None of this is to say that MessageMe isn’t good; it is. Personally, I found it to be a better user experience than some of these Asian apps, and if my friends adopt it, I’ll probably start using it in addition to WeChat. But let’s not kid ourselves. If the geography was reversed so that Line, KakaoTalk, WeChat, and Cubie were Western apps and MessageMe was an Asian app, MessageMe would be getting called a copycat and you’d see phrasing like “Asia’s WeChat” in the headlines on tech news sites.

Of course, none of these Asian apps invented the concept of mobile messaging either, but they did pioneer and popularize the multimedia-based vision of mobile messaging with things like stickers and doodles that MessageMe is now following. That’s a big part of why all of these apps have been so successful. WeChat boasts more than 300 million users, Line has more than 100 million, and KakaoTalk has more than 70 million.

It would be great if Asian apps like Line and WeChat got some recognition for their innovation, at the very least, the folks at MessageMe stopped pretending their app is revolutionary. By creating such a smooth and lightweight app, the MessageMe team has definitely given us one of the most evolved versions of the mobile chat app we’ve yet seen, and that’s great. But for anyone familiar with Asia’s popular chat apps, there’s definitely no revolution here.

iPhone 5S Might Be Delayed Due Production Challenges With Fingerprint Sensor

Even though the iPhone 5 was launched in October of 2012, many analysts and pundits believe that Apple will likely release the iPhone 5S sometime this summer.

KGI Securities analysts Ming-Chi Kuo thinks that you shouldn’t get your hopes too high for a new iPhone though. In a report he released today, Kuo claims Apple is facing production problems on both the iPhone 5 and cheaper iPhone and that they won’t launch until Q3 of 2013.

There is probably nothing I hate more with Apple news than analysts making silly claims without any actual sources, but Ming-Chi Kuo has been fairly reliable in the past, so he’s worth listening to with an ear of skepticism.

According to Kuo, the iPad mini 2 has also been delayed, so all three products will be launching later than he originally forecasted. Kuo states that the iPhone 5S, cheaper iPhone, and iPad mini 2 won’t ship by July, but he also doesn’t give a firm target date for when to expect models.

Part of the problem with the iPhone 5S products lies in the rumored fingerprint sensor that Apple is adding.

Finding the right color coatings to prevent interference with the sensor has been an unforeseen challenge, but after the fiasco of the original white iPhone, we’re not all that surprised.

Along with the delays on the physical production of the iPhone 5S, we’ve also heard that Apple’s been hard pressed to get iOS 7 finished in time. Thanks to the significant changes pushed by Jony Ive, Apple has pulled engineers off of OS X 10.9 to help get iOS 7 finished by this summer. Last year, the iOS 6 beta was revealed months before the iPhone 5, so keep in mind that Apple doesn’t necessarily need to finish the iPhone 5S by the time iOS 7 is ready.

Alleged Parts for Upcoming iPhone Leak Again, Mute Switch to Become Push Button?

Several weeks ago, photos of a pair of parts alleged to be from the iPhone 5S surfaced through a Japanese parts vendor. The parts included a flex cable for the device's home button and a second flex cable housing the vibrator and volume/mute controls.

Another Japanese parts vendor, iLab Factory, has now posted a new set of photos showing not only those two parts but also a third flex cable that appears to house the device's front camera. iLab Factory points out that these parts may be from the iPhone 5S but could alternatively be from Apple's rumored lower-cost iPhone.

One interesting item of note that we neglected to point out in our previous report relates to the vibrator/volume control flex cable. The part contains a strip of three buttons to run along the edge of the device, corresponding to the locations of the two volume buttons and the mute switch on previous iPhone models. But on this part, all three features appear to be buttons, suggesting that this upcoming iPhone may see the mute switch become a push button.

iLab Factory also notes that the vibrator in this part uses a dual-head design, which is distinct from the iPhone 5 vibrator design, although it is unclear what may have prompted the change.

The other two parts shared by iLab Factory reveal little information, with the home button flex cable appearing essentially identical to the previously seen part except for a part number change from 821-1684-01 to 821-1684-02. These parts do, however, contain a significantly longer cable than seen on the corresponding iPhone 5 part.

The layout of the front camera flex cable is nearly identical to the corresponding iPhone 5 part, although this leaked part is missing the microphone and other sensors seen on the iPhone 5 part offered by iFixit.

Shoppink is a beautiful mobile blogshop browser for Singaporeans

Shoppink is an iPhone app that converts online blog shops into mobile photo albums, allowing you to browse even while on the go.

In 2011, LiveJournal, one of Singapore’s largest online portals which hosted over 50,000 Singapore-based blogshops recorded a total of S$96 million (US$77 million) in transactions. Considering the size of Singapore, the number is a significant one in showing that e-commerce is huge in the country. While there are a lot of blogshops around, there are no mobile blogshop aggregators that allow easy browsing of all the popular shops. Recognizing this, Shoppink is launching a mobile app to provide just that.

An Experiment in HTML5 Gaming Inside WeChat

We get the feeling that the hugely popular messaging app WeChat will eventually move into social gaming. (We asked earlier this afternoon but a Tencent rep declined to comment). Until then, the closest we have is this fun experiment in HTML5 gaming from a startup game studio called DuoPao. Basically, DuoPao has opened up a regular brand account on WeChat and is using it to let followers access and play a wide variety of HTML5 games – right inside WeChat.

We tested out a couple of the games and the results are, inevitably, quite basic. The idea is mainly being held back by the built-in WeChat web browser, which is more of an after-thought than a modern and fully-fledged browser. It prevents the games going full-screen, and some of the games will only work if you proceed to open them up in another browser like Safari or Chrome. But then none of this is being supported officially by Tencent, makers of the 300-million-user-strong app. Here’s how it works:

…Then the game starts inside WeChat’s rather basic web browser. No chance of going full-screen. Er… That’s it.

According to a post on Zhihu – a sort of Chinese Quora – by one of the DuoPao team, the studio so far has “received more than 5,000 users at zero cost” via this WeChat channel. About 1,500 are daily active users inside WeChat. Not bad for a free sideline to their usual distribution methods.
