Baidu down, Qihoo up, Google dead: 2013 was a year of drama for China’s search engines

Baidu down; Qihoo up; Google dead. That’s the summary of what happened to search engines in China in 2013. It was a year of big and dramatic changes.

Baidu’s (NASDAQ:BIDU) slide was put into motion in the summer of 2012 when web portal company and software maker Qihoo (NYSE:QIHU) unleashed its brand-new search engine. Much of Qihoo’s gain – thanks to web searches stemming from its Internet Explorer-esque browser – came at the expense of Baidu.

Baidu（NASDAQ:BIDU）の下降は、2012年夏、ポータルサイト企業でありソフトウェア開発も手がけるQihoo（NYSE:QIHU）が新たな検索エンジンを出した頃に、その動きを見せ始めた。Qihooの大きな躍進は、インターネットエクスプローラーであるesque browserに起因するインターネット検索によって、Baiduの脅威となった。

China’s search engine leader entered 2013 with 71.7 percent market share of page-views, but Baidu ended the year with just 63.1 percent. Meanwhile, Qihoo rocketed from 10.4 percent in December 2012 to 22.5 percent in December 2013 data from CNZZ.

中国における検索エンジンの最有力であったBaiduは、71.7%のページ閲覧シェアをもって2013年に入ったが、その年の暮れには63.1%と下降して終えた。一方で、CNZZのデータによると、Qihooは2012年12月には10.4%であったシェアを、2013年12月には22.5%と大きな躍進を見せた。

Google stares into the abyss

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) had already been struggling since early 2010 when the Silicon Valley giant shuttered its Chinese search engine – it was at Google.cn – so as not to comply with China’s media censorship laws. However, its Google Hong Kong search engine is partially blocked by China’s Great Firewall, and it’s a lottery if the Google.com.hk page loads or not. Google has a mere 1.6 percent market share as a search engine in China in December 2013, compared to the 11.25 percent share it had in December 2010. It was already tanking in 2012, but 2013 was the year that Google slid into oblivion in China, barely ahead of Bing and Yahoo.

Who’s winning mobile search?

While that looks worrying for Baidu, the company can gain some comfort from the fact that it has the best smartphone strategy and mobile app ecosystem of any of its local rivals. Certainly way ahead of Qihoo, whose mobile search engine is about five years behind the curve.

As shown in the image below, Qihoo’s search engine (so.com) gives you a bunch of links when you search “Starbucks” on your phone, whereas Baidu actually makes itself useful (if you scroll down the first page a bit) by showing you the nearest Starbucks branches along with a handy button for you to call the store. When I search for something on my phone, it’s usually because I need local information, but Qihoo still has none of that.

2014 will be a year of intensifying rivalry between Baidu and Qihoo – not just for search engine users, but for web users and app downloads across numerous areas, such as anti-virus apps, web browsers, Android app store users, and music streaming. And those are just the current clash points between the two firms. More will emerge in the new year.

2014年はBaiduとQihooの競争を激化さえる年になろう。それは検索エンジンのユーザにおいてだけではなく、アンチウイルスアプリケーション、ウェブブラウザ、Androidアプリケーションユーザや音楽ストリーミングなどといった多くの分野におけるアプリケーションのダウンロードであり、ウェブユーザだ。そしてそれらはその2つの会社が、現在、競い合っている分野に過ぎない。近い将来、もっと多くのものが生まれてくるに違いない。

Ferry Tenka, Co-founder and CEO, Bilna said, “We are thrilled to have the additional support of world-class investors such as DGI, TMS and Golden Gate Ventures in our quest to be Indonesia’s most customer-centric e-commerce.”

However, the management was said to have set out “aggressive targets” for the year ahead. In 2014, Bilna will be launching more co-promotions with principals, banks, media companies and telecom companies. Himawan said, “What we saw in 2013 was only the tip of the iceberg.”

At the moment, the team has more than 70 staff and will be looking to double its headcount in 2014.

In Indonesia, Bilna’s main competitor is Tororo, a new online store for baby products headed by Ken Dean Lawadinata, who is also the CEO of Kaskus, an Indonesian forum. However, in the region, there are e-stores such as Ta Em Be in Vietnam, and Singapore-based White As Milk, dealing with the vertical.

One government office in the Philippines lets people pay their taxes online

In terms of service in government offices, the Philippines is generally very traditional. That means a preference for cash payments instead of online payments, despite the available means to enter the 21st century. It often causes slow processing times and long queues. But one city government in the Philippines is trying to change that. The local government of Valenzuela City now lets citizens pay vehicle license fees, and business and real property taxes at city hall in new ways – through credit and ATM cards, and via mobile payments.

In a notice on the city’s website, Valenzuela City information officer Ahna Mejia says the system is part of a local program to simplify tax payments. So the card-based payments can now be paid through the point-of-sale (POS) machines that the Development Bank of the Philippines has installed in its taxpayer’s lounge. It also accepts payments from mobile payment platforms such as Smart Money, the e-wallet service run by telco Smart, and rival Globe Telecom’s G-Cash.

What does this mean?

By allowing online and electronic payments, it streamlines the process and lessens queues in government offices.

The Makati City government office makes for a good comparison. Since it still uses cash for its payroll of over 9,000 employees, it causes downtime for the entire office.

Clearly, a swipe of an ATM or credit card or a few clicks through an m-payment gateway can make things simpler. And safer for people. Plus, it can help lessen under-the-table charges on cash transactions – ie: bribery.

Challenges vs opportunities

The Philippines leads in mobile payments in Asia, and with the availability of the telco’s e-wallets, it’s something that citizens can take advantage of with ease.

But the banking penetration rate in the Philippines is at just 27 percent. And from this number, only three percent own a credit card. So are people ready for what Valenzuela City is rolling out to its citizens?

The Valenzuela City government also plans on expanding the system to include payments for business permits and license fees, public market and stall retail fees, and public terminal and parking fees. It also aims to use the m-payment service for its payroll system and payment of utility bills in the near future.

It is said to be the first time for a municipality to do this in the Philippines. Perhaps it will kickstart other local authorities to modernize. Once more cities offer this, the more efficient the country becomes. Also, who knows, it might help increase usage of online payment in the Philippines for e-commerce as well.

It comes "error" when I type letters except for alphabets in the Screen Name space. Which file do I need to edit to type alphabets as well as Japanese letters? Perhaps, it may be supposed to reject any letters except for alphabets.
