Youku
Alibaba continued its video rampage by ploughing US$1.22 billion into video portal Youku Tudou (NYSE:YOKU), backed by Jack Ma’s Yunfeng Capital. Youku is China’s top video streaming site.

The two companies are collaborating to share each others’ user data to better target customers. Alibaba and Youku are working on a service to allow individual shops on Taobao and Tmall to place advertisements on Youku videos.

Alibaba’s Jack Ma versus Xiaomi’s Lei Jun: who is really Asia’s richest man?

In September, Jack Ma was crowned China’s richest person after his company Alibaba set the record for the world’s biggest IPO. And just last week, many deemed him the richest man in Asia, surpassing property tycoon Li Ka-shing.

But yesterday, a US$200 million investment into appliance manufacturer Midea by smartphone maker Xiaomi revealed some new numbers that might make the analysts reconsider. As it turns out, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun owns a whopping 77.8 percent of his company – way more than Jack Ma owns of Alibaba at just 6.3 percent.

Tencent, PPTV, and more in trouble with authorities for “hyping vulgar content”

Eight internet technology companies, including Tencent, Sina News, Phoenix News, Ku6, PPTV, and 17173, have been found guilty of promoting vulgar and lowbrow content, reports China’s state-run television network CCTV. The report specifically cites low-on-meaning, high-on-titillation examples like Tencent’s ‘Hot and Sexy Photos’ column, and other similarly sex-focused attempts at grabbing eyeballs.

According to the CCTV report, the State Information Office has instructed local branches in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong, to “seriously investigate” the companies. Authorities have already spoken to the offending companies about their failure to follow the law, and some – perhaps all – of the offending content has been removed.

For example, China’s biggest gaming site 17173 made the list of offenders for operating a subsite at 818.17173.com that had nothing to do with video games, and instead was simply a frequently-updated collection of sexy photos. Visit that URL today, though, and you’ll find yourself redirected to 17173’s main site.

The CCTV report and the investigations of the eight internet companies are part of a 2014 “anti-pornography” campaign. China’s government undertakes these campaigns with some regularity in an attempt to keep its corner of the internet free from actual pornography, overly sexually suggestive imagery, and politically sensitive material. Beyond the closing of the offending columns and services, it’s unlikely that any of the companies named will be more severely published.

In its present form, KTplay has more features than Apple’s Game Center or Google Play Games, but it doesn’t include any ecommerce elements, despite the Alibaba connection. However, that could change. Alibaba representative Rachel Chan explains:

We are open to explore cooperation between KTplay and our other businesses including Alimama for advertising/marketing, cloud computing, and Alipay for payment services.

Alibaba has tinkered with games before, including distributing apps and games on its Taobao shopping marketplace. The company also invested US$120 million into US-based Kabam a few months ago.

現在ではKTplayはAppleのGame CenterやGoogle Play Gamesよりも多くの特長を備えているが、Alibaba との接続を除けば、eコマースの要素は一つもない。しかしそれは変えようと思えば変えられる。AlibabaのRachel Chan氏はこう説明する。

Fong adds that “in the future, [KTplay can] merge the worlds of ecommerce and marketplaces and gaming,” and that it has “lots of potential” in this area when allied with Alibaba’s Alipay.

At present, most gamers who trade or sell their in-app items do so offline. Fong foresees that the new platform could expand into a sort of “gaming marketplace” for those transactions.

Alibaba versus Tencent – round 9

This social gaming venture is a new battlefront in the ever-expanding war between Alibaba and Tencent, China’s two biggest web titans.

On the one hand, this move may be coming a little late. Puzzle & Dragons was white hot in 2013, but since then its growth has slowed. In fact, it was just dethroned as Japan’s top mobile game and its top-grossing mobile game by a newer game called Monster Strike, published by Mixi. By the time Puzzle & Dragons launches in China in 2015, the game’s popularity may well have sunk even lower.

And because Puzzle & Dragons was popular abroad but unavailable in China for so long, plenty of copycat games sprung up to fill the void. Chinese gamers interested in Puzzle & Dragons may not have been able to play the real thing yet, but they’ve had plenty of time to experience – and maybe even get tired of – the game’s signature gameplay via any of the many copycat titles that mimic it.

