Baidu to Launch Siri-Like Service

Yue Guofeng, Vice GM of Baidu Mobile・ Cloud Computing division lately said at an event that the Chinese search titan would soon launch its own Siri-like personal assistant, probably in this month.

Speech recognition wouldn’t be a major problem for Baidu, Yue said so since the company had made some work beforehand, thinking of the voice input feature added into Baidu mobile search lately. “Voice and Visual are the two most natural interactions. Face recognition has been applied to Baidu Album, and in the future we’d love to explore more on that front, including technologies like AR. ”

iFlytek, a Chinese company already had similar offerings earlier this year dubbed iFlytek Yudian. The company’s speech-recognition technology comes with an accuracy rate of more than 90% in terms of Mandarin Chinese. Other than accuracy, it could also do lots of chores for you, just like your personal assistant at hand. For example, you can tell the phone to “text Ben, let’s have dinner tomorrow night 8”, it will translate your speech to texts and ask for your confirmation before sending out.

Yue didn’t reveal further details on how Baidu’s Siri would work though.

Thailand’s online gaming market to reach US$132M by 2014

Online gaming has been a strong industry in Asian countries, especially in South Korea. Taking a closer look at Southeast Asia, Thailand’s gaming market is proving to be quite promising.

From 2003 to 2008, Thailand’s online gamine industry grew between 15 to 25 percent year-on-year with Asiasoft reporting a market growth of 23 percent year-on-year from 2009 to 2010. The market increased from US$68.3 million in 2009 to US$82.4 million in 2010 and is expected to reach US$132 million by 2014.

Much of the growth of online gaming in Thailand can be attributed to the growth of broadband Internet, the variety of games available and the decrease in hardware prices.

In 2011, Asiasoft and True occupied over 50 percent of the market share in Thailand. MMORPG games are the most popular type of online games played in the country, capturing over half of the market share, followed by FPS games with 26 percent share.

According to Pipal Research, The growth of online gaming has affected the gaming value chain significantly by removing distributors and retailers. Leading game publishers themselves are now engaged in the distribution of their games, sometimes working with Internet service providers as aggregators and distributors for these games. For casual or social games, game portals such as Sanook and Kapook act as the substitute for distributors and retailers, linking consumers directly to publishers.

According to Paula Komalarajun, President of the Game & Interactive Digital Entertainment Association, “Thailand has a large number of ‘indy’ and freelance game developers who have developed games on many platforms, such as online, Facebook, iPhone and other mobile phone applications. But while Thai developers are very creative, they need to develop content management and planning skills.”

Key game developers in Thailand include Debuz, Digicrafts, Digitopolis Game Studio and Sanuk Software.

Creative Commons Indonesia Officially Launched Today

Creative Commons Indonesia was officially launched on Sunday following the 2012 Creative Commons Asia Pacific Conference which took place on Saturday in Jakarta. The launch signifies that Indonesia has become one of the 72 countries that recognize and provisions the use of Creative Commons licensing.

土曜日に行われた「2012 Creative Commons Asia Pacific Conference」の翌日の日曜日、Creative Commons Indonesiaが正式にローンチした。このローンチは、インドネシアがクリエーティブ・コモンズ・ライセンス（以下、CCライセンス）の利用を認め提供する72か国の1か国になったことを表す。

By having Creative Commons recognized, Indonesians are now free to apply the CC license to their works or use works covered by CC license and feel secure knowing that the use of the license is protected under Indonesian laws. Creative Commons licensing is an open license model which allows copyright holders to allow the public to use their works from the moment it’s published instead of having to make specific arrangements.

Despite today’s launch, many Indonesians have already taken advantage of CC licensing long before it was officially recognized in the country, with the understanding that CC licensing is already widely used in many other countries around the world.

