Wasu Media
This US$1.05 billion investment mostly came from Jack Ma and a handful of other investors, not from Alibaba. But Wasu has been Alibaba’s content partner ever since the two companies joined hands to release a set-top box. Another media play, Wasu helps Alibaba get its hands on more original content in the online video race. This investment in early April cemented that partnership. Wasu content can also be found online and on several smart TV models.

The partnership makes sense for both parties, as both companies have the rights to several popular mobile games that could be lucrative when they’re released into new markets. Tencent and Aiming are, in essence, just trading rights: Tencent gives Aiming’s games a new market in China, and Aiming gives Tencent’s games a new market in Japan.

Aiming’s popular mobile titles include Lord of Knights, Valiant Legion. The company previously developed games for PC and browser platforms, but has been focused on mobile since 2011.

Ma’s net worth has fluctuated greatly since the IPO due to surges and dips in stock prices, but he’s now estimated to be worth between US$28.7 billion and US$23.3 billion, according to Bloomberg and Forbes, respectively.

Xiaomi last month began fundraising at a valuation of US$40 billion to US$50 billion – higher than Sony and Lenovo. While that figure is hotly contested, Xiaomi’s explosive sales growth means it’s not totally far-fetched.

That puts Lei Jun’s share of Xiaomi at US$31 billion to US$38.9 billion, well above Ma and somewhere in the range of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

According to the CCTV report, the State Information Office has instructed local branches in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong, to “seriously investigate” the companies. Authorities have already spoken to the offending companies about their failure to follow the law, and some – perhaps all – of the offending content has been removed.

For example, China’s biggest gaming site 17173 made the list of offenders for operating a subsite at 818.17173.com that had nothing to do with video games, and instead was simply a frequently-updated collection of sexy photos. Visit that URL today, though, and you’ll find yourself redirected to 17173’s main site.

In fact, even when it has acquired a game, Tencent will often also develop its own copycat version of the game – often adding some local Chinese flavor to it in the process – just to make sure that all its bases are covered.

Striking gold with a game, especially a mobile game, might be somewhat a matter of luck, but Tencent’s dominance of iOS gaming in China this year (and PC gaming almost every year) suggests otherwise. That’s not luck, that’s a system. And Tencent’s results in gaming over the past decade show that whatever you think of it – many have criticized the company’s monetization methods and its copycat tendencies – there’s no doubt that the system works.

Ericsson told TechCrunch that it has spent three years attempting to engage Xiaomi, but to no avail. After Xiaomi allegedly refused to respond, Ericsson filed for the injunction, forcing Xiaomi into negotiations. Ericsson demands Xiaomi pay royalties for the relevant patents on products that connect to 2G (GSM), EDGE, and 3G networks.

Indian authorities have reportedly been dispatched to Xiaomi’s offices in India to assure the rules of the injunction are not broken, namely selling or importing more phones. The injunction did not specify which models are affected.

A Xiaomi representative sent the following statement to Tech in Asia, saying it has not yet heard from the court:

We haven’t received an official notice from the Delhi High Court. However, our legal team is currently evaluating the situation based on the information we have.
India is a very important market for Xiaomi and we will respond promptly as needed and in full compliance with Indian laws. Moreover, we are open to working with Ericsson to resolve this matter amicably.

Update on December 12: Xiaomi’s head of international Hugo Barra responded on Facebook to the injunction on behalf of the Mi India team:

But China has been notoriously protective of its domestic tech companies, which have gotten away with failure to pay royalties in the form of licensing fees in the past. Notably, chipset maker Qualcomm suffered a serious hit to its earnings after several phone makers using its chips refused to shell out. Chinese authorities then accused Qualcomm of price gouging, and the firm is now under investigation for breaking anti-monopoly and antitrust regulations.

As we’ve noted before, Xiaomi has a relatively minuscule amount of intellectual property in its patent portfolio compared to other phone makers of its size. These disputes are often settled through cross-licensing agreements – wherein Xiaomi would allow Ericsson access to its patents – but if Xiaomi doesn’t have enough IP that Ericsson wants, it would have to pay out of pocket or go to court.

Earlier this month, Xiaomi, Kingsoft, and a handful of other Chinese tech companies set up a US$35 million investment fund to develop and aggregate new IP.

Lancers could have IPO’d but it raised $8.5M instead. COO Adachi explains why

Tech in Asia learned today that freelance platform service Lancers secured US$8.5 million in funding from telco KDDI, human resource firm Intelligence, gaming company Colopl, and venture capital firms Gree Ventures, Globis Capital, and GMO Venture Partners.

The funding is a long-awaited counterpoint to the regular stream of positive PR coming from rival Crowdworks. Crowdworks is a more visible company in Tokyo’s startup community and is not shy about promoting itself. Since June, Crowdworks has sent out 26 press releases to Lancer’s 18.

