I’m sold! When should I set up shop?

Most of the founders I spoke to believe that the best time to set up shop is after an initial seed round has been raised and the engineering team needs to be expanded. Otherwise, unless the whole team is relocating, most teams find it difficult to coordinate a distributed workforce especially when the product or service does not yet have “interesting” traction. Either way, it is important to not see this as outsourcing, but instead as the chance to develop an integral tech team, and the management – or at least the CTO – will need to spend a significant amount of time with the team to get it ramped up.

When you do come, it will be of course much easier if you are part of a community such as 500 Startups, which has a thriving Taiwanese founder community, but others have found it productive to attend local meetups or hackathons to meet motivated and skilled developers. One of the newest initiatives looking to bridge precisely this gap is Taiwan Startup Stadium, a startup service provider with ample space and programming to help Taiwanese startups to expand globally and for global startups to come to Taiwan.

Bernard Chan of Alpha Camp, a developer bootcamp for aspiring programmers, told me that current annual cash compensation (excluding stock options and other benefits) for those with less than two years experience ranged from NT$560,000 to NT$840,000 (US$18,000 to US$27,000) in Taiwanese startups. A far cry, certainly, from the six-figure salaries currently being thrown around Silicon Valley these days, and indeed on average looks to be one-third or less of what Valley prices are.

But what about Taiwan versus neighboring mainland China? Aside from the fact that China is no longer particularly cheap (according to recent statistics, about half at the junior level are quickly ramping up to be on par with Silicon Valley levels at a dozen years or so of experience), it is also very competitive, whereas Taiwan’s job market is significantly less overheated. Although I do not have detailed data on turnover rates, it certainly feels that anecdotally, my founders managing teams in Taiwan worry far less about the stability of their teams than those operating primarily in mainland China.

The good: easy living and quality talent

For John Fan and his co-founders at PicCollage (disclosure: a 500 Startups company), Taipei was a clear winner versus other cities in Asia due to its decades-long leadership in technology, whereas places like Hong Kong, Singapore, and Shanghai have other major industries such as finance competing for choice talent. As John explains, the “soul” of a city matters, and Taiwan has enough tech in its blood that it’s “possible to find great engineers who are eager to learn and want to work on cool projects.” See this oft-cited Paul Graham essay for more evidence.

Of course, it also helps that Taipei is known to be one of the most livable places in Asia, recently voted by CNN readers to be the best place for food, it also has great infrastructure, an excellent education system, and one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Of the companies I spoke with, none seemed to find it difficult to manage their teams, although all mentioned that the typical Taiwanese engineer was not as outspoken or self-motivated as their Silicon Valley peers.

To solve this, PicCollage focused more on hiring for cultural fit, and created special employee training to boost creativity and to encourage them to be more vocal. Additionally, most Taiwanese developers seemed to have a sufficiently good grasp of English so that work communications proceeded smoothly, although most companies I spoke with did have someone who had some degree of Mandarin Chinese fluency in its core engineering team to facilitate the process.

The not-so-good: different approach to programming

However, founders should know that it is not all rainbows and roses. When Justin Lee, VP of engineering at Spoonrocket, arrived in Taiwan with the intention to build up an engineering team two years ago, he found most programmers had backgrounds in lower-level languages such as C and C++ but knew very little about application development due to the island’s overwhelming focus on hardware.

“It took longer than I expected to find people who suited our needs technically and were also eager to work for a startup,” he said.

Additionally, he felt that the computer science training in local universities tended to focus on specific languages and frameworks instead of taking a more conceptual and algorithmic approach as prevalent in the West. PicCollage also cited a lack of experienced designers on the island, particularly ones who are familiar with Western sensibilities. However, neither of these are insurmountable obstacles, and both companies were eventually able to find the talent they needed at the prices they could afford.

In the present study, we examined the effects of AsA
deficiency on bone metabolism and mechanical properties
in ODS rats, which provided a useful experimental model
of osteopenia caused by AsA deficiency (3, 4). ODS rats
placed on drinking water without AsA for 4 or 5 weeks
showed a decrease in body weight, which is one of the
prominent features of AsA deficiency and has been postulated to be due to malnutrition. It has been demonstrated
that the physiological changes during the stage at which
animals begin to lose body weight by AsA deficiency are
almost identical to those during starvation (1).

PulsePoint claims its optimization on sites and apps gets three times as much time-on-page by users than the standard length of time. One of the company’s clients, TaylorMade Golf, said in a statement accompanying the announcement that it has seen a 95 percent increase in video views since it began a campaign with PulsePoint.

There are no stats yet about whether this increased engagement results in any, you know, increased sales.

I don’t want to sound like I’m picking on Box. This is a problem that seemingly every recent B2B software company is facing. It even took Salesforce until now – when their annual revenue has reached $6 billion – to finally reach profitability.

If that means buying a rocket and strapping it on top, so be it. A tech business wants to be able to navigate the long road with its sharp turns and sudden stops – and build a company for the long haul. Relying on the rocket to power you through those obstacles won’t work once the rocket disappears.
