Alibaba’s Jack Ma versus Xiaomi’s Lei Jun: who is really Asia’s richest man?

In September, Jack Ma was crowned China’s richest person after his company Alibaba set the record for the world’s biggest IPO. And just last week, many deemed him the richest man in Asia, surpassing property tycoon Li Ka-shing.

But yesterday, a US$200 million investment into appliance manufacturer Midea by smartphone maker Xiaomi revealed some new numbers that might make the analysts reconsider. As it turns out, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun owns a whopping 77.8 percent of his company – way more than Jack Ma owns of Alibaba at just 6.3 percent.

Singapore plans to introduce programming lessons in public schools to boost the economy

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), a government agency in charge of the country’s internet industry, is planning to progressively introduce software programming classes into public schools, giving students an opportunity to write code in a classroom setting. The news was first reported on Good Morning Singapore in mandarin yesterday.

Given the rapidly changing nature of the technology industry, the agency hopes to roll out these classes quickly in the next few months with the ultimate aim of keeping the Singapore economy at the top.

シンガポール国内インターネット産業を担う国家機関、The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore （IDA）は、公立学校にソフトウェアのプログラミングの授業を積極的に導入し、生徒に、授業カリキュラム内でコンピューターコードを書く機会を与えることを検討している。このニュースは、昨日の北京語版Good Morning Singaporeにて最初に報道された。

テクノロジー産業の性質の急速な変化を鑑みつつ、機関はシンガポールの経済力が多角的に世界トップレベルであり続けるように、プログラミングの授業が数カ月以内に国内で実施されることを望んでいる。

“Infocomm technology is getting to be more pervasive, and we all recognize that it’s going to be a strategic catalyst for [Singapore’s] competitive advantage,” said James Kang, assistant chief executive of the government chief information office at IDA.

To be sure, topics like programming and 3D printing are already available in some schools as extra-curricular activities with IDA’s help, so it’s unclear how these classes will differ from previous initiatives.

The agency has told Tech in Asia it is currently in exploratory talks with the Ministry of Education about how to introduce programming to students, so it does not know if the topic will become part of the curriculum or remain an extra-curricular activity.

「Infocommの技術はその普及力を強めつつあり、我々一同、それそのものが『シンガポールという国』の競争力を高める戦略のために重要な触媒となってきていることを実感しています。」と、IDA内 最高情報運営部のアシスタントチーフエグゼクティブであるJames Kang氏は言う。

実は、プログラミングや、3Dプリンティングといったテーマは、既にIDAの援助でいくつかの学校では課外授業として盛り込まれているので、これから導入予定のプログラミングの授業が、従来のものとどう違ってくるのかというのはよく分かっていない。

Starting with an idea and growing it into a viable company is a tall order. It requires a mixture of faith, determination, a little luck and a whole lot of positive attitude.

40歳からの企業：パート1

e27では、27歳での起業が主だと考えているが、Kluje社のJamey Merkel 氏はそこに異を唱える。「企業の精神は逞しいんですよ。年齢なんて関係ない。」と彼は言う。

企業をするには、信用、決心、運、そして企業に対する強い前向きな姿勢がいっぺんに求められる。最適といわれる時期でも、企業は難しい。頭に浮かんだアイデア一つだけで会社を立ち上げ、成り上がっていくのにも高い壁が立ちはだかる。そこには先述の信用、決心、運、そして企業に対する強い前向きな姿勢が共に備わってなければならないのだ。

Add to that the necessity to plan ten different things and begin executing them at the same time; all the while watching your bank balance go down, when you really want it to be going up, and you are beginning to get an inkling of what most entrepreneurs face. Well… not really. You’ll only truly understand when you do it yourself.

This is the first in a series of articles exploring entrepreneurship after the age of 40. Although there is a tonne of debate online, there really is only one answer: Age does matter, but not in the way you may think.

“Is there a peak age for entrepreneurship?” questions the research conducted by The Founder’s Institute. It states that older entrepreneurs are more likely to be successful. Why would that be? I think there are several plausible reasons, but lets start with some commonly cited ones I found:

The Founder’s Instituteは、「企業活動にピークの年齢は存在するのか」という問いかけに対し調査をしてきた。それによると、年配の起業家の方が成功しやすいという結果が出ている。なぜそうなるのだろうか？それには妥当な理由がいくつかあるのだろうが、まずは私が見出した、起業に関するいくつかの法則をここで紹介したい。

・Younger entrepreneurs have less bad habits to unlearn. True, but they also haven’t developed many good habits either. Experience does count.

