China’s Top Food Ordering Ele.me Eats Up Landmark $630M USD Funding At $3B USD Valuation

China’s top online food takeout site Ele.me announced Friday that it has raised $630 million USD of fresh funding led by CITIC Capital and supermarket chain Hualian at a market cap of more than $3 billion USD, pushing the company’s total investment size to a whopping $1.1 billion USD.

The hefty round was followed by current investors Tencent, JD, Sequoia Capital and new backers of China Media Capital and Gopher Asset.

He indicates the firm is going raise further rounds since constructing an efficient delivery platform needs solid capital support.

China’s booming online food delivery sector has been crammed with multiple players from internet giants Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba, to medium-sized competitors Dianping, Meituan, and all the way to vertical startups Line0, Waimaichaoren, Daojia, Meican, Dianwoba. The growing market has attracted strings of capitalists who are eager to pour money in.

In China, rental installments are typically three to six months at a time. WeZebra found a niche market when they realized there are many students or young white collar workers that struggle to pay the fees upfront. Founded earlier this year, the company provides installment payment for low income individuals who are looking to rent homes. They received a 5 million RMB ($771,000 USD) angel investment this February.

The service monetizes through a 4% commission fee for three-months rental and a 6% commission fee for six-month rentals. After the advance payment of the first month’s rental with service fee, the tenant can pay monthly.

Monthly installment platforms are not a new concept for Chinese startups. Fenqile, one of the contributors to this investment, is a Chinese student micro-credit site that allows buyers to borrow small sums of money for consumer electronics, paying them off in monthly installments. The company recently announced a strategic investment from e-commerce giant JD.com this May to offer monthly installments to its customers.

WeZebra’s services now covers three Chinese cities, Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, and they are planning to expand to Guangzhou and Shenzhen later this year. According to the company, some members in the team hail from Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba. The company is founded by post-90s CEO Ping Dong.

China’s Cheetah Mobile enters India with a bang, launches ad platform

After Xiaomi, Alibaba, and Tencent, another giant from China just entered India. Cheetah Mobile today launched its mobile ad platform in India – the fastest growing smartphone market in the world.

Cheetah Mobile apps such as Clean Master, CM Security, Battery Doctor, and Photo Grid have nearly 500 million mobile monthly active users (as of June). Of these, 9 percent are in India.

Now the company is leveraging that user base along with big data analytics to roll out its mobile ad platform in one country after another, the latest being India where it has opened an office. Flipkart, Uber, and Amazon are among its 500-plus ad clients. It is partnering with Facebook, Google, and Tencent to boost its monetization capabilities.
