Hands-on with the new Xiaomi Mi 4 (VIDEO)

Xiaomi’s new flagship phone, the Mi 4, was revealed in Beijing yesterday, and Tech in Asia was on site to get a hands-on demo.

On paper, the phone is pretty much what most expected: high end stats for a great value at just RMB 1,999 (US$322). You can compare the specs with Xiaomi’s previous flagship, the Mi 3, at the bottom of this article.

This latest incarnation bears a stronger resemblance to the iPhone than its predecessors, thanks in large part to the rounded corners and the metal band made of a single piece of galvanized metal that borders the entire edge of the phone.

Xiaomiの新旗艦携帯電話Mi 4は昨日北京で発表された。また、Tech in Asiaは発表会場に参列し操作実地体験をした。

新聞では、大方が予想していた装置よりもっと良いものであるとしている。その分けは「1999元（322米ドル）の程よい値段で高級装置のステータスをを持っている。この記事の後半に掲載されているXiaomiの以前の旗艦機種Mi 3とスペックを比較できる。」としている。

この最新情報は、大部分のハウジングが丸みを帯びていて、携帯電話全体を縁取る一体の亜鉛メッキをした金属のおかげで、Mi 4が以前の機種Mi 3よりもっとiPhoneに類似したところを持っている。

But upon picking it up and inspecting it closer, the differences become more clear. The 5-inch Xiaomi is light for its size, and it still feels a bit flimsy as a result. The back panel of the display model I tested didn’t quite fit flush on all sides.

Taking a page from the book of new rival OnePlus, those Mi 4 back covers are swappable with dozens of designs, including wood (as shown here), leather, fabric, and jade.

Xiaomi did an admirable job of maximizing screen space and minimizing the amount of bezel around the display. The company claims its color range is even higher than the iPhone by using Adobe’s RGB color scale.

しかし、Mi 4を手に持ち注意深く調べてみると、その違いか更に明確になる。5インチのXiaomiはそのサイズにしては軽く、その結果として更に壊れ易い感じがする。私が試験をしたモデルのディスプレイの背面パネルは全ての隅において平坦になっていない。

新競合会社OnePlusが発行した本の1ページに掲載されている記事によれば、Mi 4には、木（ここに掲載）、革、繊維、そしてヒスイ等、交換可能な沢山の背面パネルがある

Xiaomiは、表示スペースの最大化や、ディスプレイ周りの縁を最小化する本当に見事な細工をした。同社はMi 4の色範囲はAdobeのRGBカラースケールを使用することでiPhoneよりもっと広いレンジを持っていると主張している。

And then there’s the camera, which was downright impressive in my short time with the phone. The f/1.8 aperture 13MP shoots nearly as quickly as you can press the button. It compensates well for backlight and colors are vibrant. Here’s a sample photo:

One disappointing oversight is the lack of NFC capability. It’s surprising to see any new name-brand Android phone without it these days, and it just seems silly not to include it in a flagship model.

また、搭載されているカメラは、私が携帯電話を試験していた短い間にも正に強い印象を受けた。f/1.8の開口部を持つ13MPのカメラはシャッターボタンを押すと同時にシャッタが切れる。画像はバック ライトが補整され、色は鮮やかである。これが見本画像だ。

試験をしていて一つがっかりした事はNFC（近距離無線通信）機能が搭載されていないことである。現状Androidを搭載した新規のメーカーもの携帯電話にNFC機能が搭載されていないものがあるのを見ることは驚くことで、また、旗艦モデルにその機能を搭載しないことは馬鹿げた頃であるように思える。

All in all, the Xiaomi Mi 4 lives up to expectations as a great value phone with specs and style to boot. If you can overlook some shortcomings in the build quality and the lack of NFC, it should definitely be on your back-to-school shopping list come August (September if you’re on China Mobile).

全体的な印象は、XiaomiのMi 4は携帯電話初心者には程よい価格とスペック、そしてスタイルを持つ期待に沿える携帯電話である。製造品質とNFCを搭載していないという不十分な点を気にしないのであれば、8月（China Mobileであれば9月）に学校が再開するときの購入リストに確実の載せるべきである。

Xiaomi’s first batch of Mi 3 phones in India sells out in 38 minutes

Earlier this afternoon, China-based phonemaker Xiaomi announced the end of its first-ever flash sale in India. According to a Facebook post, a batch of the company’s high-end Mi 3 devices, retailing at RS13999 (about US$230) sold out in 38 minutes.

Tracking Xiaomi’s flash sales numbers can get quite silly, since flash sales are designed to fill orders in short periods of time.

While the company hasn’t officially revealed how many users successfully snagged a Mi3 during the sale, it did reveal that over 100,000 potential customers registered to participate in it. Last Friday, at Xiaomi’s launch event in Bangalore, Hugo Barra told a group of journalists the company intended to sell 5,000 devices – so if that’s indeed how many phones users obtained, it would seem that demand in India looks promising.

Xiaomi stated that it will work with Flipkart to make the experience smoother in the future.

In other Xiaomi news, the company today pulled the curtains on its latest flagship device, the Mi 4, along with a wristband tracker set to retail for just over US$10.

We also use the chemicals in dye processing, but those chemicals have passed the Japanese safety standard as well.

The strength of Xiaomi – Internet ecosystem

Xiaomi is a mobile Internet company, they never position themselves as a pure smart phone maker. For Xiaomi, a phone is just a device to a bigger Internet ecosystem.Similar with Apple’s iOS, iTunes and App Store, Xiaomi is building its own ecosystem with MIUI, which is built on top of Android. However for now, it seems that MIUI is a little hyped up as besides user interface (design theme), we don’t see much improvements in terms of functionality.