・Young entrepreneurs have less to lose. But, nothing is more motivating than having a fire lit under you. With mortgage, debts and family, success becomes the only option.

・Young entrepreneurs are more ready to change the world and “see no boundaries, see no limits, see no obstacle that they can’t hurdle”. (Michael Moritz as quoted in Time) Again true. But neither did Napoleon when he attacked Russia at 43.

・若い起業家には、捨て去るべき悪習慣があまりない。そのとおりだ。だからといって、彼らはいい習慣をたくさん積み上げてきているわけでもない。経験の量は重要だ。

・若い起業家は、失うものが少ない。しかし、危機が迫らないとやる気が出ない。ローンや借金、家族のためとなると成功するしか道がなくなるのだ。

・若い起業家は、世界を変えてやろうと躍起で、「どんな境界も、限界点も、障害も乗り越えられると思っている。」（Time誌、Michael Moritz氏の発言より引用）　これも正しい。だけどナポレオンでさえ43歳でロシアに侵攻した時、失敗に終わっているのだ。

What I am trying to say is that as an older entrepreneur, with some life experience under my belt, I and others like me, are just as able to handle the startup life. In fact, we have some abilities that younger founders haven’t learned yet. According to an article, ‘Do Older Or Younger Entrepreneurs Have The Greater Advantage?‘ in the Forbes, one study of 5,000 startups in the US: 48 per cent of the startups had a founder 45 years old or older. However four years later, out of the surviving companies, 64 per cent had a founder 45 years old or older. Meaning the survival rate of startups with older founders is higher. Surprised? I wasn’t.

年配の起業家として、自分が培ってきた人生経験から私が言いたいのは、私や、私のような人々は単にスタートアップ人生をうまく乗りこなす力があっただけだということだ。実際、我々は若い起業家にはないような能力を備えている。Forbes誌掲載の、「有利なのは若年起業家か、年配か」という記事によると、アメリカのスタートアップ企業5000社を対象にした調査から、そのうち創設者が45歳もしくはそれ以上の時に起業したという会社が48％に上ることが明らかになった。しかしながら4年後には、生き残っている企業のうち、創設者が45歳以上であるのは64％になったという。つまり、年配の起業家が立ち上げるスタートアップ企業の方が生き残る確率が高いということだ。驚いただろうか？私は当然の結果だと思う。

As an older entrepreneur, I think our experience helps us in determining several key points in deciding to create a company.

・Defining the problem: As Steve Blank would say, ‘do you have a “hair on fire” problem or is it just “nice to have”?’ For example, when I decided to start kluje.com, I was first drawing on my experience as a homeowner, and trying to get a renovation done on my condo. As it turns out, I found other homeowners with the same frustrations.

・As more mature adults, we have had a bit more experience in the business world, especially with complex tasks which helps us better cope with the demands of being an entrepreneur.

年配の起業家の立場から、私は、起業までに培ってきた経験が会社を創設するためのいくつかのキーポイントを決めるのに役立つと考える。

・問題の明確化：Steve Blank氏の言葉を借りるならば、「あなたは『早急に解決すべき』問題を抱えているのか、それともそれはまぁ何とかなるのか？」たとえば、私がkluje.comを立ち上げる時、最初は住宅管理人としての経験を活かし、所有する分譲マンションの改築をしようとした。そして結果的に、他の住宅管理人も同様のフラストレーションを抱えていることに気付いたのだ。

・我々成熟した大人は、ビジネスの世界での経験という面で少しだけ有利だ。特に起業家になるにあたって、有事に対処することができるほどに複雑なタスクはこなしてきている。

At the moment, Roam & Wander has a team of 16 employees, and is working on a one-meter tall iPad-enabled plush rabbit. Children playing with TuTu can download Sticker Games, an app published by the same startup, to exchange their achievements for stickers sent to their doorstep. In addition, they can feed the rabbit with touch-enabled toy apples or milk cartons.

Warren said, “We’re hoping that kids will encounter TuTu first through Sticker Games. Then after they play games and win stickers, they will be more interested in taking care of TuTu.”

