Qihoo, Unsurprisingly,Launches A Separate Medical & Health Search Service

Qihoo 360 rolls out a new vertical search service, named Liang Yi (Good doctors in Chinese), for medical and health information. It has indexed 150 million webpages from 114 legitimate healthcare websites and 1716 official websites of hospitals’, according to Qi Xiangdong, president of Qihoo.

Qihoo 360が医療と健康に関する情報を提供するLiang Yi（中国語の意味：良い医者）と呼ばれる新たな縦型検索サービスをローンチした。同サービスには、ヘルスケア関連の正規ウェブサイト114件と病院の公式ウェブサイト1716件から1億5000万のウェブページを掲載しているとQihooのQi Xiangdong総裁は述べている。

Its default page, like the start-up page Qihoo runs, features keywords of diseases and healthcare websites. Clicking on a keyword, you’d be led to a sub-page where you can see information about the disease, hospitals and doctors that specialize in it — there are buttons that would direct you to the websites where you can make online reservations, and lastly search results.

Users can see the rating of each search result — from Qihoo’s website rating service, to the right. Qihoo said that they would stop indexing a website if the rating of it became too low.

Qihoo has been criticizing Baidu, its alleged competitor, for letting go of medical scam ads mixed in organic search results and claimed to offer medical information provided by China’s State Food and Drug Administration by partnering with Jike.com. Qihoo made it clear that they’d not feature medical & health ads on its so.com in order to grab the traffic from that on Baidu which reportedly accounts for 30% of Baidu’s advertising revenue. To respond, Baidu later announced to partner with Chinese authorities to offer verified legitimate medical information in search results.

At the press conference jointly held by Qihoo and Jike.com, Qihoo Qi Xiangdong said that So.com, launched as recently as last August, was aimed at 20% of China’s search market share this year and 40% in 2015.

Remember “China’s Facebook”? It’s Fighting Back Against WeChat With a New Messaging App

Once hailed as “China’s Facebook”, Renren (NYSE:RENN) has had a rough few years. First overtaken by microblogging (with new rivals Sina Weibo and Tencent Weibo) and then by group messaging (like WeChat), Renren hasn’t been able to grow its user-base that much. But it is diversifying. The latest spin-off for Renren is a messaging app to challenge the mighty WeChat, and it’s called TongXueShuo – literally meaning “classmates say”.

かつて「中国版Facebook」と謳われていたRenren（NYSE:RENN）はここ数年苦戦を強いられてきた。最初はマイクロブログサービス（新たなライバルサービスのSina WeiboとTencent Weiboなど）、その次はグループメッセージサービス（WeChatなど）に打ち負かされ、Renrenはユーザーベースをさほど伸ばすことができない状態にある。だが、同サービスは多様化しつつある。同社が展開する最新のスピンオフサービスは、大手WeChatに対抗するためのメッセージアプリ。そのアプリ名はTongXueShuo——文字通り「クラスメートが話す」という意味だ。

But it’s not restricted to campus buddies – and it’s not just confined to messaging. Renren’s TongXueShuo seems to throw in a lot of things in the hope that the mix will attract new users. There are elements of Path, Google+, regular social messaging apps, plus the find-and-flirt capabilities of apps like Momo.

The mobile-only TongXueShuo – with apps for iPhone and Android – came out quietly last month. Perhaps too quietly, as there has been no buzz surrounding it yet.

だが、同サービスが学生向けに限られているわけではないし、メッセージ機能だけというわけでもない。RenrenのTongXueShuoは、新しいユーザーを引き寄せようと多くの機能を取り入れているようだ。PathやGoogle+、通常のソーシャルメッセージアプリ、さらにはMomoのような出会い系サービスの機能要素もある。

モバイル専用のTongXueShuo（iPhone／Android向け）は、先月ひっそりとローンチされた。おそらく、あまりにもひっそりすぎたのだろう。同サービスに関する話題が一切ない。

TongXueShuo is not only up against the 300 million users on WeChat, but also incoming rivals like NHN Japan’s Line, which launched in China in December.

Last month, Renren also had a go at making a Snapchat-like app where the messages and images vanish after 10 seconds.

Renren’s main social network remains China’s seventh largest social network with about 170 million registered users.

Why working from home can be more disadvantageous than you think

Working from home might sound lovely but it can be terribly unproductive as well.

When Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer stopped some 200 employees from working from home, it stirred all sorts of controversies. Her reasoning and rationale behind the “ban” was that said group of employees was noted to not be as productive as their counterparts in the office. Some of these employees were reported to have been working on companies of their own, while still on Yahoo’s payroll.

在宅勤務が思った以上に不利益になりうる理由

在宅勤務は魅力的かもしれないが、かなり非生産的にもなりうる。

YahooのMarissa Mayer女史が200人ほどの社員に対し在宅勤務を禁じた時、ありとあらゆる論議が巻き起こった。彼女が在宅勤務を禁止した理由と根拠は、在宅勤務者がオフィス勤務者ほど生産性が良くないということだった。同社の在宅勤務者のなかには、Yahooから給料をもらう一方で、自分達自身のビジネスをおこなっていた人もいたようだ。

While Yahoo employees lamented about the new policy implementing rigid work hours and taking away what was once flexibility and work-life balance, a new infographic from Internet Provider ORG reveals that not allowing employees to work from home might be a good idea. We can understand why – it takes a lot of discipline to be able to concentrate on doing work … and not surfing Facebook and Twitter.

