Throughout the course of Alkaline Trio’s 15-plus years of making music, the band have taken a surprising amount of risks, incorporating different production techniques, synths and myriad takes on songwriting, regardless of the finished product.Basically, they’ve never been afraid to make a bad record.But with My Shame Is True, they’ve done something much worse: They made a boring record.The album starts off strong with the fun, loose, straightforward “She Lied To The FBI,” and the fast-paced “I Wanna Be A Warhol” has a great chorus—but not much else.Shame then settles into a repetitious rut.

Many of Matt Skiba’s vocal melodies are repeated wholesale from previous Trio records (“Midnight Blue”), and his lyrics have become near-parodies at this point (“Until Death Do Us Part”).Thank heaven for Dan Andriano, who contributes four great tracks, including the positively pissed off “I, Pessimist” (featuring Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath) and the accusatory, bitter “I’m Only Here To Disappoint”—a reminder the bassist/vocalist can still write hate songs as good as his love songs.As for Skiba, though, it seems like he’s saving his best material for his various side projects.As such, My Shame Is True winds up feeling like white noise more than anything else.

Each track is built around a boyish, well-scrubbed chorus any mother (or any A Day To Remember fan) could love, but those candy-sweet moments are coated in dense, constantly-shifting arrangements.Producer Joey Sturgis rotates expected elements—blast beats, livewire riffing and the obligatory death growls—as well as lighter touches, like the lo-fi drum loop that opens “Taking Chances” and the keyboard coda of “Miles And Decibels,” creating a mix that demands constant attention.It’s an exhilarating stop-start ride, but it’s also worth noting that the most straightforward and subdued song—the yearning “So Close And Yet So Far”—might be C!NCC!’s best yet.

It’s not a huge secret regarding what Paramore went through in the past few years: The Farro brothers, guitarist Josh and drummer Zac, quit the band in 2010, taking with them the primary source of Paramore’s songwriting.An intense creative rebuilding period followed, eventually resulting in what you hear onParamore, the band’s fourth album, a sprawling, 17-song, 64-minute monster that is without a doubt the finest music these three artists—vocalist Hayley Williams, guitarist Taylor York and bassist Jeremy Davis—have ever made.The album begins with “Fast In My Car,” a sultry electro-rock number with a strong ’90s guitar-rock vibe—a feeling that pops up repeatedly on Paramore.
