They will scout and invite five start-ups to present at APMF 2012. When asked about why this session was added to the forum, Kevin Mintaraga, the head of selection committee, answered:

It is because more of advertisers spend more and more dollars in the digital space. The annual growth of ad-spend in digital is growing significantly compared to other media. Moreover, clients/advertisers see an added value on pushing their digital creativity by using new channels. We are very excited to host this session and to give the stage to these new startups for five minutes each to present their capabilities and to spark brand engagement ideas.

The requirement for the startup to be accepted by the committee is that it has to be a company that has already launched, has a good advertising platform, and can reach certain a target market. The startup will be given a free entry to the event and they are going to receive regional exposure among CMOs, marketing directors and managers, agencies (digital, media, advertising) and a lot of key decision makers for digital ad spending.

Android Doubles Its Market Share in China, Symbian Still Ahead of iOS

New stats from Beijing-based Analysys International show that Google’s mobile OS, Android, doubled its market share in China in the past year, rising to account for 68.4 percent of smartphone sales by the end of 2011. Unless it’s close to reaching the plateau, it could well be the OS of choice for more than three-quarters of Chinese smartphone buyers very soon. Apple’s iOS, in contrast, appears to have gained and then lost some of its territory throughout the last year, ending it with 5.7 percent.

Symbian – which covers a lot of devices that are really just erroneously marketed feature-phones – saw its sales share fall off a cliff over the same period, and is still in free-fall at 18.7 percent. It’ll almost certainly be in single digits by the end of the year, going in parallel with Nokia’s disastrous decline in China. Here’s the graph for the whole of 2011:

Interestingly, this chimes in very well with web usage stats we looked at previously which showed that twice as many Android phones as iPhones were being observed browsing the web in China. And now with actual sales stats as well, we can see that the variety of Android devices at all kinds of price points has been a key to its success, giving Chinese consumers access to the world of apps and Angry Birds for as little as 1,000 RMB ($158) – way below the 4,999 RMB price-point of Apple’s iPhone.

Also note that Microsoft’s newest Windows Phone is not represented in the graph, having only officially launched in China just last month.

Not an Infrastructure Problem: China Unicom,Telecom Say Internet Issues Not on Their End

Yesterday, China’s internet briefly became an intranet. Most users inside the country couldn’t access any pages hosted abroad, and net users worldwide lost access to Chinese sites. It had been theorized that this was an issue with China Telecom’s internet intfrastructure, or that it was related to the recent earthquake in Southeast Asia. But now both Telecom and Unicom have officially denied that the issues were caused by infrastructure problems on their ends. Both companies say that during the outage there seemed to be nothing technically wrong with their networks, and they aren’t sure what caused the problem.

Unicom officials said the company’s internet reports showed the earthquake had not interfered with underwater cables that help connect China’s internet to the outside world. An expert at Telecom echoed that the problem was not with its network. This is significant because all Chinese internet traffic must be routed through Telecom or Unicom’s network infrastructure to get overseas.

In addition to next week’s launch, China Mobile has said it will make available data roaming services for both 3G and 4G for customers when they travel to mainland China. It’ll be available only with an additional monthly fee, and seems aimed at businesspeople who work a lot in the mainland.

Just yesterday we looked at a report which found that only 10 mobile telcos across Asia had fully rolled out 4G services. We can now bump that number up to 11. PCCW (HKG:0008) will do likewise in Hong Kong later this year.

eBay has concluded their internal marketing test to remove cash-back for eBay purchases at Mr. Rebates which lasted from 6/15/11 through 9/30/11. We were told that eBay would return at a later date in October of 2011 but unfortunately that has not happened.
We are in contact with eBay but do not have any further information about if and/or when they will return to Mr. Rebates. We do hope to see eBay back on Mr. Rebates and encourage you to contact eBay to let them know how important cash back is to you in your daily buying decisions.
