After Singles Day, Alibaba delivered 40 million packages in 3 days

Before Singles Day, we laid out four things to watch for to measure Alibaba’s success. One of them was whether the company broke US$9 billion in sales. It did. Another was whether it could deliver on promises to ship quickly thanks to its recent additions in logistics and delivery. The answer to that question is less clear.

Alibaba’s delivery subsidiary Cainiao reports that in the three days following Singles Day, it delivered more than 40 million packages. But while that may seem like a lot, Cainiao says that Tmall’s Singles Day sales generated about 278 million delivery orders. Delivering 40 million packages in three days represents just 14 percent of the total deliveries required. Most customers had to wait longer than that (though to be fair to Alibaba, probably not much longer).

The ecommerce titan explains Alipay Australia will work with a joint venture partner called Paybang “to continue serving local businesses targeting China’s booming consumer base and facilitating cross-border trade between the two countries.”

China and Australia earlier this week signed a major free trade agreement worth billions of dollars, removing tarriffs from Australian agricultural goods exported to the mainland. That agreement, however, will not take effect until after 2015.

Tencent Driving Sogou’s Mobile Search Traffic Growth

Mobile search for Sogou, the Chinese input method and search service provider of Sohu, saw 20% growth in traffic and a 40% rise in revenue in the third quarter of 2014, largely driven by Tencent products, especially the QQ mobile browser.

Currently Sogou’s mobile search traffic comes from two traffic sources: Tencent’s products with Sogou Search as the default option and the Sogou Search app. The Cost Per Click (CPC) on mobile is 40% of that on PC, according to the company.

WeChat launches MojiMe; wants to put your face on emoji stickers

MojiMe blurs the lines between selfies and emojis (or stickers), but will it catch on? Tencent is betting yes

WeChat today launched what it hopes will become the ‘newest social craze’ — its customised and animated emojis (or stickers) app MojiMe, which allows users to insert their face into a selection of cute emojis and then share with friends on WeChat.

The Tencent-owned messaging platform is trying to differentiate itself in the growingly populated selfie and stickers app landscape.

Being a Chinese company, Tencent will be well aware of the popularity of emoji stickers in Asia. But the release is also a nod at competition in the selfie space: ‘move over selfies’, its statement reads.

MojiMe is available on both iOS and Android in Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, South Africa, Italy and China at the time of launch.
