In addition to the more impressive constructive aspects of the life review, certain adaptive and defensive aspects may be noted. Some of the aged have illusions of the “good past”; some fantasy the past rather than the future in the service of avoiding the realities of the present; some maintain a characteristic detachment from others and themselves. Although these mechanisms are not constructive, they do assist in maintaining a status quo of psychological functioning.

Upon my request he sent me the tapes he had made, and wrote: “These is the first reel of tape on which I recorded my memory of my life store. To give this some additional interest I am expecting that my children and grandchildren and great-grand-children will listen to it after I am gone. I pretended that I was telling the story directly to them.”

Another manifestation of the life review seems to be the curious but apparently common phenomenon of mirror-gazing, illustrated by the following:
I was passing by my mirror. I noticed how old I was. My appearance, well, it prompted me to think of death-and of my past-what I hadn’t done, what I had done wrong.
One hospitalized 80-year-old woman, whose husband had died five years before her admission, had been discovered by her family berating her mirror image for her past deeds and shaking her fist at herself.

In 1995 and 2005, respondents were instructed to rate each feeling according to how descriptive the item was for them using a 3-point scale(1 = not at all descriptive, 2= somewhat descriptive, 3= very descriptive). Identity certainty included items like "feeling secure and committed" and "a sense of being my own person." Confident power was assessed with items like "not holding back when I have something to offer" and "feeling respected." Concern about aging included items like "looking old" and "thinking a lot about death." Finally, concerns with generativity involved items like "effort to ensure that younger people get their chance to develop" and "wanting to make changes in society."

Twenty of these adjectives were grouped together a priori into four superordinate trait clusters. The first cluster was developed to assess the tender and loving qualities of a partner. The following five adjectives were used: compassionate, friendly, gentle, warm, and unterstanding (Cronbach's α= .77). The second cluster assessed stereotyped masculinity with the following items: aggressive, ambitious, clear-thinking, intelligent, and realistic (Cronbach's α= .69). Stability in partners was rated by summing responses for conscientious, reliable, responsible, reckles (reverse scored), and unpredictable (reverse scored; Cronbach's α= .71).

Bill E. peterson scored all of the open-ended responses to the motherhood questions. Once again Lauren E. Duncan also scored the responses of 15 participants. Category agreement across the motherhood themes was 86%.
In 2005, participants were asked to rate their current partners on each of 30 adjectives according to the following scale: 1= hardly like the adjective to 5 = a lot like the adjective.
