The current government convened the first meeting of Headquarters for Japan's Economic Revitalization on January 8th 2013,endorsing the outline of the government's emergency economic package, which includes the promotion to create the innovation. As the current prime minister strongly stressed in the previous term of office, the Japanese government has continued to recognize that the innovation is essential for economic growth. But we have never heard that it is performing up to expectation. I can not help feeling that the government, including the prime minister, has never consider the process to create innovation.

Joseph Alois Schumpeter is one of those who explained the importance of innovation in economic growth.

The current regime launched "Headquater for the Revival of Japanese Economy" as an emergent solution for the economic crisis. Along with its launching, innovations are expected to take place throughout the field. As Mr. Abe, the current prime minister insisted during his previous term, Japanese government has admitted that innovation is so necessary that economic growth could not be achieved without it. Although the government realized the truth, however, the result was not satisfying. In my opinion, maybe it is because the members of the goverment, including the prime minister himself, have never thought about how innovation happens.

Joseph A. Schumpeter, is one of them who emphasized the importance of innovation for economic growth.

He gave following five elements as technological innovation in his work "The Theory of Economic Development".

1 production of new goods
2 introduction of new method of production
3 exploitation of new sales destination
4 acquisition of new suppliers
4 creaton of new organisations

Schumpeter originally called tecnological innovation as 'new combination'. The appellation is very suggestive to create tecnological innovation, becase it tells us new ideas are not born from nothing but it is a creative combination of existing knowledge. To make new combination, the existing order should be destroyed at first.

He mentioned 5 elements about technological innovation in "The theory of economic growth"

1. To produce new goods
2. To introduce new manufacturing methods
3. To break into new markets
4. To gain new suppliers
5. To refresh the orginizational system (breaking down monopoly, etc)

Schumpeter, originally refers to technological innovation as a "new combination", which implies a lot for us. What he means is that new ideas do not come from nothing; they are formed by combining conventional knowledge creatively.
For this new combination to take place, we must break down the existing rules first.

But merely destroying them can generate nothing more than traditional
structure. Many of new materials should be prepared. New combination would be generated from there. The wind of new combination turns out from the order, to chaos and then restructuring.
Suppose for a while that there's a state of stability in which existing knowledge stands in a methodical manner. By bringing a great deal of new knowledge in it, mixing them to demoralize to interact with each other, new combination would be born from there and new ideas that lead to innovation could be generated.

However, you cannot expect better results just by breaking it down. You have to prepare for lots of new material, and this is where the new combination takes place.
The flow of the new combination among innovators becomes more and more whirling as it proceeds, and then reorganized. Let's say that the conventional knowledge is in an orderly manner; what we do for innovation is introduce various fresh knowledge and mix it with the conventional one only for it to be chaos, in which new combinations pop out that lead to the ideas for innovation.

By multiple knowledge getting mixed with each other, in a complex way, something which we would never imagine from the individual sources will come out. Because innovation comes out from things combined or structured in new ways, we ought to have as many variety of knowledge as possible. We need to create a chaotic environment and try out to see the knowledge’s to work with each other. It will generate a new structure with different combination but that is the innovation.
Innovators see the new structure in the chaos. Anarchy is indispensable to create an innovation which means wide range of knowledge is also necessary. It’s a tough thing to do for people that are specialized in one thing.

More than one knowlege could produce new effect, which is unexpected from indivicual element, being complexly entangled mutually. As innovation appears from new combination structure, we should prepare motley knowledege as much as possible at any rate. Making chaotic state
and testing an interaction of knowledge cause the emergence of new combination structure. This is innovation.
An innovator is a person who gains an insight into new structure from chaos. As anarchy is fundamental to create innovation, very comprehensive knowledge is essential. A nerd would not be of advantage in this case.

Knowledge is not necessarily something one can obtain only from books. Talking with many people or experiencing things physically would also help one to gain knowledge. Wide variety of communication, by itself, provides a new connection experience. What is important is to equip the knowledge to respond to any kinds of discussion topics, and to bring a chaos into the place through that.
Shiki Masaoka, one of the prominent innovators in Japan’s modern literature, named himself “Datsusai Shooku Shujin (master of scattered books)”. Without wide variety of knowledge, innovation will not be promoted. Without wide variety of communication, there will be no innovation.

Knowledge can be obtained from other sources than books. Discussion with a variety of people and diverse experiences enrich the knowledge. A large variety of communication itself is a new connection. It is important to have knowledge applicable to any type of topics so that we can bring about chaotic situation from the knowledge.
Shiki Masaoka, one of the most innovative persons among Japanese modern literature, pronouces himself "an owner of Dassaishoya (the chaotic bookstore)". Dassaigyo (people who love to read books and talk about them) is fundamental for promoting the creation of innovation. No innovation will be created without a variety of communication.
