100,000 students and counting: Google brings VR kits to schools in 15 more cities

Google is expanding its Expeditions Pioneer Program, an initiative to help teachers and students use virtual reality in schools around the world. The program is adding new locations in the U.S. — Alexandria, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Detroit, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Washington D.C. — as well as coming to three new countries: Denmark, Singapore, and Canada.

Fifteen new cities are being added in total, though Google didn’t say how many schools exactly would be participating in the expansion or how many the program now totals. It did say that teachers can choose from more than 120 tours of places such as Antarctica, the Acropolis, or the Borneo Rainforest to show their students.

Along with partner Subaru, Google gives participating schools an Expeditions kit, which includes Asus smartphones, a tablet for the teacher, a router, and viewers that turn phones into virtual reality headsets. Some kits include Mattel’s new View-Master virtual reality viewers while others include Google Cardboard (a simple gadget made out of a few pieces of cardboard and a couple of lenses).

In May, Google first announced its Cardboard virtual-reality platform was coming to schools. The company then launched the Expeditions Pioneer Program in September, bringing VR kits into schools across California, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, and the U.K.

Google today also revealed that more than 100,000 students have participated in the Expeditions Pioneer Program. Not bad for a program that rolled out just two months ago, but also not too surprising considering all students in the same classroom can go on one trip. With the expansion today, it’s easy to see how Google will hit 1 million students sometime next year.

Google seems to be accelerating its virtual reality push as of late. Just last week, YouTube made every one of its videos compatible with Google Cardboard.

France’s RoboCARE bets robots can keep elderly healthy and teach the French to speak better English

TOULOUSE, France — Robots may not yet be able to experience emotion, but one French company believes that they can be used to improve connections between humans in areas such as health care and education.

RoboCARE Lab, a company based in Toulouse, France, has launched an ambitious campaign to place robots in nursing homes and schools across the country. The hope is that these robots will help the elderly remain in closer contact with family while stimulating their memories and raising their spirits for improved long-term health.

In French schools, which have struggled at times to effectively teach English, the robots would provide extra help for teachers and motivation for students. There are also plans to develop a French curriculum with robots to help autistic children learn social skills and empathy.

Naturally, in a country like France, which at times has a contentious relationship with innovation, the founders of the company are proceeding with some caution. But in the long run, they believe this new technology could have a positive impact on France, and eventually the world.

“This is something we think can be used to reach older people and younger people as well,” said Faissal Houhou, who cofounded RoboCARE with Dominique Blasco. “And we think France is ready for something like this.”

As the founders have been touring with their robots to discuss the company’s plans, they’ve certainly generated tremendous attention from the French media.

At the moment, RoboCARE uses two different robots. The first is called Milo, and is built by Texas-based RoboKind. Milo’s face becomes animated when he speaks, and he makes small gestures and motions as he communicates.

Milo is used to lead group games, including memory quizzes, and group exercises or singing activities to keep nursing home residents engaged.

Fred Margolin, chief executive of RoboKind, said his company has been working on Milo for several years now. In the process, they’ve taken a robot that originally cost $35,000 to build and shrunk the cost to under $6,000, making it more affordable for industries that need widespread deployment.

In the U.S., RoboKind has focused on developing the robots for use with autistic children through a program called Robots4Autism. He’s hoping RoboCARE will create a French version of that curriculum, which is massive in terms of the scope of its content and lessons.

RoboKind is also working on finding ways to get Milo into U.S. nursing homes, and Margolin said the company believes the robot can be effective in helping to delay the early effects of dementia. He’s optimistic RoboCARE in France will pave the way for a broader international market, and has been impressed with the company’s progress.

“I seems like RoboCARE has really taken the ball and run with it,” Margolin said.

Starting next year, Milo will also be used in a school in Picardy, France to assist with teaching English. It can be challenging to find teachers, particularly at the elementary school level, who are qualified and capable of effectively teaching English, Houhou said. He hopes educators will embrace Milo as a new teaching tool.

The other robot used by RoboCARE is a telepresence machine from Suitable Technologies. This is also being tested by two Toulouse-area nursing homes.

This robot is a computer monitor on a stand with wheels. Family members who can’t afford to make regular visits can book time online with the robot, and then control it from their own computer.

Houhou said the system provides big advantages over basic Skype video chats or phone calls. The fact that the robot can follow a resident around often leads to longer calls and interactions. And in many cases, residents may not be capable of using a computer or holding a phone for extended periods.

More importantly, whether its Milo or the telepresence robot, Houhou says the robots create a more enhanced feeling that the person is closer.

“The robot is a presence,” Houhou said. “You are not there, but it feels more like a real person.”

The NCES hasn’t published data for degrees conferred after 2013. Since the first coding boot camps were founded in 2011 and 2012, there’s no clear impact here, but note that computer science degrees had already seen a sharp decline since their peak in 2003.

An analysis of this NCES data by IT World concludes, “despite the red hot market for developers, it doesn’t seem that the rate at which undergrad students are choosing to major in computer science is increasing.” In fact, over roughly the same period of time that computer science degrees dropped, the tech sector experienced remarkable growth.

And while computer science degrees have been losing steam, interest in coding bootcamps has exploded. Course Report’s 2015 Bootcamp Market Size Study estimates that coding bootcamps will train “an estimated 16,056 graduates in 2015, up from 6,740 in 2014.” If their prediction is correct, coding bootcamps will have trained about a third of the number of 2013’s computer science graduates (50,962).* And Course Report estimates a drop to 48,700 computer science grads in 2014.

These market size estimates come from Course Report’s comprehensive survey of bootcamps like Dev Bootcamp and General Assembly. They show approximately 280 percent year-over-year growth for the bootcamp market. Notably, that number doesn’t include online programs like Bloc (my company) or Udacity; so the actual figure could be substantially larger.

Meanwhile, computer science job openings continue to grow at a tremendous rate, and most of the people filling those job openings don’t have a computer science degree. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economics and Statistics Administration wrote in a July 2014 report that “only 35 percent of college-educated computer and math workers have a degree in computer science or math.” (Only about two-thirds of STEM workers have a college degree at all.)

The job outlook for software developers is growing at 22 percent, or “much faster than average,” according to the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. And Robert Half Technology, one of the country’s largest tech staffing firms, says in its 2016 report that “employment offers are fiercely competitive: Above-market pay and other attractive financial incentives are common, and offers may include stock options, flexible work schedules, and other perks.”