On the other hand, it’s certainly possible. Puzzle & Dragons was one of the most popular and profitable mobile games in the history of Japan, and it did quite well in the United States too. Tencent has a history of successfully importing popular foreign games – even older ones. In fact, China’s top 3 PC games are all foreign imports published in China by Tencent, and all of them are more than five years old. Tencent is a company that has proved itself good at spotting overseas success and duplicating that success in the Chinese gaming market. Even at times when it seems like it has arrived at the party a little late.

一方、Puzzle & Dragonsが中国で大ヒットする可能性もある。Puzzle & Dragonsは日本のゲーム市場もっとも人気を博し、利益を上げたゲームの一つだった。アメリカでも好成績を上げた。Tencentは人気のある海外のゲームを輸入して成功してきた実績がある。そのゲームがたとえ古いものであっても、だ。実際、中国のパソコンゲームのトップ3は、3つともすべてTencentが海外から輸入し、中国で発表したゲームである。またその3つともが5年以上前のものなのである。Tencentは海外でヒットしたゲームを目ざとく見つけ、そのゲームを中国のゲーム市場でもヒットさせることが得意なところを見せてきた。たとえパーティーにほんの少し遅れてやって来たように思えるときでも、その力は変わらないのだ。

So, Puzzle & Dragons‘ move to the Middle Kingdom may not be quite as sure a thing as some pundits are suggesting. That doesn’t mean I’d bet against it, though. 2015 may be a little late for Puzzle & Dragons to finally reach China’s shores, but this time I suspect it will be a case of better late than never.

というわけでPuzzle & Dragonsが中国で成功できるかどうかは一部の評論家たちが言うようにはっきりしたものではないかもしれない。だが、成功しないほうに賭けると言うつもりはない。2015年というのはPuzzle & Dragonsがようやく中国の岸辺にたどりつくにはやや遅いのかもしれないが、今回に関しては「遅れても来ないよりはまし」のケースではないかと思っている。

Can Alibaba compete with Tencent when it comes to games?

Yesterday, Alibaba revealed its latest move towards the gaming space: a new social mobile gaming platform called KTplay. Created together with Beijing-based mobile game startup Yodo1, KTplay is a bit like a more robust version of Apple’s Game Center. But that’s not the only move Alibaba has made recently in the gaming space. In August, the company poured $120 million into American game developer Kabam, and it has also experimented with using its ecommerce sites as a platform for game distribution.

AlibabaはゲームでTencentに張り合うことができるか？

昨日、Alibabaはゲーム業界への最新の動きを明らかにした。KTplayと呼ばれる携帯向けの新しいソーシャル・ゲームのプラットフォームだ。北京に本社を置く新しい携帯ゲーム会社、Yodo1と共同で開発されたKTplayはApple のGame Centerをさらに頑強にしたようなものだ。だがAlibabaのゲーム業界における最近の動きはこれだけではない。8月にはAlibabaは1億2千万米ドルをアメリカのゲーム開発会社Kabamにつぎ込み、Kabamのeコマースサイトをゲーム配信のプラットフォームとして利用するという手段を試した。

All of this begs the question: how far can Alibaba go with games? It’s an entirely different market, after all, but Alibaba does have extremely deep pockets and a history of success. Could Alibaba, some have asked, even be the company that can finally challenge Tencent‘s gaming dominance in the Middle Kingdom?

The first time someone asked me that question, I laughed because I genuinely thought they were joking. Alibaba is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to ecommerce, but Alibaba overtake Tencent in games? That’s virtually impossible.

こういった動きから疑問が生じる。Alibabaはいったいどこまでゲーム分野に進出できるだろうか。結局のところ、ゲーム分野は全く分野の異なる市場なのだから。しかしAlibabaには非常に潤沢な資金があり、これまで成功してきた実績もある。一部には、Alibabaは中国におけるTencentのゲーム分野の支配にようやく挑戦できるだけの企業になりえるのだろうかと問う者もいる。

最初にそう聞かれた際、私はてっきり冗談だと思い、一笑に付した。Alibabaはeコマースに関しては侮れない勢力であるが、Alibabaがゲーム分野でTencentを追い抜く？　そんなことは不可能である。

Total domination

To understand why Alibaba’s not overtaking Tencent, you need to understand the kind of stranglehold Tencent has on China’s games market. In PC games, Tencent publishes China’s three most popular PC games: League of Legends, Crossfire, and Dungeon & Fighter. It has plenty of other hit games, too, but Tencent has held those top three spots for years now. That’s a huge deal in a country where revenues from PC gaming are far and away the biggest piece of the overall gaming pie.