Shenzhen Incubated Wearable Device Startup Vigo Helps You Stay Alert and Fight Drowsiness

Vigo is a wearable device in the form of a Bluetooth headset that uses infrared to look at your eyes in order to determine signs of drowsiness, and nudges you when you are dozing off. It does so in one of three ways: a flashing light, a pulsing vibration in the ear, or a sound/alarm or pump-up song. It also shows your alertness levels throughout the day to help you understand your drowsiness patterns better and help you manage your routine. The device also gives recommendations on how to improve, like when to take a coffee break or when you’re most productive.

“We envision the technology to be used in applications ranging from driving (such as people who go on long road trips or people who get drowsy while driving), to students who tend to get drowsy in class, to office professionals. We are also exploring B2B opportunities such as professional drivers (such as truck and taxi drivers), security guards, machinery operators and night shift workers,” says Vigo co-founder Jason Gui, who is from Shenzhen.

Vigo was born out of a senior capstone project while the team members were engineering students at the University of Pennsylvania. The team worked on it as their capstone project, and received extremely positive feedback from professors and fellow students who had experienced similar problems. This led the team to pursue Vigo full-time and turn it into a commercially available product.

“We were thinking about what are some of the problems that we experience that we wanted to tackle, and unintentional drowsiness was a huge problem for us as students – whether we were in class or studying at the library, we would often get drowsy when we didn’t want to be, and didn’t know how we could manage our schedules better. So we built Vigo,”shares Jason.

Team

Jason studied mechanical engineering with a focus on mechatronics at Penn Engineering and business at the Wharton School, and looks at the electronics and technical side of things at Vigo. Drew Karabinos did mechanical engineering with a focus on product design, and at Vigo focuses on the design/user interaction as well as the overall vision and direction of the product. Jonathan Kern did mechanical engineering and economics, and focuses more on the business and operations side of things.

Moving to Shenzhen as part of HAXLR8R

The Vigo team moved to Shenzhen, China as part of the hardware accelerator HAXLR8R. HAXLR8R offers seed funding ($25,000), office space as well as mentorship along with the other opportunities for startups to take an idea to a product. The programme is based in Shenzhen in order to leverage the supply chain and factory ecosystem. They use a process they call ‘Interactive Manufacturing Process’ to ensure rapid development of manufacturable products.

HAXLR8R傘下に参入、深圳へ

Vigo製作チームは、中国・深圳拠点を移し、ハードウェアアクセラレータHAXLR8Rの傘下に参入した。HAXLR8Rは、チームに25,000US$のシードファンド、オフィス用スペース、そして新商品開発のスタートアップが必要になった場合のサポート体制を提供している。ただし、サプライチェーンと工場とのラインにてこを入れるため、深圳に拠点を置くのが条件というわけである。HAXLR8Rでは、工場製造商品における生産性の急速な向上を確かなものとするため、”相互製造プロセス”を用いているのだ。

“Shenzhen was amazing! We were part of the hardware accelerator HAXLR8R, a 4 month program in Shenzhen that put us right in the heart of the manufacturing capital of the world. We had access to an office space right in the midst of Huaqiangbei (华强北), the electronics market, equipment to build and rapid prototype, a wealth of mentors, networks and workshops to help us succeed, as well as tours and introductions to factories and the manufacturing scene. It was a very immersive program that really allowed us to understand manufacturing better so that we could better design our product to be ready for manufacturing,” adds Jason.

“We will definitely be utilizing China’s manufacturing resources now that we have built these relationships with suppliers and manufacturers and can utilize their expertise. Being in China was also fun – I’m personally from Shenzhen, China actually (I’m an international student who went to college in the US), while my two co-founders were in Asia for the first time, so it was a unique experience for me to introduce them to Chinese culture, including interesting food like chicken feet and duck tongues!”

Funding and Future Plans: “We’re seeking seed investors”

Right now the startup is raising funds on Kickstarter in order to go into production. They are also running a campaign on Demohour, a Chinese crowd-funding platform, so that people in China can support them. They decided to showcase their product on Demohour as people in China can only browse products on Kickstarter but are unable to support projects because of the lack of access and limitations to use of local credit cards/China Unionpay/Alipay.

The startup will be selling the device at $79.

このスタートアップ企業は、79US$で商品を販売する予定である。
