Cocooning is the name given to the trend that sees individuals socializing less and retreating into their home more. The term was coined in the 1990s by Faith Popcorn, a trend forecaster and marketing consultant. Popcorn identified cocooning as a commercially significant trend that would lead to, among other things, stay-at-home electronic shopping. Since Popcorn coined the term, the trend has continued. The creation of the internet, home entertainment technology, advances in communication technology (cellphones, PDAs, and smartphones) which allow "work-at-home" options, and demographic changes have made cocooning an increasingly attractive option.

マイホーム主義というのは、社交的に活動せず自宅にこもることの増えた個々人の傾向に対して付けられた名前である。この言葉は、トレンド予想者でマーケティングコンサルタントの Faith Popcorn 氏の造語である。Popcorn 氏はこれを、商業的に重要なトレンド、とりわけ、自宅での電子ショッピングにつながるであろう、重要なトレンドだと考えていた。自宅での娯楽用の技術としてのインターネットの誕生、「自宅労働」という選択を可能にする通信技術（携帯電話や携帯情報端末やスマートフォン）の進展、および人口統計の変化によって、マイホーム主義は魅力的な選択肢となったのである。

Norton Reveals The Shocking Scale of Cyber Crime in Asia

The money - and value of time - lost to cyber crime. In India it amounts to about US$4 billion per year.


Norton has released a report on the current cyber crime situation across the world. It claims, for example, that just over one million people each day fall victim to a new online crime, and the cost of money stolen totals over US$300 billion. It’s also alarming to note that web users in developing countries are more likely to fall prey to online felons.

The research was conducted in partnership with the international research agency StrategyOne, by conducting online surveys amongst nearly 20,000 people in 24 countries – even including children . Here, I’ve tried to summarise the report from an Indian perspective:

“Cybercrime” in India

According to Norton, the Indian population that was surveyed spent an average of 30 hours per week online, as compared to the global average of 24 hours per week. The time spent online echoes the fact that most of us in India are now using the Internet to fulfill all our needs – from work to personal – and a great deal of it on our mobiles.

今回の調査は国際的な調査機関 StrategyOne の協力の下でおこなわれ、24ヶ国、子どもを含むおよそ2万人を対象にオンラインでアンケートを実施した。ここでは、1人のインド人の観点からこの報告書を要約してみた。


インドにおけるサイバー犯罪

ノートンによれば、調査を受けたインドの人々は平均で週に30時間、インターネットを利用しているとのことだ。他方、世界平均は週24時間である。この時間が反映しているのは、インドにいる大部分の人が今やインターネットを使って、公私にわたり必要を満たしているという事実、それも多くは携帯電話でそうしているという事実である。

Japan’s DeNA Acquires Gaming Studio in Vietnam

We just received word from Japanese mobile social gaming company DeNA announcing that it plans to pick up Punch Entertainment Vietnam, the Hanoi-based studio owned by Punch Entertainment, Inc. in California.

The company’s announcement elaborated that Punch Entertainment Vietnam will “provide engineering support” to DeNA’s Mobage development team in Japan, and later elsewhere. President Isao Moriyasu commented on the acquisition:

日本のDeNA、ベトナムにゲーム開発拠点を獲得

日本のソーシャルゲーム会社 DeNA は、カリフォルニアの Punch Entertainment, Inc. の子会社で、ハノイに拠点を置く Punch Entertainment Vietnam（PEV） を買収すると発表した。

同社の発表によれば、PEV は日本や海外における Mobage 開発チームに対し「技術面での援助を与える」だろう、とのことである。代表取締役社長の守安功はこの買収に関して以下のようにコメントした。

"[PEV] is an excellent addition to DeNA’s first party game development team with its proven track record of developing cross-platform social games. We believe the acquisition will significantly accelerate DeNA‘s game development and deliver high-quality social games for the Mobage platform."

We don’t know too much about Punch Entertainment Vietnam, but a selection of games that it has developed is listed here. It seems one of its titles, Ego, took the Most Innovative game award way back in 2008 thanks to its social networking-based approach to mobile gaming. That certainly sounds like a natural fit.

PEV について多くのことはわからないが、PEV が開発した主なゲームはここにリストアップされている。その一つ、Ego はソーシャルネットワークを基にしたモバイルゲームへの取り組みで、2008年、最も革新的なゲームに贈られる賞を受賞した。今回の買収も至極当然のように思える。

A representative with DeNA tells Penn Olson this afternoon that it is “acquiring the high-quality ‘hands’ that [are] very well accustomed to developing social games for smartphones.” He added “We are hoping to support the overall ecosystem of local developers as well.”