なぜAlibabaがTencentを追い抜くことができないかを理解するためには、Tencentが中国でのゲーム市場にがっちりと食い込んでいることを理解する必要がある。PCゲームにおいてはTencentは中国で最も人気のあるPCゲームを3つ発売している。League of Legends、Crossfire、Dungeon & Fighterである。PCゲームにはほかにもたくさんのヒットがあるが、Tencentはもう何年にもわたってトップ3を占めている。つまり、PCゲームによる収益がゲーム分野全体の中でとてつもなく大きな部分を占める国においては、莫大な収益となることを意味する。

But even if we give Alibaba a free pass on PC games and assume the company is only interested in the much smaller Chinese mobile games market, it would still have a mountain to climb to beat Tencent. Android gaming data is hard to track because of the many different third-party app stores, but just yesterday Apple released its list of the top-grossing iOS apps in China in 2014, and guess what: 13 of the top 20 were Tencent games. Yes, nearly 75% of China’s top 20 top-grossing iOS apps were Tencent games. That’s crazy.

だが仮にパソコンゲームにおけるTencentの支配は別として、Alibabaはパソコンゲーム市場よりずっと小さな中国のモバイルゲーム市場にしか興味がないと考えるにしても、Tencentを打ち負かすにはまだ越えねばならない大きな山がある。Androidのゲームデータはさまざまなアプリストアが存在するために拾うのが難しい。だが昨日、Appleは2014年の中国におけるiOSアプリの売り上げ上位リストを発表した。結果はどうだっただろうか。トップ20のうち、13がTencentのゲームだったのだ。中国のiOSアプリの売り上げトップ20のほぼ75％がTencentのゲームだったのである。すごいことだ。

Technically speaking, it’s not impossible. But it’s definitely not happening anytime soon. Alibaba is a massive company and it has a big war chest it can bring to bear on whatever market it wants. But Tencent has a big war chest too, and in the Chinese gaming market, it is both strong and entrenched. Whether you love or hate the penguin, get used to it, because it’s not going anywhere.

厳密に言えば不可能ではない。だがすぐに起こることはまずない。Alibabaは巨大企業であり、どんな市場であれ、自分がほしいと思った市場につぎ込むことのできる資金を潤沢に持ち合わせている。だがTencentもまた、資金は豊富であり、中国ゲーム市場において強大な力を誇り、地位を確立している。マフラーを巻いたペンギンを好むと好まざるにかかわらず、その存在に慣れなければならない。このペンギンはどこにも行かないのだから。

Luck is not a factor

Of course, there are those who would argue that Alibaba could still beat Tencent with the help of a little luck. Invest in the right game that happens to go big and you can go from a bit player to a big shot virtually overnight, especially in mobile games. But as Tencent’s results indicate, the company has essentially figured out a way to account for luck, by either buying or copying success.

ツキは関係ない

もちろん、ちょっとしたツキがあればAlibabaもTencentを打ち負かすことができると言う者もいるだろう。たまたま大化けするゲームに投資すれば、事実上一夜にして小物から大物になることができる。モバイルゲームの世界では特にそうだ。だがTencentの実績が示すように、同社は基本的にツキを作る方法を見つけている。つまり買収や成功事例をまねることだ。

What would it take?

To compete with Tencent, Alibaba would need to pour a truly massive amount of money into gaming. It would need to acquire a lot of talented development studios, both foreign and domestic, and it would need to get interested in PC gaming. It would need to create social platforms that could rival Tencent’s to promote and integrate its games into. And it would need to find some way to unseat Tencent’s popular chart-topping games, even though in some cases they’re games that have been consistently popular in China for nearly a decade.

Tencentと張り合うには、Alibabaは非常に大量の資金をゲーム分野につぎ込む必要があるだろう。国内外を問わず、才能のある開発スタジオを大量に獲得する必要があるし、パソコンゲーム市場にも関心を持たなければならない。自社のゲームを宣伝し、組み入れるために、Tencentのものに匹敵するソーシャルプラットフォームを開発する必要がある。それに、売り上げ上位を占めるTencentの人気ゲームの座を何とかして奪う方法を見つけねばならない。それがたとえほぼ10年にわたって中国で根強い人気を博してきたゲームであってもだ。

Entering into either giant regional free trade agreement will inevitably undermine the global, multilateral trading system as Japan, the U.S. and the EU have all benefited from the World Trade Organization.
