In order to control the TV screen like before, SARFT released an operating system for smart TV, named TVOS, at the end of 2013 and would issue a notice (in Chinese) last month asking all cable companies across China to have all the connected TVs they purchase or install for consumers loaded with the system.

A search for Starbucks in Chinese reveals 36 fake Starbucks accounts within WeChat. Since these are ‘official’ accounts that are different from what normal people use, these fakesters have, bafflingly, been approved by Tencent (HKG:0700), the maker of WeChat. At least in this case a yellow check mark shows the actual, ‘verified’ “Starbucks China” WeChat account:

But it’s not always so clear cut. Let’s now search within WeChat for LV, which is the common abbreviation for luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton in China. That shows dozens of results – in fact, we stopped counting at 100. Confusingly, many of these are verified with the yellow symbol. But, in this case, those apparently verified and authenticated accounts are not the true LV account and are in fact related to online sellers of LV bags and other (possibly counterfeit) luxury items. So that means the impostors have not only been approved by Tencent but have also been issued with a verified badge.

That makes WeChat verification meaningless and exposes users of the social app to potential fraud from these scurrilous accounts.

Wait… it gets even weirder. As noticed yesterday by Andrew Schorr, CEO of a startup called Grata writing on the company blog about reporting trademark violations in WeChat, some of the fake LV accounts have put the yellow ‘verified’ badge inside their thumbnail picture, which makes it look like they’re verified when they’re not. It’s a cunning trompe l’oeil that’s barely discernible without a magnifying glass. Here’s a closer look:

So where is the real LV brand account? It’s somewhere in that jumble, but it’s impossible to pick out due to WeChat’s awful search function and the flood of fakers. LV’s actual WeChat official account is called ‘louisvuittonofficial.’ “That’s difficult to spell, especially for non-native English speakers,” Schorr tells Tech in Asia. That’s why QR codes have worked so well for WeChat – but it highlights how much Tencent has neglected to tidy up the rest of its WeChat official accounts, especially for users who try to search for brands by name within the app.

Xiaomi’s Mi3 hits India on July 15, and Micromax should be paranoid

Chinese phone maker Xiaomi will start its account in India with the flagship Mi3 on July 15. The smartphone is priced aggressively at INR 14,299 (US$250) and is sure to shake up the affordable smartphone market in India with top-of-the-line specs.

India has been eagerly waiting for Xiaomi’s first offering. The company’s announcement on Facebook today got close to 500 likes in minutes. Mi3 has a nice ring to it for Indians. MI stands for Mumbai Indians, a cricket team with the biggest fan following in the Indian Premier League. And thanks to James Bond spy thrillers, the British secret service MI5 is a household name in India.

But the smart buyer in India, who is spoilt for choice in affordable smartphones, will be looking mainly at the specs and the brand.

Mi3 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz quad-core processor, with features like 2GB RAM and eMMC 4.5 flash memory. It will run on Android 4.3 KitKat with Xiaomi’s MIUI skin on top of it, and has a F/2.2 13MP 28m wide-angle camera at the back, a 2MP front camera, and 16GB of internal storage. Its pressure-sensitive touch screen will allow you to operate it even with wet hands. Mi’s battery has 30 percent more capacity than its predecessor’s; that translates to 21 hours of internet use on 3G and 25 hours of talk time on 2G.

Should Micromax be scared? Most definitely

India’s affordable phone makers Micromax, Xolo and Karbonn, which forced leaders like Samsung and Apple to rethink their pricing for the Indian market, will be jittery as hell with the entry of such a well-regarded Chinese competitor rapidly going global. After all, Xiaomi has better value propositions, and possibly better supply chain linkages than its Indian counterparts.

The problem that Micromax and others face is that smartphone manufacturing never took root in India, despite the huge market for the devices. The Indian players were happy to source parts from Chinese manufacturers at attractive rates and assemble the phones in India. But now with smartphone volumes quintupling in a year, can their suppliers keep up with the mushrooming demand? Phone makers in China could have an advantage because of their proximity to hardware suppliers.

Micromax and others – even Xiaomi – are aware of the supply chain issues cropping up because of the steep rise in volumes of smartphones being shipped in India and China. Hugo Barra of Xiaomi, who leads its global rollout, shared with Bloomberg recently the company’s plans to work closely with its manufacturing partners.

And Reuters reported a couple of months back that Micromax was interested in a stake in South Korean smartphone maker Pantech, which manufactures its own phones — although nothing more was heard on that front, and Micromax refused to confirm such a move. Maybe now with Xiaomi breathing down its neck and the OnePlus One expected soon, Micromax will give it a second thought.

These business cards can generate some healthy income too. Printer owners can offer photos to customers for free, but Welomo tells merchants the “suggested price” for each photo is RMB 3 a pop, which consumers pay using WeChat’s built-in payment service. That’s not going to turn a cafe owner into a billionaire, but it will bring in some extra cash – not unlike the gumball machines planted outside supermarkets and movie theaters.

Chance Jiang, co-founder of Welomo, tells Tech in Asia that the flexibility in pricing helps broaden the use cases for the printers. Already, brands ranging from trans-continental hot pot chain Haidilao to telco China Unicom have purchased Welomo machines for marketing and entertainment purposes.

“Haidilao offered free printing services and they thought this would be an add-on that would allow the consumers and diners to share content with their friends,” says Jiang. “But later on they found out that the machine could generate revenue to cover the cost of the machine itself.”

In many ways, Welomo recalls the “everyone pays, everyone wins” business model of WeChat rival Line. In that app, big companies will pay Line for permission to sell branded stickers to users, usually for about US$0.99 a set. As a result, brands get viral marketing and a little cash that might even recoup the initial investment, Line gets cash and increased engagement, and consumers get a virtual good they can show off to friends. The difference with Welomo is that businesses invest in a physical printer, rather than an account, and they sell a physical piece of paper, rather than a digital illustration.

Printing your own destiny

Welomo banks on China’s WeChat-drenched zeitgeist, but co-founder Mike Huang, who originally conceived of the company, has a respectable background in so-called online-to-offline technology. In 2003, before graduating from South China University of Technology, he attempted to start a company that let feature phones – the ones with the buttons and tiny screens – control washing machines. That project failed for obvious reasons, but Huang remained undeterred. He tasted success for the first time with a wireless printer for enterprises that caught on big with China’s logistics industry, but still yearned to create something bigger and consumer-facing.

The early vision for Welomo resembles its current business model, but with one key difference. Huang and his teammates originally built Welomo printers to work with native iOS and Android apps. When WeChat opened its API to third-party app developers in 2012, the team got on board as an afterthought. It was only when Allen Zhang, the mastermind behind WeChat, reached out to Welomo and invited them to visit Tencent’s offices in Shenzhen that the messaging app became the core of the Welomo vision.

Sorry it's taken so long to respond. I went back to the post office this past Friday and they were being a real pain.
