If your life were a book and you were the author, how would you want your story to go?
That's the question that changed my life, forever.
Growing up in a hot Las Vegas desert, all I wanted was to be free.
I would daydream about travelling the world living in a place where it snowed,.
.and I would picture all of the stories that I would go on to tell.
At the age of 19, the day after I graduated highschool, I moved to a place where it snowed.
And I became a massage therapist.
With this job, all I needed were my hands and my massage table by my side and I could go anywhere.
For the first time in my life I felt free, independent and completely in control of my life.
That is, until my life took a detour.

I went home from work early one day with what I thought was the flu.
And less than 24 hours later I was in the hospital,.
.on life support with less than a two percent chance of living.
It wasn't until days later,.
.as I lay in a coma, that the doctors diagnosed me with bacterial meningitis.
A vaccine preventable blood infection.
Over the course of two and a half months, I lost my spleen, my kidneys,...
...the hearing in my left ear and both of my legs below the knee.
When my parents wheeled me out of the hospital I felt like I have been pieced back together...
...like a patchwork doll. I thought the worst was over,...
...until weeks later when I saw my new legs for the first time.

そして24時間も経たないうちに私は病院にいて、生命維持装置に繋がれ、助かる確率は2%未満だった。
医師が私の病状を細菌性髄膜炎だと診断したのは、昏睡状態になって何日も経ったあとだった。
ワクチンを打っていれば予防できた感染症。
2ヵ月半という時間の間、脾臓を失い、腎臓を両方失い、
左耳の聴力を失い、両足を膝下から失った。
両親が車椅子に乗った私を病院から連れ出してくれたときに、ばらばらになった体がまとまった気がした。
パッチワーク人形みたいに。最悪の時期は過ぎた、と思った。

The calves were bulky blocks of metal with pipes bolted together for the ankles.
And a yellow rubber foot with the raised rubber line from the toe to the ankle to look like a vein.
I didn't know what to expect but I wasn't expecting that.
With my mom by my side and tears streaming down our faces...
...I strapped on this chunky legs and I stood up.
They were so painful and so confining that all I can think was,...
..."How am I ever going to travel the world on these things?"
"How was I ever going to live the life full of adventure and stories as I always wanted?"
And how was I going to snowboard again?

Translation

ふくらはぎは、大きな金属の塊で出来ていて、かかとの代わりにはパイプがボルトで留められていた。
足は黄色のゴムでできていて、血管みたいな突起がつま先からかかとまで続いている。
何を期待したら良いのかも分からなかったけど、さすがにこれは想像を絶した。
ママが私の隣にいて、一緒に涙を流して泣いてくれた。
そしてこのゴツゴツした足を取り付けて立ち上がった。
義足はあまりにも痛くて、酷く締め付けるので、頭に浮かんだのは
「こんなのでどうやって世界を旅できるっていうの？」
「ずっと夢見ていた冒険で詰まった人生をどうやったら過ごせるの？」
そして、「どうしたらスノーボードにまた乗れるの？」という疑問だけだった。

the cloth for the roof is packed in the acessory area of the box like were the fender skirts are is what i was told by franklin mint the car was never out of the box axcept to taks pic.s for ebay it should be there i didnt even know there was a top i thought it was a conv. but i did contact franklin mint to see and agan they said the top was packed is a styrafoam part of the accesory are of the package as the top wont go down on the car with the cloth on it i even learned somthing new on the car i never knew it had that option so please look in every crack and corner onf the box as they tell me its there and if not let me know as i will contact them again and get it resolved thank you

The company's credo on hiring people meant that a mediocre new employee was considered a worse situation than a disastrous appointment. 'We're actually OK if the person doesn't come into work', Gates explained to Microsoft managers when outlining his hiring priorities. 'But if you have somebody who's mediocre, who just sort of gets by on the job, then we're in big trouble.'

The problem, as Gates saw it, was that a mediocre employee was hard to get rid of but occupied a place in the company that could be filled by someone brilliant. To avoid this, in the early days he insisted that the company employ fewer employees than were actually required to carry out the work.

Imagine carefully tended lawns surrounding wooded areas, and low-slung buildings with grey-white facing and mirrored windows nestling in-between. The original buildings were designed in the shape of an X to maximize the natural light inside. Unlike the open-¬plan buildings popular elsewhere in the corporate world, each office was fully enclosed with a door, and intended for one occupant.

This was a deliberate attempt to create the sort of solitude and privacy Gates felt was necessary to allow his employees to 'sit and think' as he said he wanted them to.
To ensure social interaction, the campus also included numerous cafeterias which provided food at prices subsidized by the company.

[1] I had my own reactions to Paul's essay-- on the whole I liked it but when I connected some dots I found some suggestions of things I strongly disliked-- not so much in the essay as suggested by it.

[2] A danger sign that fellow-obsessionals will at once recognize is the tendency to regard the happiest moments of your life as those that occur when someone who has an appointment to see you is prevented from coming.

[3] The pagans were incensed at the rashness of a recent and obscure sect, which presumed to accuse their countrymen of error, and to devote their ancestors to eternal misery.