The biggest news was of course the Crowdworks IPO. The company can expect to raise US$10 million with a market cap of about US$100 million. To go from zero to US$100 million in a scant three years is an impressive feat, but Lancers (which was founded back in 2008) is not worried.

COO Kazuhisa Adachi spoke with Tech in Asia today about the funding and the future of the company.

“More than trying to raise funds, we wanted to strengthen our business relationships so we proceeded with that goal in mind,” Adachi says. The funding deal comes packaged with business partnerships with KDDI, Intelligence, and Gree. “Particularly with KDDI and Intelligence, we can popularize crowdsourcing in the countryside and improve our service for non-internet companies,” he notes.

「資金を調達しようとするよりも、その目標に進む過程で、ビジネス上の関係を強固にしたかったのです。」と足立氏は話す。資金取引は、KDDI、IntelligenceやGreeとの事業提携の内容をパッケージ化する際に生まれたものだ。「特に、KDDIとIntelligneceとの提携を通して、あまり知られていなかったクラウドソーシングを一般に広め、非インターネット企業に向けたサービスの改善に取り組めるようになりました。」と彼は語る。

The strategy was born out of one key statistic: 55 percent of all work requests come from Tokyo, but 75 percent of that work is completed by freelancers outside of the city. The slipping economic power of Japan’s countryside is an open secret and makes the region a perfect target for Lancers.

The money itself will be disbursed for hiring, development, and freelancer support. A Rakuten veteran, Adachi sees the support system working similarly to the online shopping giant’s ecommerce consultant program. Consultants are assigned different shops in the marketplace and work with the owners to increase revenue.

For now, Lancers is not eyeing an IPO. The three-year head start it has on Crowdworks has kept it the market leader but its rival is not backing down. Aside from the IPO, always a cause for celebration in Japan, Crowdworks has some nifty friends as well. Its relationships include Softbank, MIT, Credit Saison, and noted insurance firm Lifenet.

That’s an impressive list but KDDI, Intelligence, and Gree will help keep Lancers in the driver’s seat a little while longer.

Alipay Wallet

Alipay Wallet, the full-fledged mobile app which evolved from Alipay’s mobile version, became an independent brand in November 2013. In contrast to the Alipay service on PC, Alipay Wallet has a local lifestyle service channel and a “Service Window”. With the lifestyle channel, users can buy digital membership cards, travel products, movie tickets, or book taxis from partnering businesses, while the Service Window is for merchants to send deals or promote content to subscribers.

The app had 190 million annual active users (>1 payment or money transfer in past 12 months) as of October this year.

Alipay Wallet

Alipay Walletは、Alipayのモバイル版を進化させた本格的なモバイルアプリで、2013年11月に独立したブランドになった。パソコン上のAlipayのサービスとの違いは、Alipay Walletには、現地のライフスタイル・サービス・チャンネルと「Service Window」がある点だ。ユーザーは、ライフスタイル・チャンネルを通して、デジタル会員カード、旅行用品や映画チケットの購入、提携企業のタクシー予約が可能だ。一方、Service Windowを利用すると、販売者は、加入者に対してお得な情報を送ったり、内容を宣伝したりできる。

アプリのアクティブユーザー（過去12ヶ月以内に支払いか送金を1度でもおこなった）は、今年の10月時点で、年間1億9千万人であった。

Alipay Wallet began actively expanding to offline from last year. It now supports payments for taxis and public transport, and is available at vending machines, convenience stores, department stores, pharmacies, hospitals, and parking lots.

Three months ago, Alipay Wallet unveiled over 60 APIs, encouraging third-party software developers to create applications or services for the app or to integrate its capabilities into their own mobile applications.

Alipay Walletは、昨年から、オフライン状況下でも積極的な広がりを見せている。現在、タクシーや公共交通機関への支払いが可能で、自動販売機やコンビニエンス・ストア、デパート、薬局、病院、駐車場などでも利用できる。

3ヶ月前、Alipay Walletは60以上のAPI（アプリケーション・プログラム・インターフェイス）を発表し、第三者のソフトウェア開発者に対して、Alipay Wallet対応アプリやサービスの開発を促し、自社のモバイルアプリへの技術の一本化を推進した。

Global Expansion

Alipay has sped up its global expansion this year. It is available in brick-and-mortar stores in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other regions. Chinese consumers are able to use it for purchases from Korea, Japan and U.S., or receive tax refunds after shopping in Europe.

Last week Alipay announced that it supports the purchase of local transportation cards of Macau, Thailand, Singapore and South Korea. Alipay Australia was announced last month.

Not an Alibaba Company Anymore

The business unit Alipay belongs to was spun off from Alibaba in 2011 and now is under majority ownership of Alibaba chairman Jack Ma and a partner of his. Alibaba claimed this was a response to regulations by the Chinese central bank which signalled they would only issue payment business licenses to “domestic PRC-owned” companies. The move greatly angered Yahoo! who then had a 40% stake in Alibaba, saying they were not notified of the transfer.
