In the "Ranking of World Cities One Wants to Visit During Travelling" survey results released by a leading travel magazine in America, Kyoto was chosen as Number 1 among Japan's cities for the first time last year.
Since it is expected that the number of foreign visitors will increase more and more from now on, Mr Takumi Kitano says, "I will be mindful of using easily understandable keywords during interactions" when asked about the kind of encounters he wants with customers.
The number of foreign tourists will be increased more and more, so
we asked episodes around customer services to an officer Mr.Takumi Kitano,
who give priority to use plain words fur customers.
Among rankings by major American travel magazines last year of "Cities You Want to Visit Around the World", Kyoto took first place for the first time.
As the number of foreign tourists visiting Kyoto is expected to grow, Mr. Kitano tries to to use key words in his explanations in order to make it easy for visitors to understand Kyoto. We asked him to tell us about some of these interactions.
"Few people, flowing water, and gardens with blooming flowers." Was the request of a Hollywood actress, so I recommended Taizo-in at the Myoshinji Temple. She was not disappointed!
・What are foreign tourists most confused by when visiting Kyoto for the first time?
That many places in the city don't accept credit cards as a form of payment. That wi-fi is limited. That they can't use English to communicate. That there are few places to withdraw money.
As the request from a certain Hollywood actress for "Less human, water flows, garden that flowers are blooming", Myoshinji Taizō-in-Sama was recommended and she was very pleased.
●What it is the confusing thing for the foreign customers who came to Kyoto for the first time?
The location that can be used a credit card is limited. The Wi-Fi environment is limited. difficult to communicate in English. Less place available to withdraw money.
We have to say what we think cleary, unless we lose the trast.
We should not think they understanad us automatically.
Avoid ambigous comment, and it is important not to nod without any words.
●Would you tell me what you importance during escourt of foreign tourists.
I strive to use plain words to tell what Japan is, and it would be best
if they are impressed by Japanese traditional landscape.
I feel like they think we can't be strong willed, and feel distrustful. I don't think they believe people will try to understand them. Be careful to avoid vague answers, and don't just smile and nod.
・Do you have a motto when escorting foreign tourists?
I try to use easy to understand keywords when guiding guests. I like to tell guests about Japan as it is, and turn a casual atmosphere into a memorable experience.
They wouldn't trust us if we don't show our intentions clearly. It's better not think that they would understand us. We had better avoid giving them vague replies and pay attention to just keep nodding in silence.
Please share your thoughts about your best services that you can offer foreign visitors when you escort them.
Examples are that you try to use key words which they can understand easily or make efforts to change ordinary Japanese daily scenery into unforgettable moves.
