However, Chinese operator seems to take it amazingly well by adapting to the trends rather than stifling those services. China Unicom launched its free-text messaging service Wo You (沃友) couple weeks ago. Now it’s China Mobile’s turn with Feiliao. At present we have little knowledge regarding how much effort China Mobile will put into Feiliao nor do we know how determined China Mobile is to operate the service if by any chance it gets so popular that might even threaten its SMS business which is very profitable. Maybe let’s just wait and see if operator will kill SMS on its own, though this will be the most unlikely case for China Mobile or any operators.

Red Alert! Tencent Joins Android App Stores Competition

Lacking of paid apps and additional business models, and facing a tough competition from tens of similar services, as we predicted back in April, most Chinese independent Android app stores will have a hard time sooner or later. GFan is the only one we heard recently raised $5 millions and the others such as NDuoa (early invested by Shanda), eoeMarket etc we don’t even know what they are working on. And we even heard that one popular Android app store has been acquired by a giant at a cheap price (as it’s running out of money). Unfortunately, now the situation is even getting worse, the super giant, Tencent, just released its own Android App Store.

As always, Tencent is very good at the products. Its app store, named Tencent App Center has a nice UI and the user experience is good too. And Tencent is also very smart, unlike other app stores, its App Store comes with friends sharing and commenting feature. In other words, if you log into the app center with your QQ account, you would be able to see what apps have been downloaded by your QQ contacts, and their comments on those apps. You can also rank the app, share it on QQ, email or SMS. The idea is similar to FrienzApp, Chomp, AppGroovs etc but the obviously difference is that Tencent App Center has a hundreds of millions of QQ users already standing by.

What’s popular on Google+? Find out on Journal+

Journal+, a website that gathers popular posts from Google+, was released by User Local last week. It’s a web magazine that brings together popular pictures, videos, and news articles on Google+ by various categories, or by country.

Taking a quick look at Journal+, users can get a snapshot of what’s most popular on Google+. The number of times a post has been reshared, and the amount of +1s it has received, are some of the factors that decide what is displayed on the site. There are more than 6.2 million posts on Journal+ right now, and it has already acquired more than 4.2 million users.

Journal+ is a good way to get raw G+ stats too. They reveal that in terms of the number of Google+ users, Japan is placed 8th in the world – but the number of posts emanating from Japan sees it ranked 2nd in the world. It can be said that Google+ is taking off pretty well in Japan.

User Local is a technology development venture company located within Waseda University that provides analytics tools. Its products include User Insight which is a heat maps-based tool, and TwitTraq which provides twitter analytics.

I am a fan of the Nikkei; I read it every single day. But this smartphone theory makes me skeptical. After all, Japan has arguably the most advanced mobile environment in the world, with 3G Internet use on phones for the last ten years. Surely online shopping was prevalent before the recent introduction of smartphones. It turns out it was.

According to a survey by Net Asia (Japanese) in January of this year 57.5 percent of mobile users have experience shopping online via their phones. There is certainly still room for growth but the experience is not novel to the smartphone.

Innovation Works Closes First Internet-Focused Fund of US$180 Million

With uncertainty and shaky financial figures being constantly reported from America and Europe, it seems the world’s beacon of hope is Asia and more specifically the second biggest economy in the world, China.

This new global power shift has seen nearly every company from every country trying to get a foothold in the lucrative China market. With endless reports of giant foreign companies failing to culturally adapt to China and consequentially dying, with the obvious current example of Groupon; smarter people are learning to partner up with people who know China best.

Arguably even the most famous incubator, Y Combinator would likely have trouble establishing itself in China.

Today, Innovation Work’s, the most powerful early-stage high tech investment incubator in China has raised a big new US$180 million fund. Some of the heavy weight investors include Yuri Milner and Ron Conway. Milner of DST has famously shaken things up in the investment world after pumping a lot of money into Facebook, Zynga and Groupon. Conway as a Super Angel, with investments in Google, Paypal and Twitter is personally investing in Innovation Works. The rock star investor said, “Over the years, I have helped numerous companies in the United States from their founding.

So what does it mean for Facebook in Asia? Nothing much, at least for now. Kleinberg can’t reveal anything until F8, Facebook’s upcoming developer conference on September 22nd in San Francisco is over. But it’s likely that the team in Singapore will play an important role in catalyzing Facebook’s growth in Asia. I wonder if Facebook’s long-rumored expansion to China will be part of his plan?

He seems like a nice guy who could really transform Facebook Singapore (and, by extension, its Facebook-in-Asia mandate) into an APAC stronghold. We’ll get in touch with him again once F8 is over. However, the story behind it might be more complex than we thought. A VP of Dianping (the leading Chinese Yelp) commented on the weibo saying, the true reason caused the split is that 360buy is not happy with Alipay’s keeping the record of all 360buy’s customer data, according to his insider friends.

Also today, on 360buy’s payment methods page, UnionPay has taken place of Alipay and becomes the top recommended payment method. Furthermore, 360buy will also widely adopt UnionPay’s MicroSD Card mobile payment solution for its mobile eCommerce strategy.

We reported back in May that 360buy had removed Alipay, the no.1 online payment solution from its payment methods. No one really knows what’s going on there since then. But yesterday, in Chengdu, at the same place APEC SME Summit 2011 (I was there attending) was held, 360buy together with UnionPay, the national bankcard association in China, announced their strategic partnership on online payment as well as mobile payment solution. We broke the news on weibo and the tweet has been retweeted ~650 times and commented ~140 within several hours. It’s probably for the first time, a leading Chinese eCommerce site said NO to Alipay.
