On the basis of these studies, the National Hemophilia Foundation's Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC) recommended that in the USA primary prophylaxis be considered optimal therapy for persons with severe hemophila (FIX levels < 1% ), beginning at an early age (1-2 years). Prophylactic regimens for the treatment of hemophilia B are aimed at maintaining a trough level of FIX activity > 1% of normal.