This is just the latest in a flurry of announcements from DeNA this summer, including its most recent one regarding the establishment of DeNA Asia, headquartered in Singapore.

7notes Converts Your Handwritten iPad Notes

At the Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Tokyo today, Japanese company Metamoji gave a short presentation about its recently launched 7notes app. It’s a handwriting conversion application that despite still being very young has already reached a number of significant milestones.

The iPad version was the top paid application in the Japanese App Store for a month. It’s now in the fifth spot. And the iPhone version was the second top-grossing app in the app store at one point. The new English version ranked in the top ten in 21 countries, with downloads from over 80 countries.

7notes が iPad の手書きノートを変える

東京の日本外国特派員協会で、今日、日本の会社 Metamoji は最近で提供開始したアプリ「7notes」の短いプレゼンテーションをおこなった。このアプリは手書きの文字を変換するもので、まだ発売されて間もないにもかかわらず、既に重要な段階に達している。

iPad 版の 7notes は、日本の App Store で一ヶ月間、売上高がトップで、現在も5位だ。iPhone 版は第2位を記録したこともある。新しい英語版は21ヶ国でランキング1位を獲得し、80ヶ国以上でダウンロードされている。

Metamoji cited a huge gap between computers and human devices. The company’s CEO, Mr Ukigawa, explained that when the iPad came along they decided to change their application development to focus on the iPad. He referred to the poor user experience of the iPad’s software keyboard, which many feel is not the best way to input text. Many find it hard to type fast. The company’s 7knowledge subsidiary for smartphone and tablet apps then developed this 7notes application.

Handwriting conversion can be handy in certain situations, and the 7notes app appears to work very well. The demos that I saw this afternoon showed quick conversions, with great accuracy too. Even when the user has no time for conversion, they can just keep writing and come back for ‘post-processing’ conversion later on.

There are free versions in the App Store (iPad | iPhone), but it does not include the handwriting conversion feature. A natural question to ask here is what good is the free app without the conversion feature? The answer lies in the prediction engine.

手書き文字を変換することはかなりの状況で役立ちうる。私が見る限り、7notes の機能はとてもよいもので、午後におこなわれたデモンストレーションでも迅速かつ正確な変換をしてみせていた。文字を変換する時間がないときでも、書かれた文字を維持し、後に「後処理」として変換することができる。

App Store には（iPad, iPhone ともに）無料版もあるが、それには手書き文字を変換する機能はついていない。この変換機能を搭載していない無料アプリに何のメリットがあるのか、というのは当然の疑問だろう。その答えは予測機能にある。

When writing on the software keyboard, the app gives suggested words that you can tap before it finishes. You don’t have to write out the entire word. Of course, in the premium version, the predictive engine is especially useful. It remembers the previous input, so if you start writing a sentence you’ve written before, it will present that as a clickable option.

ソフトキーボードで書くと、書き終えていない時点で、そこから連想された単語がいくつか表示され、ユーザーはその言葉をタップできる。つまり、単語をきちんと最後まで書く必要はないわけだ。当然、有料版は特に使いやすくなっている。以前に入力したものを覚えるのである。以前に書いた文を書き始める場合は、クリックするだけで文全体を表示してくれる。

Interestingly, the handwriting can be manipulated like digital font, with editing and features like wrap, font size, color, bold, and underline. You can mix text and images, and you can do what the company describes as ‘social doodling’ by writing and sharing. Users can send notes to Twitter, Facebook, or email. And like any good note-taking app, you can also store your notes in Dropbox or Evernote.

面白いことに、手書き文字をデジタルのフォントのように処理することができる。ワードラップ機能がついていたり、フォントサイズや色の変更、太字にしたり下線を引いたりすることができるのだ。文字と絵を混ぜることもできる。また、ユーザーは会社が'social doodling' と呼んでいるものをすることができる。自分のメモをツイッターやフェイスブックを用いて発信できるのだ。他の評価のよいメモアプリと同様、このアプリを使って書いたメモも Dropbox や Evernote に保管することができる。

Overall I think that the app has a lot of very cool innovations. Would it fit anywhere into my own personal workflow? Maybe not right now. But this software is completely new, and I’m sure that once there’s more feedback from users, then future iterations will be significantly improved. The company is working on a Chinese prototype as well, so we can watch out for that in the future too.

