Many others cite privacy as their biggest reason to stay active on Path. While the obvious response to that is an advice to share more responsibly on Facebook and be more aware of Facebook’s privacy options, there is no such option on Path. Either you share or you don’t and if you share, everybody who are your friends can see them. You decide who your closest friends are and you don’t even have to use up all 150 slots.

I asked a few of my friends from four different professions for a layman’s take on Blackberry and BBM. They’ve got some insights on how important BBM has become integral in their life and work, and yet how frustrated they are about it.

BBM at work

Blackberry is well known as the phone for enterprise and it is very true here in Indonesia.

・A lot of Blackberry users are not satisfied with their phones. For example, my online merchant friend regularly resets his Blackberry phone twice a day, and my other friend’s phone crashes often, apparently because her call history is too full.

・There’s a growing trend where people use another phone (most likely an Android phone) for personal usage, while using a Blackberry phone for work purposes. Messaging apps like Line, WeChat, and KakaoTalk are popular, and are perceived as working a lot better on Android – giving users things like animated emoticons and video calling. These tend to be used more for personal circles rather than work purposes.

・Blackberryユーザーの多くは自分の電話に満足していない。例えば、オンライン販売を行なっている友人は、一日に2回、定期的にBlackberry携帯電話をリセットしている。また別の友人の携帯電は頻繁にクラッシュする。おそらく通話履歴がいっぱいになったためだろう。

・Blackberry携帯電話を仕事目的で使用し、個人用には別の携帯電話（多くの場合Android携帯電話）を使うという傾向が強まっている。like Line、WeChat、KakaoTalkなどのメッセージングアプリは広く利用されており、Android上でより良く動作すると受け止められている。また、動く顔文字やビデオ通話などの機能も提供されている。これらはどちらかといえば、仕事目的ではなく個人的な仲間の間で利用されている。

Ciaran adds that Silverline has so far clocked up “18 months of research, prototyping and user feedback to make sure that seniors love and benefit from our apps.” In addition to what the suite of apps do already, they’re working on bringing them to Android in future and getting the Silverline apps into the iTunes App Store so that anyone can make use of them. Plus, the startup is testing a personal security app that can detect falls, and has started building games that can detect cognitive decline.

To keep the elderly connected once they’ve received the donated handsets, SingTel is giving 1,000 voice and data plans, good for a whole year, to the phone beneficiaries free of charge. Ciaran says that “the need, even just in Singapore, is far greater than that and it’s growing every year. So we have a lot to do.” But the SingTel site suggests that only 27 old iPhones have been donated so far, so the project is in need of a hardware boost so that some of Singapore’s neediest citizens can have these apps at their disposal.

SingTel launches LifeLabs in Israel to invest in biometrics and mobile technology

SingTel, Singapore’s largest mobile operator, has launched a development center in Israel called LifeLabs. Through the center, SingTel will invest in Israeli startups, fund academic and commercial research, and collaborate with incubators and angel investors to spot promising new technology.

The telco will be focusing on voice and facial recognition as well as mobile and wireless infrastructure. It hopes to bring promising technology from Israel to Asia. This is the fourth such “LifeLabs” for SingTel, following similar efforts in Silicon Valley, Boston and Singapore. SingTel has collaborated with Amdocs, a software provider for telecom companies, on this effort.

SingTel has a number of initiative in place to invest in tech startups. Besides SingTel Innov8, a wholly-owned venture capital subsidiary, the telco also operates a Regional Seed Network, an alliance of incubation programs run by members of the SingTel Group.

These incubators are: SingTel Innov8, The Optus Innov8 Seed Program in Australia, Kickstart Ventures in Philippines, and AIS The Startup in Thailand.

Grassroot users comes first

But there are other messaging apps which are also looking to tap into the market here, namely WeChat and Line. The latter app in particular, is quite aggressive in marketing its app through TV ads campaign and has the advantage of being the first mover here. The latest report from Arbitron Mobile said that Indonesia’s number one VoIP app is Line. So how does KakaoTalk plan to beat the competition here?

KakaoTalk representative Susie Lee said that they have big marketing plans for Indonesia, but one of the first things they plan to do is embrace the grass root users first by approaching local communities and developers. They are open to launching their own TV ads campaign in the future.

Regarding the app’s own strengths, Yujin believes that KakaoTalk’s exclusive features like unlimited group chat, its strong Korean taste (which is very popular here in Indonesia), and localized features can prove to be the difference. Furthermore, they are branding themselves as a fun entity. This is done through events like today’s semi-formal press conference and mini games. That might also be helpful to convince a few more users to start using KakaoTalk.

More local taste please!

Indonesia has a different infrastructure compared to South Korea such as internet speed and smartphone penetration – so how does KakaoTalk plan to approach this challenge? Yujin explained that besides making the chat app available on affordable packages by working with local telcos, the company has compressed its stickers and animations here so that it can cope well with the country’s internet speed. They are also planning to work with Indonesian developers soon to work on future KakaoTalk game titles.

In computing, reactive programming is a programming paradigm oriented around data flows and the propagation of change. A modern spreadsheet program is an example of reactive programming. Spreadsheet cells can contain literal values, or formulas such as "=B1+C1" that are evaluated based on other cells. Whenever the value of the other cells change, the value of the formula is automatically updated.
Another example is a hardware description language such as Verilog. In this case reactive programming allows us to model changes as they propagate through a circuit.
Reactive programming has foremost been proposed as a way to simplify the creation of interactive user interfaces, animations in real time systems, but is essentially a general programming paradigm.

‘DirtyBeijing’ App Courts Controversy, Warns Smartphone Users of Crazybad Air

A Beijing-based startup called Fresh Ideas Studio has just released perhaps the most good-looking local air quality app for iPhone and Android, called DirtyBeijing. But it could find itself getting into trouble, as it uses the stricter US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) index – not the one that’s mandated by the Chinese government.

The Fresh Ideas app, free for iPhone and Android, gives Beijing smartphone-toters what’s called the ‘PM2.5’ read-out, which refers to a kind of especially small ‘particulate matter’ that’s less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter.

Being an entrepreneur in China takes balls, but it is those balls that can grandly reward you. The points discussed aren’t meant to scare anyone but instead paint a more realistic picture of what it’s like to do things here. They are also controversial topics which are not always clear cut. China is a place of extremes and it manifests itself just as much in business as anything else.

The most out-of-nowhere viral hit has been the Roo Su! Flood (“know and beat the flood”) video series on YouTube, made by two 26-year-old semi-employed filmmakers. The first video in the series aimed to simplify and bring home the billions of cubic-meters of of water that were bearing down on Bangkok in late October by equating them to cute Blue Whales. The whales have since become a popular culture phenomenon in Thailand, showing up everywhere from women’s nail art to Facebook profile pics, and the main video has been watched over a million times.

Crowsnet is a combination of a web app and iPhone app that aggregates links on Twitter. It collects information on the social web and generates a unique news portal just for you.

The app is developed by Tokyo-based tech startup Rmake who has invented a web-based game development platform. Kaisei is also the creator of Blogopolis, a site that gorgeously visualizes the tech blog buzz in Japan.