クリエイティブ・コモンズを認めたことで、インドネシアの人は今や自由に彼らの作品にCCライセンスを申請したり、CCライセンスを受けている作品を活用したり、インドネシアの法律で保護されている同ライセンスの利用ができることを知り安心することができる。CCライセンスは公開ライセンスモデルで、著作権保有者が特別な手配をすることなく、公開された瞬間から彼らの作品を公共が利用できるようにするものだ。

Creative Commons Indonesiaがローンチしたのは本日ローンチなのだが、インドネシアの人は同国で正式に認められるずっと前からすでにCCライセンスを利用していた。CCライセンスが世界のその他の多くの国々ですでに広く活用されていることを理解していたからだ。

Creative Commons General Counsel Kat Walsh in her keynote speech said that having it recognized by the government allows many bodies of work to be more widely distributed without too many restrictions.

Walsh also said that when it comes to dealing with copyrights, typically governments would go to what is considered the traditional field of copyright holders, and that is the entertainment industry, specifically movie makers, book publishers, and musicians and they labels.

These days however, copyrighted works come not just form those fields and there are people who prefer to liberate themselves from the traditional idea of copyright. This is where Creative Commons licensing would step in as these works still need to be protected and have their creators or rights holders recognized.

Ari Juliano Gema, Legal Lead for Creative Commons Indonesia, said to DailySocial that one of the biggest challenges right now has to do with how the country recognizes copyright ownership of images of Indonesian buildings.

だが、最近では、著作権のある作品はこういった分野だけではないし、従来通りの著作権という考え方から開放されたい人もいる。CCライセンスが介入するのはこういう時で、これらの作品は依然として保護される必要があり、クリエーターや権利保有者も認められる必要がある。

Creative Commons Indonesiaの法務責任者Ari Julian Gema氏は、現在直面している最大の課題の1つは、インドネシアが同国の建築物の画像の著作権保有者をどのように認めるかだとDailySocialに語った。

Indonesian law says that rights of pictures of Indonesian buildings belong to the architects of the buildings if they are known, or the government if they are not known, not the photographers. This has resulted in Wikimedia having to pull images depicting Indonesian buildings if it is not resolved soon.

This means Creative Commons Indonesia must discuss with the Indonesian architects association and find a way to allow the public to create of reproduce images of Indonesian buildings under Creative Commons licensing schemes. It’s more difficult if the rights happen to belong to the government.

インドネシアの法律では、同国の建築物の画像の権利はその建築物の建築家が分かっている場合はその建築家にあり、建築家が不明な場合は、写真家ではなく政府にその権利があることになっている。これが原因でWikimediaは、このことが早急に解決されなければ、インドネシアの建築物を写している画像を撤去しなければならない。

つまり、Creative Commons Indonesiaはインドネシアの建築協会と話し合い、公衆がCCライセンス取組のもとインドネシア建築の画像を複製できるようにする方法を見つけなくてはならない。もし、それらの権利が政府のものになれば、状況はもっと難しくなる。

The online education space is rapidly growing (it’s a $34 billion market). Whether your goal is to get college prerequisites out of the way or simply expand your knowledge, online learning sites are an affordable way to accomplish those goals. But creativeLIVE is not the only online learning destination; competitor sites include Coursera, Udacity, Khan Academy and BenchPrep, to name a few.

Khan Academy was founded in 2008 by Salman Khan. Initially, his intent was to teach his cousin math using instructional YouTube videos and it has since blossomed into 3,000 short, free lessons that anyone can access. Khan Academy recently launched its first iOS app so users can learn from their iPad.

New York City Regulators Propose Rules for Taxi Apps

Taxi apps have been at the center of controversy lately, with authorities claiming they violate the law and pose security risks. Due to regulatory disputes, cab startup Uber was forced to end its service in New York City two weeks ago.

Now, the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) is about to release new rules that would allow these startups to operate in the Big Apple. The authority will require them to work with the city’s own payment and trip-data system, according to the proposal. The companies will also have to obtain a one-year, renewable license from the TLC.

What’s more, taxi apps will have to allow payments with credit cards or cash, and set fares within the city’s Taxicab Passenger Enhancements Project (TPEP) system. In other words, the startups won’t be free to set their own fares. Tips will also be up to the rider (Uber, for example, sets a 20% mandatory gratuity in San Francisco).
