Toshihiro Fukui, a driver, is so kind, and whenever he sees a foreign traveler on a street, he cannot ignore him. I asked him to tell us a story.
・Would you tell me about any incident and place that a foreign customer has appreciated most.
It was the time when I took my customer to a hospital and a pharmacy for his prescription. And when I took him to a Eastern medicine shop as well, he was really pleased.
We asked Mr. Fukui, who can't help but to offer his assistance when he finds tourists lost in downtown Kyoto, about some of his encounters on the job.
・Many foreign tourists are very excited about visiting Kyoto. Can you tell us about what your guests are most pleased by when visiting the city?
People who need prescription medicine are really happy when I can show them where to find it at hospitals and pharmacies in the city. They're also quite pleased when I can direct them to shops offering Chinese herbal medicine.
I usually worry about food most. For example, I wonder if a customer does not mind eating Japanese food or whether he does not have any food allergy.
- Is there anything that you feel like, "Actually a foreign traveler is usually thinking this way!" ?
Many visitors have told me that it is hard to understand road signs since they are in the Roman alphabet, not in English. But if you are in a MK cab, everything is OK. If you get lost, try to find the Kyoto tower. That leads you Kyoto Station! I jokingly tell him so. (lol)
People are very concerned about the food. They have worries about eating Japanese-style food, or they worry because they have allergies, etc.
・"So this is how foreigners think!" Do you ever come across this feeling?
People often say that road signs are mostly written in romaji (Japanese transcribed in roman letters), rather than English, so they are hard to understand. However, if you hire an MK driver, you'll be fine! If you do get lost, please look for the Kyoto Tower. Then you can find Kyoto Station! is the joke I like to make.
I will do my best to make your travel comfortable.
Please enjoy your stay at KYOTO with me.
●What is your approach when escorting foreign customers?
I try to make an atmosphere that is easy for customers to speak up, by asking such as "Did you enjoy the garden walk?" or "Are you not tired?", instead of a unilateral talk from me.
●Please give a message to customers in English.
I will do my best to make your travel comfortable.
Please enjoy your stay at KYOTO with me.
For me, not only unilaterally talking but ask such as "Do you enjoy walking at the garden?",
"Are not you already tired?" to create the atmosphere that the customers are easy to talk.
●Please use english for the message to the customers.
I will do my best to make your travel comfortable.
Please enjoy your stay at KYOTO with me.

How do you spend your days off?
Even on days off I often visit various temples and shrines, or eat at delicious restaurants and sweet shops to keep up my energy. When I see tourists lost downtown I usually approach them without thinking and try to help. When I traveled abroad many kind people helped me out, so I like to think that I'm returning that favor through my mini-volunteering. I'm really happy that I can do this kind of work in the town I was born and grew up in.
・Any last messages to customers?
Even on holiday, I visit the temples and shrines, the delicious restaurants and Suites shops to nourish excellent talent. You do not think about meet with the tourists from foreign country who are lost in the city and you are willing to greet them. Since I was treated kindly when I was at abroad, so I am trying to give back even a little and working hard for volunteer activities. I am really happy to be able to participate in this work at the hometown.
He usually worries about food most. For example, he wonders if he can handle Japanese food or whether he will have any allergic reaction."
