Smart energy firm gridComm closes S$689K funding from Get2Volume for more robust power lines

Get2Volume and Singapore’s National Research Foundation have funded smart grid startup gridComm for next-generation product development.

Green energy is a hot topic today, with greenhouse gases on the rise and global warming a threat to the environment. Singapore startup gridComm is addressing the need for more efficient power transmission through improving the reliability of data communications across the power grid.

gridComm and Get2Volume have announced a funding of S$689,000 (US$557,000), in order to better address the need for more efficient smart grid communications. “We are excited to incubate and fund gridComm to address industry in power line communications solutions,” said Get2Volume CEO Mike Holt.

gridComm has recently announced its GC9100 power line communications module and GC9200 DIN rail modem, providing robust and reliable power line communications. “We see significant demand for our power line communications modules for smart grid, street lights and industrial control applications,” said TL Nge, gridComm vice president of marketing and sales, noting that the investment will help the startup meet the growing demand for power line communication devices.

The market for these components in the next five years is projected at US$3 billion.

Get2Volume, headquartered in Singapore, is an incubator and accelerator that mentors and helps innovative early-stage microelectronics-centric startups grow, in partnership with the country’s National Research Foundation.

Vice President of Skype, Dan Neary, joins Facebook Asia Pacific

Facebook hires former Skype Vice President, Dan Neary, to head its global marketing solutions team in Asia Pacific.

Facebook announced that Dan Neary will be joining the social network giant as Vice President of Asia Pacific. Starting from early March, Dan will take over the leadership from Erik Johnson, who will be returning to the US.

Prior to joining Facebook, Dan was the Vice President and General Manager of Global Market Development at Skype. He was also the Vice President of Emerging Markets eBay where he focused on building the company’s business in South Asia, India, Middle East and Hong Kong.

Joining Facebook, Dan will lead the global marketing solutions teams across Asia Pacific and will play a key role in building and maintaining strategic relationships with top regional agencies and clients. Dan will be reporting directly to Carolyn Everson, Vice President of Global Marketing Solutions in London.

Spotify’s latest market launches in these three countries brings the total number of countries launched since 2008 to 20. Whilst not many compared to the likes of Deezer, who are now in more than 180 countries, Spotify’s country launches usually receive higher media attention. The person carrying the baton for Spotify is no stranger to the scene in Asia. Sriram Krishnan, whom Spotify hired a year and a half ago, is tasked to manage the new market launches in this part of the world. Spotify also recently announced that it is hiring in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Both country positions are ad-sales related, indicating the Spotify is preparing to start monetizing from their potential user base via advertising. Hopefully, we won’t be waiting too long for Spotify to arrive in this part of the world.

Music industry insiders have also been craving for Spotify’s presence in the region; Spotify is allegedly the second largest revenue source for labels worldwide and CEO Daniel Ek recently remarked on how it plans to pay out US$500 million to rights owners in this year alone.

With Deezer rapidly launching in new markets and its recent change in strategy to provide freemium, ad-supported subscriptions worldwide, will Spotify respond soon by taking a stronger hold of Asia and especially Southeast Asia?

Kakao Page launched as online marketplace for digital content

Kakao Page is an online distribution platform where content creators can sell their music, videos, e-books and other digital content to Kakao Talk’s market of 70 million users.

Even with the popularity of free apps and content meant for desktops and mobile devices, e-commerce platforms are optimistic that there will be a market for paid content online. The makers of Kakao Talk have announced plans for such a content marketplace, and the company has recently launched Kakao Page.

「Kakao Page」は、コンテンツのクリエーターがミュージック、動画、eブックやその他のデジタルコンテンツをユーザ7000万人のいるKakao Talkマーケットで販売することができるオンラインの配信プラットフォームだ。

Kakao Page targets the creative type, which includes artists, writers, musicians and other such individuals and groups. The platform can be used to sell and market songs, video and e-books to other users within the Kakao platform. Kakao CEO Brian Kim says Kakao Page is not just an online repository of digital content. “People upload content to places like the App Store and Google Play but the content doesn’t get any exposure. Kakao Page is a content distribution platform. Anyone can make content and Kakao Page puts it out there for everyone to see,” he said.

VentureSquare notes that the online platform might face a bit of a challenge at first, given the lack of free content. However, Kakao is optimistic it will reach its goal of 1 million profit-earning content creators within three years. The platform itself is free to access, although the company plans to take a percentage cut from content sales.

The launch of these new platforms is testament to the idea that the South Korean Kakao Talk can actually find a good business model for its mobile messaging app. The network has since grown to 70 million users, and growth has been fueled by the addition of a gaming platform, as well as “Chatting Plus,” which enables game and app developers to integrate Kakao Talk into their apps and platforms.

These consumers can make use of the financial services and Visa-quality payments to pay bills, remit money, top up airtime and buy train tickets.

Aircel, India’s fifth largest and fastest growing GSM mobile service provider and pan India operator, will be partnering with local banks to offer money services to mobile subscribers.
