SparxUp show takeaways: hidden treasures in feature phones, will more local players rush in?

SparxUp in Jakarta has concluded, and our Indonesia-based correspondent has a wrap-up of the morning sessions.

The three-day startup event in Jakarta with hackathon, competition, awards and conference has just ended. The event started with a 15-hour develop-an-app event on October 3, where around 70 teams were seen fighting for the US$ 1,100 grand prize, plus other prizes from the sponsors.

Hackathon

The hackathon was kicked-off by Narendra Wicaksono presenting about app development in the Nokia and Windows platforms. Then, Foursquare’s Akhsay Patil talked about their location-based service API, and Tianglim Foo discussed Evernote. Each participant was required to develop one Windows Phone application by leveraging one of the BliBli, Foursquare or Evernote APIs.

In the evening, participants were asked to present the product they have developed in front of six judges: BliBli’s Nanang Nur Jamal, DailySocial’s Wiku Baskoro, Evernote’s Tianglim Foo, Foursquare’s Akhsay Patil, Freelancer.com’s Willix Halim and Nokia’s Narenda Wicaksono. Concept, functionality and technical complexity were the main considerations for selecting the winner.

The second day was likewise called Demo Day, where 13 out of 14 SparxUp Awards 2012 finalists were allowed to pitch in the following categories: Internet/Mobile Portal, Gaming, Productivity, E-Commerce, and Social Network.

DailySocial’s Aulia Masna, Edi Taslim from Kompas.com, Shinta Dhanuwardoyo from Nusantara Ventures and William Henley from IndoSterling Capital were sitting as judges.

Feature phones not dead

Blaast CEO and Co-Founder Joonas Hjelt keynoted at the event, and he highlighted how the Finnish company ventured into Indonesia’s feature phone market, which he says has an almost 80% penetration rate. The huge potential is unfortunately untapped by local players.

To date, Blaast supports more than 2,000 devices, and claim they work better than their rival smartphone platforms by providing data optimization, so that wireless data is reduced to only 10% of of its original size. Unsurprisingly, their target market is mostly young urban people, 13-29 years old, tech savvy, hyper social, and price-sensitive both on data plans and the device itself.

Social commerce

Blibli’s marketing guru Ivan Hudyana shared tips on how to be a successful e-commerce company. He unveiled some figures on Google searches for online shopping: 2.4 million hits per day. Indonesia’s market fo online shopping activities is sustainable at 4 to 7% per year.

He also highlighted the use of social media for e-commerce, which is an effective way to reach the biggest age group in Indonesia: the 15 to 19 year old demographic, who are very social individuals. Blibli Friends, a program empowers members to do product reviews, was launched to address this need.

Panel sessions

In the first panel session, Ferry Tenka pointed out two challenges that his own Groupon Indonesia currently faces: online payment systems and logistic partners. Hendrik Tio said half of Bhinneka orders came from their call center, while the rest was equally divided between offline and online stores. Blibli’s Ivan added the importance of having call center facilities for e-retailers, which will build trust through human interaction and enhance buying experience.

To reach traction in the local market, Freelancer plans to open an office in Indonesia soon. Note: the localized site in Bahasa Indonesia has just launched few weeks ago.

The original junk plastic shroud these watches come with has been replaced with an aftermarket aluminum one that is very desirable and obviously will not crack like all the plastic ones do. I am including the original plastic one with the sale, but it is cracked and not really needed as it has been replaced with the aluminum one. I also am including the instruction booklet that is seen in the pics. All of the functions work but occasionally the light function requires a harder push and the pusher is a little sticky so it comes back out a little slow, but that is not every time and like I said, it still functions. Often if you can find one of these, some of the functions do not work.
