How Xiaomi is trying to push all the right buttons in Indonesia (#StartupAsia preview)

Xiaomi arrived at the right time in China, just as smartphones became commonplace and Chinese people sought out cheaper alternatives to products from HTC, Samsung, and Apple. That’s part of the reason why it’s now selling tens of millions of phones a year in China. Now Xiaomi is trying to replicate the same feat in several emerging markets where feature phones are finally dying out and cheap smartphones are in demand.

Xiaomi launched in Indonesia in August. Rather than selling its whole line-up, Xiaomi is focusing on the lower end of the Indonesian market by focusing on the Redmi 1S (pictured below), selling it for the equivalent of US$120.

What’s next for Xiaomi in Indonesia and across Southeast Asia? Hugo Barra, Xiaomi’s VP of international, will be onstage at Startup Asia Jakarta 2014 on day two of our event, talking about how Xiaomi is trying to push all the right buttons in Indonesia.

Xiaomi got red-flagged over two months ago, when a software security monitoring firm, F-Secure, tested the Redmi 1s just before its launch in India, and reported that it was passing phone numbers, contact lists, messages, and device identification codes to Xiaomi’s servers in China. This set off ripples on social media, especially after the Indian Air Force, no less, said the phones were a security threat in a circular.

But Xiaomi is also going to the root of the issue – the servers. It has been migrating its services and data for users outside China from data centers in Beijing to Amazon AWS data centers in Singapore and the USA. Hugo Barra, Xiaomi vice-president, says in a Google Plus post that the migration will be completed by the end of 2014. And next year, Xiaomi plans to have a local data center in India, where it already has a research and development center.

“These efforts help significantly improve the performance of our services and also provide some peace of mind for users in India,” says Hugo Barra.

But the Indian Air Force still has the Chinese phone-maker in its sights, and there is no sign of any let-up. Just last week, it asked all its personnel to ensure neither they nor any of their family members use a Xiaomi phone.

Xiaomi is at its wit’s end. “We are attempting to reach the Indian authorities to learn the specifics,” it says in a statement, adding that the IAF circular apparently related to the F-Secure test done months earlier, which had already been addressed.

Jack vs Jeff: The two biggest ecommerce billionaires in the world are total opposites

In 1990, Jack Ma was teaching English to a group of university students at Hangzhou Dianzi University. Who would have thought that, 24 years later, he would be China’s richest man?

In that same year, Jeff Bezos was working at D.E. Shaw & Co., an investment management firm based out of New York City. After graduating summa cum laude from Princeton university with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science and electrical engineering, there was no doubt Bezos would end up in tech, it was just a matter of time.

These origin stories are tell-tale signs of two diverging philosophies and the companies they gave birth to. And yet they meet in some inroads. Just one month after Alibaba’s IPO, let’s take a deeper look at the two founders and the companies that are destined to shape the future of online retail.

A glaring example from this summer was the surprise loss of Representative Eric Cantor, one of the most powerful politicians in America, in a primary election. The story was the leading news item on SmartNews at first but, a few hours later, a profile piece on his rival took center stage. Jaroslovsky corrected the ranking to put the story on Cantor’s loss back on top. For him, that was the real news of the day, the other story was important but as a supplemental piece.

The SmartNews algorithm might know how to determine what people need to read but it still requires Jarovlesky’s input to craft a proper news cycle. A program that can perform automated news collation and news cycle design seems like a prime candidate to eat real life jobs.

Jaroslovsky, who still remembers the “wrenching” transition from print to media, thinks differently. “Publisher after publisher we’ve talked to has said that this year is the tipping point [to mobile from desktop],” he says, adding that most publishers are scrambling to survive the coming changes. Not wanting to see the industry go through the same upheaval all over again is one of the reasons he joined the SmartNews team.

Alibaba joins hands with Australia’s Bigcommerce to lure in more merchants globally

If you earn a living off of your own online web store, Alibaba wants your business. The Chinese ecommerce behemoth is partnering with Bigcommerce, a service provider for online retailers, to help international web vendors source products from Alibaba.com, the company’s flagship business-to-business marketplace.

Alibaba’s consumer-facing ecommerce business remains largely focused on mainland China, with some key exceptions. Its AliExpress SMB-to-consumer site is popular in Russia and Brazil, and it owns a new California-based marketplace called 11 Main. But standalone online vendors who use services like Bigcommerce, Shopify, and Squarespace are growing more commonplace in North America and Europe. These players provide the Chinese giant with another channel through which it can expand outwards.

To learn more about the potential impact of an active Alibaba, Tech in Asia reached out to Melissa Guzy, founder of Arbor Ventures and Vinnie Lauria, founder of Golden Gate Ventures, both of whom are very active in Southeast Asia. Here is what they had to say.

How will Alibaba’s IPO influence the startup scene in Asia?

MG: Success breeds success and of course the record-setting IPO valuation has made an impression on young entrepreneurs and has shown them the value of stock from years of hard work.

VL: Quite positively, as it brings more attention to the region, especially being the largest IPO in history, it’s going to make many more US and global investors look at this region.

MG: Alibaba is already investing aggressively outside of China and will likely continue to do so especially with a large war chest. It can afford to acquire leading edge technology and global engineering talent.

VL: I’d imagine in other parts of Southeast Asia it will take a mix of competitive approach, and also an M&A approach for land grabs – this is good opportunity for healthy exits for some startups. Outside of Asia, I think they’ll be able to continue an independent approach to create B2B value to allow Chinese merchants to connect with a global audience.

In which Southeast Asian market is Alibaba most likely to succeed? Least likely?

MG: It will depend upon which market segments in which local partners. There are few markets in SEA that are large enough to be stand alone and it requires significant effort. The largest single market is Indonesia and hard to ignore for a company like Alibaba.

Are there any relevant lessons from Rakuten’s attempted global expansion that Alibaba can learn?

MG: I think that Rakuten has learned that cultural differences matter and localization is important, which is the same lesson that the US Internet companies learned when they entered China.

VL: Work with local payments providers – don’t try to do it yourself. Buy larger global players that can help with distribution, partnerships, and customer access like Viber, Ebates, etc.

How urgent a need does Alibaba have to expand in the first place? Why cannot it not just stay in China?

MG: Alibaba can grow in China for many years as more and more people enter the middle class. It has global ambitions, which is no different to Google and Facebook and is very popular in Southeast Asia.

そもそも、Alibabaの拡大は、どれくらい急を要していることなのでしょうか？なぜ、同社は中国にとどまり続けてはいけないのでしょうか？

MG: Alibabaは、中国人の中間所得層が更に増えるにつれ、中国においてこれから何年も成長し続ける事ができます。同社はグローバル化の野心があり、これはGoogleやFacebookとなんら変わるものではなく、東南アジアではとてもよく見られることです。