Prior to India, Yuki also had the chance to travel to several other countries in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

While we were exploring India together, I didn’t have much time to pick his brain as my schedule was maxed out with meetings. It was only in the cab, while on the long journey to the Bengaluru airport, that I finally got a chance to really speak to Yuki. It was interesting to learn how Yuki sees and interprets things through the Japanese lens.

インドを訪れる前に、勇輝はインドネシアやマレーシア、シンガポールといった東南アジア諸国に訪れてもいた。

共にインドで企業家を周っていた間は、スケジュールが会議で埋まってしまっていたため、彼の脳みそを調査する時間を十分に取れなかった。バンガロール空港までの長旅の中で、ようやく勇輝と話す機会を得たのはタクシーの中だった。「日本人の目」を通して勇輝がどのように物事を見て解釈するかを知ることは面白かった。

Singapore

From what I have gathered, Yuki is enjoying Southeast Asian culture, especially Singapore. He told me that Singapore (yes – my country!) is orderly, safe, and connected — a good place to start a business. He says the tech start-up community is very connected, as a family might be. “Everyone I meet seems to know everyone who I’m about to meet or have met,” he remarked.

察するところ、勇輝は東南アジアの文化、とりわけシンガポールのそれを楽しんでいる。彼が語ったことによれば、シンガポール（いかにも、私の国だ）は平和で安全で、横のつながりも強く、ビジネスを始めるには絶好の場所だということだ。IT系の新設企業のコミュニティはとてもつながりが強く、一つの家族のようだと言う。「僕が会う人はみんな、僕がこれから会おうとしている人や既に会った人のことを全員知っているみたいなんだ」と彼は述べた。

During his stay in Singapore, Yuki met up with Chalkboard’s Bernard Leong, Plug & Play’s Wayne Soh, and also took a tour of the Singapore Management University (SMU) start-up incubator. Yuki also likes how the Singapore government is fostering entrepreneurship in the country by giving grants to help shoulder part of the risk for budding entrepreneurs. “You will not get such privilege in Japan. Singaporeans are very lucky,” he said.

シンガポールに滞在中、勇輝は Chalkboard の Bernard Leong、Plug & Play の Wayne Soh と会い、シンガポール経営管理大学（SMU）のインキュベーションセンターも訪れた。勇輝が気に入っているのは、企業家が芽を出すまで、シンガポール政府がリスクの一部を肩代わりして国内の企業家精神を育てている方法だ。「このような特権は日本にはありません。シンガポールはとてもラッキーだ。」

Malaysia

So, Singapore gets a +1 from Yuki, and Malaysia gets one too. He visited for the recent Barcamp at Kuala Lumpur and was very impressed by the geeky enthusiasm he received from locals. He explained that this particular Barcamp saw different folks across Southeast Asia get together to exchange ideas.

Besides tech, Yuki also noted that there are other simple but interesting money-making opportunities in the country. For example, he met a fellow Japanese who is selling second-hand factory-line machinery in Malaysia. Such used-and-abused machines are treated as junk in Japan, but Yuki found that they are worth a lot in Malaysia. “Besides the boom in tech start-ups, I see many opportunities in which entrepreneurs can make money in the region. Second hand machinery is one but I’m sure there are more of such opportunities,” he said.

テクノロジーのほかにも勇輝が注目したのは、お金を作るシンプルだが面白い機会だ。例えば、彼が現地で会った日本人の1人はマレーシアで中古の工場ラインの機械を売っていた。このような中古で酷使された機械は日本では廃品として扱われるが、マレーシアでは十分に価値のあるものなのだということに勇輝は気づいた。「IT系の新設企業のブームのほかにも、僕は企業家が地域でお金を作れる機会を数多く見ている。中古の機械は一例で、ほかにも似たような機会はたくさんあると確信している」と彼は語った。

What’s Wrong with Groupon in China?

Things have been looking sort of grim for Gaopeng.com, Groupon’s joint-venture in China with Tencent. Before the JV was even launched things were going wrong, with Groupon’s infamous Tibet Super Bowl ads that managed to make almost everyone angry. And, as we’ve previously reported, since Gaopeng has gotten underway, things haven’t gone much more smoothly. The company cut hundreds of staff members in China back in July, then did it again earlier this week. On top of that are concerning rumors of cashflow problems and allegations in the Chinese press that the most recent round of cuts saw employees fired quite suddenly, and with no reason for termination given.

Before we published this story, we got in touch with Groupon in the UK and in the US to see if we could get a comment on it (Gaopeng.com’s PR team had already told the Chinese media they would not comment, according to Chinese reports). Over the next few days, I receieved several emails from people at Groupon but no actual on-the-record comments, until today I was sent this:
