Hands-on With Alibaba’s Set-top Killer Tmall Box 2: It is Not Only About Videos

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is planning to sell a new Tmall Box at the upcoming Singles’ Day sales promotion gala on Nov. 11, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The set-top box is expected to retail at RMB399 (US$65) during the sales event, down from the original price of RMB798.

The new product has recovered from setbacks by the state regulations which precluded the Tmall Box from streaming online video from providers like Youku and Sohu to TV. I got a chance to take an early peek at the long-awaited device and see how it handled.

Unlike the first generation of the product which was a typical “box” with chamfered edges, Tmall Box 2 adopts an elegant unibody design with a silver base stretching to the upper part of the device as silver stripes. The rest of the cover is a white or champagne plastic frame with the Tmall logo on it. The box itself is a light and portable device weighing just 244 grams and measuring 118×111×26.8mm.

Powered by Alibaba’s in-house operating system YunOS 2.0, the set-top-box has an Amlogic S80 quad-core processor, Mali 450 GPU, 8G flash memory and 2GB memory. It supports 300M 2.4G/5G dual-channel WiFi connections.

Once you’ve hooked it up, you will be required to log in with your Taobao account either by scanning the QR code via the Taobao Mobile app or by directly inputting your account information. For most smartphone users, the QR code would be the best choice. The input procedure is a little odd in that the keyboard is arranged in alphabetical order, rather than the more familiar Qwerty keyboard.

After logging in, you’re led to a main menu of a wide variety of content including, new movies and TV series, entertainment programs, documentaries, kids’ programs, games, apps, music, and of course e-commerce.

Tencent’s latest gamble: a 7.5% stake in lottery tech company CLS

Chinese web giant Tencent (HKG:0700) has bought a 7.53 percent stake in lottery technology and equipment provider China LotSynergy Holdings (HKG:1371), according to Techweb.

Tencent conditionally agreed to buy nearly 600 million shares for an undisclosed amount. Based on CLS’s share price as of press time, that puts the figure somewhere north of US$65 million. Techweb reports the company could raise up to US$87 million.

CLS makes and sells lottery equipment and systems, games, and other solutions as well as technical operations to install and maintain these terminals. That includes, video, keno, and online lottery.

In January CLS cut a deal with the country’s biggest mobile carrier, China Mobile, that let its customers read lottery information and buy tickets via CLS’s mobile apps.

Alibaba-backed Quixey wants to set the standard for the future of search in China

Quixey, the US-based search engine for apps that Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) invested $50 million into, announced today it has partnered with the Chinese ecommerce titan to launch deep mobile search in China.

That means a few things: first, Quixey will now take over mobile search on YunOS, the Alibaba-made Android skin that comes installed on millions of phones sold in China. YunOS will act as a sort of pilot program before Quixey expands to two other Alibaba properties, and possibly much further if it succeeds.

11.1 Dealer cannot transfer or assign any of its rights or obligations hereunder to any third party or entity, and this Agreement may not be

Look and feel

The stock black rubber band looks simple and minimal, and goes well with pretty much any outfit. The actual tracker can easily be taken out and swapped with different bands for those wanting some variety. It’s almost exactly the same size as the Fitbit, but has a softer, rounder shape compared to the Fitbit’s sharp, square features.

The Mi Band is comfortable to wear and I barely noticed it for the duration of the time I’ve been testing it, which includes while sleeping and showering. The Mi Band is water resistant, but not waterproof. That means you can shower with it, but I probably wouldn’t take it into the swimming pool.

I found the gesture for activating the three LED lights to be quite tricky at times. If you don’t do it just right – move your hand from a hanging position at your side to a wristwatch posture in front of your body – it won’t light up at all. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get just right, and it’s a bit inconvenient from a sitting position.

The tracker seems well-made and durable, which is not something I’m accustomed to saying about Xiaomi products. The accompanying band might need replacing after a few months, though.
