“70% of our customers choose to stay in the top cities, where business and tourism are most demanding,” said Adrian. He hopes to expand the network to over 100,000 apartments this year.Who are the customers?“Most of them are of 20-30 year-old, traveling in groups of 2-3 people. Some of them are business travelers and some of them are just tourists,” said Adrian. He expected, when school holidays come, there will be groups of parents traveling with their kids to attend various training schools.
And when school year finishes, there will be colleague graduates traveling to major cities, seeking jobs. Since these are residential apartments, they are generally bigger and cheaper than hotels. 80% of the rooms are under Rmb 250 per room night. There are kitchens and washing machines, too. Therefore, it is more convenient for people who are going to be staying for a while.Next phase – Service Quality
In the next phase, Airizu is going to setup a call center to support its service and increase service quality. “Service quality will be key to our success,” said Adrian. Right now, Airizu calls its customer to review about their experience, 1-2 days after their stay. “We have to ensure the standard of quality,” said Adrian. He hopes to setup some standard for the property owners, so that customers will have more or less the same experience in different places in its network. “Just like Home Inn, customers know what they are expecting wherever they stay,” said Adrian.
Revenue and FundingAirizu charges a commission for each room-night booked via their website. In the future, Adrian also hopes to get advertising fee from property owners who want to list their apartments in top places. “We can also try to arrange other services for property owners, such as cleaning, supplying towels and bed sheets, etc. We could also offer car rental services to customers in near future, too.”Airizu is funded by a German startup incubator, Rocket Internet, which has invested over 2 million Euros so far. Most recently Airizu has received a lot of interest from top tier funds and is actively in discussions for another round of funding.
The Management TeamAdrian, CEO of Airizu, is a serial entrepreneur. Before founding Airizu, the Cambridge & Stanford graduate founded idapted.com, an online English learning service, which was sold in 2011. His partner, CMO Alex Zhang, a Stanford graduate, is also a serial entrepreneur, who has launched his own wine brand before. Another partner, COO Ben Zhang, a Chicago MBA graduate was one of the founding team members of Gaopeng, Groupon’s Joint-venture in China.
Real Name Checks on Weibo Won’t Come Cheap for Sina, TencentWith it now certain that China’s popular Weibo (microblogging) services – prime among them being Sina’s (NASDAQ:SINA) and Tencent’s (HKG:0700) – will have to implement real-name ID checks in the coming months, it appears that the system will not come cheap. Indeed, each single online check of a user’s name and national ID number will cost a rumored 2 RMB (US$0.20). And so for Sina and Tencent, the government-mandated checks could end up costing them hundreds of millions of RMB for their 250 to 300 million Weibo users.
But it was never going to come free. And it raises the complex issue of potential government ties to the company, called id5, that will process these real-name checks. That little-known company will be the prime beneficiary of these sixteen new regulations for microblogs. It is the government that charges the fee, but it’s id5 that will handle all the processing.Sohu IT reports that the Beijing-based Time Weekly newspaper has tried repeatedly to question staff at the mysterious id5 about this, but journalists have been turned away.
If, say, 75 percent of Sina’s 250 million Weibo users turn out to be real people or companies – i.e. not spammers or zombie accounts – who wish to continue using the service, then all those checks would cost Sina a total of 375 million RMB (US$59 million).Being Held Accountable For Your TweetsThe official line is that the real-ID clampdown will help stop false rumors (and maybe spam as well) spreading via the numerous Twitter-like services. But other analysts fear it’s a move to suppress free speech on these lively and increasingly popular sites.
(Note that microblog users can still use cutesy and wacky nicknames – but Sina, Tencent, Netease (NASDAQ:NTES), and all those other operators, will have every user’s actual name and number on file). These charges have been levied before, and industry insiders believe that Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) had to pay up for its (failed and shuttered) microblog, Shuoba – but that the search engine giant ended up paying more than the rumored 2 RMB that it’ll cost in 2012. It’s not clear if the real-name requirement deterred users, or if Shuoba simply failed to take off because it arrived too late to be a contender.
業界に詳しい筋によるとBaidu(NASDAQ:BIDU)は、自身のマイクロブログサービスShuoba(失敗し、閉鎖となってしまったが)のつけを払うことになってしまった。
Sina’s and Tencent’s shares have been stable since the new regulations were outlined on December 16th – but the full pain of implementation has not yet begun. It will be costly for the companies, and could drive some users away from using any Weibo platform.Follow this developing issue on our ‘real-name’ tag as it becomes mandated on other areas of the Chinese web as well.
