman Sachs Investment Partners, Jardine Pacific, Nova Founders Capital, ACE & Company, and Route 66 Ventures. Zynga founder Mark Pincus, former Facebook and MySpace COO Owen Van Natta, and others also participated in the round.

Under the CompareAsiaGroup umbrella are several brands each localized for their respective markets: MoneyHero in Hong Kong and Vietnam, CompareHero in Malaysia, Money101 in Taiwan, MoneyGuru in Thailand, SingSaver in Singapore, MoneyMax in the Philippines, and HaloMoney in Indonesia. The site aggregates more than 1,500 financial products including credit cards, loans, health insurance, and car insurance.

The latest funding round will go toward expanding those offerings to more categories, including investment products and life insurance, and into marketing. "We want to make sure in the next 12 months that every housewife will know our brand," says Gerald Eder, founder and managing director.

CompareAsiaGroup was founded one-and-a-half years ago and has so far expanded to nine markets. The service is free to consumers, while the more than 60 banks and insurance companies that list their products pay a commission in return for expanding their marketing reach.

While many people still rely on word of mouth, advertising, and otherwise stick to what they know when it comes to choosing financial products, that trend is slowly changing. Eder compares the market shift to travel, where in the past people trusted in travel agents to find them the cheapest flights and accommodation. But the internet has radically changed how the travel industry works, and most people elect to find the best deals online for themselves.

"It’s the same situation when it comes to financial products," Eder says. "We show all product providers, not just the products we have a trading relationship with."

Most of us aren’t switching insurance companies and applying for loans on a daily or weekly basis, so CompareAsiaGroup doesn’t exactly have daily or monthly active users. Eder says people consider new financial products several times per year, though, typically when their current contracts, such as car insurance, expire. When they do come, they’ve usually got cash in hand.

Compared to the rest of the world, Eder says success in Asia requires a strong mobile experience and human interaction. CompareAsiaGroup operates call centers in every market it operates in. Otherwise, Asians are pretty much the same as everyone else. "The desire for the consumer to save time and money is the same around the world," he says.

While CompareAsiaGroup claims to be the leading financial site in Asia, it’s a highly competitive market. There are at least seven rival sites in Indonesia alone, for example. But Eder says being a regional company as opposed to a country-specific one allows CompareAsiaGroup "to reap tremendous benefits in economies of scale."

CompareAsiaGroup has strong backers, too. The latest injection from Goldman Sachs will "increase our credibility and trust with the banks and insurance companies that we partner up with," Eder says. Goldman Sachs will join the startup’s board of directors.

The company was also co-founded by Nova Founders, which shares many traits with regional power player Rocket Internet. Nova’s focus on existing models that are proven and implementing them in markets with huge upside and low competition is similar to Rocket’s, according to Eder. But as a former Rocket staff, he says the legal structure and culture is very different.

MicroStrategy Usher

We’ve seen devices that use a near field communications chip to handle authentication in the workplace, and while the Apple Watch does have an NFC chip, it’s locked down. But MicroStrategy has figured a way to use the Watch for workplace authentication without using the NFC chip.

Usher turns the Apple Watch into a secure digital key, enabling wearers to log into enterprise business systems, unlock devices, validate personal identity, and open physical entryways with a simple gesture or tap. After Apple opens up the NFC chip to developers, we expect to see more authentication apps like Usher.

Germany’s mobile game companies such as Hamburg’s Goodgame Studios and Berlin’s Wooga are doing well, but they aren’t the biggest kids on the block when it comes to the global mobile gaming market.

The hits will come, as the remaining German game companies are consolidating and doubling down on online and mobile game development. Hamburg’s Bigpoint has just five games under development, a lot fewer than it has had in the past, as it focuses on higher quality, said Khaled Helioui, chief executive of Bigpoint, in an interview with GamesBeat at its Berlin office.

“It’s been a hard couple of years for Germany,” Helioui said.

Reichart said that part of the problem is that the German market itself has been big enough for local developers to target it. The Quo Vadis conference went on for nine years before it switched from German to English-language talks.

“That’s a typical problem in Germany, where you have to force the Germans to think beyond the German market,” Reichart said. “We were pioneers in free-to-play, and we have to keep this position. If we lose this position, the few really successful companies we have in Germany will be bought or disappear.”

By comparison, Finland is so small as a domestic market that Supercell had to think about being global from day one. The thing that is changing is that Germany, particularly Berlin, is having great success attracting game developers from other regions. Wooga has 40 different nationalities among its 250-plus member staff.

Jens Begemann, the chief executive of Berlin’s mobile gaming company Wooga, told me that of the top 30 German corporations, none are based in Berlin. That means that the region doesn’t prosper because it has giant companies that employ tons of people. Rather, Berlin has to create jobs in other ways.

The mixture of local and foreign employees is good. The transplants should bring more creativity to Germany than it has historically had. Nicole Demeo, the chief marketing officer at Glispa and an American expat who visits Berlin a couple of times a month, said that German companies are solid, but they need help with marketing themselves. And slowly, that talent is relocating to Berlin.

“It’s a real expat community here,” she said. “It has taken some time, but Berlin’s startup community is really strong.”

The DeanBeat: Germany is still on the cusp of gaming greatness

BERLIN — Germany isn’t the biggest player when it comes to gaming, but it is brewing some game companies that, with luck, will one day be better known than the country’s beer.

I saw this as I visited Berlin’s Quo Vadis game developer event, which was just one of 11 different happenings related to gaming and tech during the week. As I toured around briefly, I felt like Germany had some growing pains that I’ve seen before at companies in the U.S. But it also has potential, because it is creating some of the right conditions for good things to happen.

The money is where the hits are, and King’s Candy Crush Saga fuels a strong game development community in London and Sweden. And Supercell’s hits — Clash of Clans, Hay Day, and Boom Beach — brought $1.7 billion in revenues to Finland. That single Helsinki game generates more revenue today than all of Germany’s game developers.

One of the problems is that Germany’s early focus on free-to-play browser-based online games — pioneered by companies such as Gameforge and Bigpoint — took a big hit in the transition to mobile gaming. Crytek, the biggest console game developer and maker of the CryEngine, also fell on hard times.
