In order to use iBeacon, both transmitting and receiving terminals for beacon are required in the first place. Of course, iOS supports both functions but we can not use many expensive iOS devices for transmitting terminals. This leads to the emergence of third parties like Estimote that offer affordable devices.

You need a calling device and receiving device of beacon to use iBeacon. Although both of them can be worked on iOS, you can not use many expensive iOS devices as calling devices.
Consequently, cheap third party devices like Estimote are becoming famous one after another.