So what are other obstacles? Out of 24,000 people who were interviewed, 25 percent noted “no access to sensitive documents” and 26 percent reported “bad Internet connection.”

From the perspective of the employer, cost could be a reason why increasingly, more businesses are allowing their employees to work from home. However, there might just be more pros than cons when it comes to working with others in the office. For example, fostering ties between office co-workers could be one. We are, after all, creatures that thrive on good social interaction. Could working at home strip that interaction away?

雇用主の側から見れば、社員の在宅勤務を認める企業がより一層増えている理由はコストの節約だろう。だが、オフィスで他の社員と一緒に働くことに関して言えば、悪い点よりも良い点のほうが多いのかもしれない。例えば、オフィスの社員同士の繋がりを育てるというのも良い点の1つだ。結局のところ、私達は良い社会的な繋がりがあってこそ繁栄する生き物なのだ。在宅勤務はそういう社会的繋がりを取り去ってしまうのだろうか？

Kids in Shanghai Will Have A “Digital Schoolbag” and Read Digital Textbooks

Shanghai’s education administration is working on a Digital Schoolbag project, going to launch some digital textbooks this year (in Chinese). Previously digital blackboard and PowerPoint Presentation were the only adopted digital means. Now schools in Shanghai are trying out a variety of digital products.

A system called “Adaptation” can analyse a kid’s homework and show more tailored to him or her.

Digital student ID is also under test for better managing student data. Visits to museums or other social activities will be recorded through devices deployed at those locations. With the ID system, students can choose anyone of the PE exam centers in Shanghai to take a test.

A cloud-based class inventory will help kids who are living in suburbs and with poorer education resources to access quality classes offered by better equipped schools. It is said that Shanghai Remote Education Group has had a large amount of digital education content that will be shared to Shanghai citizens.

As the digital schoolbag is largely based on iPad, parents concern that kids may play games instead of studying or being glued to an iPad may hurt kids’ eyes. Anyway, Ni Minjing with Shanghai’s education administration says that education digitization is unavoidable.

Schools in some districts of Shanghai are testing new teaching methods at classes taking advantage of the digital schoolbag project. Other efforts include software helping connecting schools and parents.

だが、この「デジタルスクールバッグ」は主にiPadを使用することになるので、父兄は子供が勉強もせずにゲームで遊んでしまうとか、iPadに目が釘付けになり子供の目に悪いのではないかと懸念している。それでも、上海市教育委員会のNi Minjing氏は、教育のデジタル化は避けられないと語る。

Silicon Valley’s Fenox Venture Capital invests in Japanese green energy company IACC

Silicon Valley-based Fenox Venture Capital has announced today that it has invested in IACC, a Japanese startup that is running a solar power marketplace based in Japan. The company has amassed USD 10M in revenue in the last fiscal year, representing a 500 percent year-on-year growth.

The marketplace, called Green-EnergyNavi, matches solar power products to consumers’ energy requirements. The website contains user reviews and cost estimates for a specific item, allowing consumers to select products that best meet their needs.

シリコンバレーのFenox Venture Capitalが日本のグリーンエネルギー企業IACCに出資

シリコンバレーに拠点をおくFenox Venture Capitalが、日本で太陽光発電プロダクトのマーケットプレイスを運営する日本のスタートアップIACCに出資したことを本日発表した。IACCは2012年の会計年度に1000万ドルの収益を上げ、前年対比で500％を成長を遂げた。

The website has an additional informational element, providing best practices and guides to government subsidies and tax incentives for adopting solar energy.

As of February 2013, the startup claims to have some 40,000 subscribers and 400 manufacturers and service providers online. IACC says that about 300,000 Japanese households install alternative energy sources each year. Besides consumers, the company is also supplying green services to corporations.

Following the investment, IACC will launch operations in North America, where public-listed green energy provider SolarCity is expanding quickly in the United States in the midst of healthy competition.

While Fenox is based in the United States, it has started looking at Asian startups. It specializes in offering investees assistance to help them expand globally through its connections in the US and Europe.

10 Philippine startups get seed funding from IdeaSpace

Philippine startup incubator IdeaSpace has announced the ten winners of its national startup competition. The startups will each receive P500k (USD 12k) in seed funding and six months of incubation, where they will get office space, business operations support, and housing facilities for those not based in Metro Manila.

During the incubation period, the more promising startups could receive additional cash support from IdeaSpace of up to P5 million. Teams will also be introduced to other investors in Philippines, Silicon Valley, and other parts of the world.

What’s striking about the finalists are the types of problems they’re trying to solve. While they include your usual, hardware, software, and mobile startups, a large amount of them are tackling opportunities in agriculture, energy, healthcare, and transport. These finalists were picked from over 700 entries.

IdeaSpace was launched in March 2012 as a non-profit organization that has drawn support from First Pacific Company, Metro Pacific Investments and the PLDT group, chaired by successful tech entrepreneur Manuel V. Pangilinan. It has received P500 million (USD 12.1M) in funding for five years. IdeaSpace’s CEO is Earl Valencia (his story here).