Chinese Web Gaming Companies See High-Level Execs QuittingIf the excitement about Diablo 3 is any indication, games in China aren’t any less popular than they were a year ago, but something does seem to be afoot in the online gaming industry, which has seen a number of high-level execs leave their positions in the past quarter.
The list of the departed includes Changyou 17173′s General Manager, Ganglan Online’s COO, Jinshan Games’s Director, Changyou’s Deputy Director, Shanda’s (NASDAQ:SNDA) Deputy Director, Fancheng’s Deputy Director, Zhongqingbao’s Deputy Director, Target Software’s Deputy Director, etc. A high-level government official responsible for regulating online gaming also left his post in late 2011. Actually, although interest in games certainly hasn’t decreased, the market has become a bit over-saturated with online gaming companies, many of which have very similar offerings. As a result, it’s been tough going for some online game operators in recent months.
According to Sina Tech, many of these folks left their jobs to take positions at or found their own startups, which could mean a change in the winds is coming for China’s online gaming industry. Frankly, that wouldn’t be a bad thing; a little innovation might shake up the industry a bit and stop people from churning out derivative crap like this.
Sina Tech
What the Future Looks Like for Chinese LBS?Ever since Foursquare made an overnight sensation at SXSW (South by Southwest) in last March in Austin, Texas, its siblings emerged upon the scene quickly in both U.S. and China with more or less similar features – check into where you are to announce your whereabouts. If Facebook is all about who am I, Twitter is all about what I’m talking about, then LBS service like Foursquare is trying to tell people where am I.
From Fifty to FifteenTwo years after Foursquare’s SXSW debut show, the once heated LBS market now has showed signs of cooling down in both markets. Gowalla was acquired by Facebook and the service would be discontinued in next year. Whrrl was acquired by Groupon in this April. In China, Digu shed 70% of headcounts two months ago largely due to uncertain profitability prospect. Digu claims 20.8% of Chinese LBS market according to a report by Beijing-based market researcher AnalysysInternational. For last year there’re at least 50 LBS services in China market, while in this year only about 15 remained.
Digu co-founder Huang Xiaotao once said that “LBS in China is in a place that we need tocultivate the market and users, it’s too early to explore feasible business models.”His remark mirrored in some of the largest Chinese LBS service providers’ shift in strategy. LBS Plus Ecommerce
Jiepang, one of the leading LBS service which just launched its latest apps has been providing discounts and coupons for its users who check into local merchants, a move to not only facilitate check-in behavior among hardcore LBS early-adopters but also gain traction among regular smartphone users, they might not that interested in check-ins, but with coupon and discounts, why not. Shanda’s Qieke as well as Kaikai also give benefits to their users. Qieke CEO Liang Zhen said that “after a long-term effort of trial, we believed that the combination of LBS and ecommerce will be an ideal business model.” Liang expects RMB tens of millions revenue through what he called the LBS+O2O mix.
Industry experts once pointed out that there’re three types of LBS mix in China, which are LBS + social, LBS + games and LBS + ecommerce, while the first two are both bothered by glimmer revenue picture, LBS plus ecommerce without question would be a nature choices for them. Qieke announced lately that the company will be reducing its investments into the first two model whereas increasing money into the exploration of O2O.
As of Q3 of this year, there’re 18.3 million LBS users in China, up from the 10.5 million in Q2. By the end of Q4, the number would be 30 million, AnalysysInternation estimated. And after the group buying heat, people are more or less familiar with the idea of buying online and consuming offline. The market is maturing.Look out for the Big GuysEven though, these LBS service – if they step into the ecommerce forefront- would be seeing ferocious competition from some of the local giants like Dianping. The Chinese Yelp has long claimed itself as an ideal combination of “Yelp + Groupon + Foursquare”.
This maybe sound like a selling story for Wall Street, but none of these LBS services could afford to ignore Dianping’s move and determination in the market. Founded in 2003, Dianping now has indexed more than 1 million local merchants scattered in more than 2,000 Chinese cities. The site just raised more than US$ 100 million at a valuation of over 1 billion while the funding would go towards marketing, mobile businesses (such as check-in), and potential acquisition.
