Since inception, the startup has managed to garner several tech clients in Southeast Asia, including some well-known firms like Go-Jek, GrabTaxi, TopasTV, FlowerAdvisor, Qraved, MicroAd, Kudo, ShopDeca, and more. “It has been a roller­coaster ride for the past six months for Talenta but we finally managed to get a product­-market fit,” says founder Joshua Kevin. “I believe that the trend is with us. Last September, Kevin told Tech in Asia the company’s original concept was to provide varied services for local startups including public relations, community outreach, and events organization. But soon after, following a seed investment from Grace Tahir and East Ventures, Talenta moved its core focus toward human resource services only. It launched in beta the following February.

“It’s been exciting to see Talenta’s progress this year. They’re hitting a billion-dollar industry with full force by offering a tool to help tackle one of the biggest verticals most Indonesian businesses struggle with today,” says Anis Uzzaman, partner at Fenox.

Following the funding round, Talenta plans to expand its monetization method from subscriptions only to include transaction-based revenue. Kevin did not reveal exactly what transactions Talenta will monetize, or what the profit margins could look like, but he did say Talenta will likely work with Jakarta fintech players like CekAja, HaloMoney, and Cermati to help its users apply for products like loans and credit cards.

今回の投資ラウンドに先がけ、Talentaは収益を得る方法を、会費のみからトランザクション処理ベースの収益も含め、拡大する狙いだ。Kevin氏はどのようなトランザクションから収益を得るか、また利ざやはどうなるかは明確にしなかったものの、TalentaはCekAja、HaloMoney、Cermatiといったジャカルタのフィンテックと提携し、ユーザがローンやクレジットカードといった商品を申し込めるようにする動きだ。

“It was a natural movement for us as we grow from product to platform,” explains Kevin. “The subscription-based model has limitations in and of itself while [the] transactional [model] has huge potential.” With more than 1,500 employees on Talenta, the startup is also pushing to partner up with large companies instead of focusing on SMEs only. In the past, Kevin cited Talenta’s focus on small and medium-sized businesses as the company’s core offering.

This new US$1M investment is just the tip of the iceberg, though. A couple of months ago, GMO raised US$65M from multinational banking giant Mitsui Sumitomo to strengthen its GMO Payment Gateway ecommerce payment solution and aid the startups that it serves. GMO still has millions of dollars to invest in epayment companies across East and Southeast Asia, and this Neweb move may just be one among many. Thailand’s 2C2P, which GMO has invested in several times already, could also be in line for a new cash infusion for example.

Looking out for developers more than app stores
“People think about the most obvious ways to solve problems. With developers, it’s solving a problem when they’re writing the code,” said Lawson. “Most people don’t think about reviewing their work after the code has been written. You have to do a lot of detective work.”

What Lawson is referring to is that developers aren’t always looking deep into their code to find out what’s broken and needs to be fixed. Often it might just be a referral to a code library and if something is broken, it can be difficult to find out which customers are affected by the bad code.

Originally geared as a business intelligence service (think Nielsen for apps), SourceDNA has moved beyond telling companies about app trends to helping developers figure out what’s wrong with their apps.

Lawson and his team have spent more than three years working on SourceDNA and seem to have found success with its BI unit. Today, it’s also targeting developers as a new audience, so now the company is addressing both sides of the ecosystem.

Although backed by Y Combinator, SourceDNA is largely bootstrapped thanks to profits gleaned from its BI work.

It is easy to speculate that Wanda Group will take the helm of the joint venture, as the real estate conglomerate maintains a 70% stake in the company, while Tencent and Baidu share the remainder evenly. However, the tie-up will also help the two internet giants to further expand into the lucrative e-commerce market by capitalizing on existing resources, Baidu through maps and Tencent through WeChat’s commitment to payments and social.

Both Baidu and Tencent have reinforced their commitment to heavy early investment in O2O recently. Tencent has made moves to take control in the food delivery and car-hailing markets, while Baidu recently announced a 20 billion RMB investment in O2O group-buying sit Nuomi to fight off competition from private market players including Meituan.

Baidu、Tencent共に、近年、O2Oに対し初期から多額の投資を強めてきている。Tencentは、フードデリバリーや配車市場の主導権を握ろうと動いており、一方BaiduはMeituanといった個人の市場参加者からのコンペティションに勝利すべく、O2Oグループ購入子会社Nuomiに200億人民元を投入すると発表した。

JD is also pushing its O2O business with the support of powerful logistic system, mainly through cooperation with offline stories including supermarkets, convenience stores and fruit and flower stores. Although JD’s O2O business still steers clear of department stores, it would be a rational progression given its dominance in the sectors of consumer electronics, cloths and mother & baby products.

また、JDも、強力な物流システムの支援を受けてO2Oビジネスを推進している。スーパーマーケットやコンビニ、青果店、生花店といったオフラインストーリーの協力が主だ。JDのO2Oビジネスはまだデパートを避けているものの、家電や衣服、マタニティ・ベビー商品部門で優位を誇っていることから、それも理にかなった前進になることだろう。

このサイトをみていて、たまたま見つけて興味をもったので申し込みしました。浅草駅からは15分くらいかかりました。中心からは離れている場所にあり、地図をしっかりみないとわかりづらいかもしれません。2時間となっていましたが、それよりも早くに完成しました。一連の流れを体験できました。わからない部分は何度も丁寧に教えていただきました。とても対応がよかったです。使った機械の一部が80年くらい前から使っているとのことでびっくりしました。雰囲気のあるところで体験ができてよかったです。

I apply it because I happened to see it in this site and got interested in. It took about 15 minutes from Asakusa St. It has some distance from the center, and you would be difficult to find it unless you look into the map. The site says it takes two hours, but I completed earlier. I experienced a series of processes. The staff taught me repeatedly and kindly what I did not understand. Their support was very good.
