And even if Tencent didn’t have a massive lead in gaming, it has a massive lead in social, which makes promoting games far easier. When pushing a new game, it can easily turn to (for example) its hundreds of millions of WeChat users, who already expect access to games within the app. Alibaba has a large userbase through ecommerce markets Taobao and Tmall, but users don’t play games on any of those platforms, and Alibaba’s previous social efforts haven’t been particularly successful.

Luck is not a factor

Of course, there are those who would argue that Alibaba could still beat Tencent with the help of a little luck. Invest in the right game that happens to go big and you can go from a bit player to a big shot virtually overnight, especially in mobile games. But as Tencent’s results indicate, the company has essentially figured out a way to account for luck, by either buying or copying success.

The company’s typical pattern is to identify an already-successful or highly promising game and acquire it, either by becoming its China publisher or by straight-up buying the development studio. If that doesn’t work, the company will just clone the game itself. It has the development talent to replicate almost anything, and the massive social platforms (WeChat, Tencent Weibo, QQ) to ensure that any game it wants to promote can be blasted out to hundreds of millions of gamers at the drop of a hat.

In fact, even when it has acquired a game, Tencent will often also develop its own copycat version of the game – often adding some local Chinese flavor to it in the process – just to make sure that all its bases are covered.

Striking gold with a game, especially a mobile game, might be somewhat a matter of luck, but Tencent’s dominance of iOS gaming in China this year (and PC gaming almost every year) suggests otherwise. That’s not luck, that’s a system. And Tencent’s results in gaming over the past decade show that whatever you think of it – many have criticized the company’s monetization methods and its copycat tendencies – there’s no doubt that the system works.

What would it take?

To compete with Tencent, Alibaba would need to pour a truly massive amount of money into gaming. It would need to acquire a lot of talented development studios, both foreign and domestic, and it would need to get interested in PC gaming. It would need to create social platforms that could rival Tencent’s to promote and integrate its games into. And it would need to find some way to unseat Tencent’s popular chart-topping games, even though in some cases they’re games that have been consistently popular in China for nearly a decade.

Technically speaking, it’s not impossible. But it’s definitely not happening anytime soon. Alibaba is a massive company and it has a big war chest it can bring to bear on whatever market it wants. But Tencent has a big war chest too, and in the Chinese gaming market, it is both strong and entrenched. Whether you love or hate the penguin, get used to it, because it’s not going anywhere.

Last month, a company controlled by Xiaomi struck a deal with Chinese chipset maker Leadcore, but it isn’t clear if Xiaomi received any patents in the transaction. Leadcore makes the 3G and 4G chipsets using the Chinese TD standard, which is growing more popular around the world.

Xiaomi aims to sell 60 million smartphones across seven countries in Asia this year, and it has big plans to expand to many more countries – including Latin America – next year.

Tencent and New Oriental Joint Ventures Launches English-learning App

Tencent and New Oriental Education & Technology Group, the leading Chinese private school specializing in preparing students for English exams, established a joint venture earlier this year. The JV recently launched its first mobile app, Uda.

Uda, unsurprisingly, is for middle school and college students, to help them prepare for English exams. Behind the app there are a question database and algorithms that recommend questions based on a student’s capabilities. The app also generates analytics reports on users’ performance.

TencentとNew Oriental Education & Technology Groupという、生徒の英語試験対策に特化した大手私立学校は今年始めにジョイントベンチャーを設立した。このJVは最近、初のモバイルアプリUdaをローンチした。

予想通り、Udaはミドルスクールの生徒や大学生向けのもので、英語の試験対策に役立つ。このアプリには問題のデータベースのほか、生徒の能力に応じた問題を出題するアルゴリズムがある。その他、ユーザの成績についての分析レポートも作成する。

There are and have been similar apps on the market. What Uda has leveraged are the resources and advantages of New Oriental. Answer and explanations for questions at Uda are provided by teachers from New Oriental, and some teachers are also on the app answering questions submitted by students. There are also tutorial videos from New Oriental available for free.

Currently the app has only been released on Android and is only available on Tencent’s MyApp store. It is expected services by the joint venture can easily gain users as almost all Chinese internet users go on Tencent’s platforms.

Lancers could have IPO’d but it raised $8.5M instead. COO Adachi explains why

Tech in Asia learned today that freelance platform service Lancers secured US$8.5 million in funding from telco KDDI, human resource firm Intelligence, gaming company Colopl, and venture capital firms Gree Ventures, Globis Capital, and GMO Venture Partners.

The funding is a long-awaited counterpoint to the regular stream of positive PR coming from rival Crowdworks. Crowdworks is a more visible company in Tokyo’s startup community and is not shy about promoting itself. Since June, Crowdworks has sent out 26 press releases to Lancer’s 18.

The biggest news was of course the Crowdworks IPO. The company can expect to raise US$10 million with a market cap of about US$100 million. To go from zero to US$100 million in a scant three years is an impressive feat, but Lancers (which was founded back in 2008) is not worried.

COO Kazuhisa Adachi spoke with Tech in Asia today about the funding and the future of the company.

“More than trying to raise funds, we wanted to strengthen our business relationships so we proceeded with that goal in mind,” Adachi says. The funding deal comes packaged with business partnerships with KDDI, Intelligence, and Gree. “Particularly with KDDI and Intelligence, we can popularize crowdsourcing in the countryside and improve our service for non-internet companies,” he notes.

The strategy was born out of one key statistic: 55 percent of all work requests come from Tokyo, but 75 percent of that work is completed by freelancers outside of the city. The slipping economic power of Japan’s countryside is an open secret and makes the region a perfect target for Lancers.

The money itself will be disbursed for hiring, development, and freelancer support. A Rakuten veteran, Adachi sees the support system working similarly to the online shopping giant’s ecommerce consultant program. Consultants are assigned different shops in the marketplace and work with the owners to increase revenue.

For now, Lancers is not eyeing an IPO. The three-year head start it has on Crowdworks has kept it the market leader but its rival is not backing down. Aside from the IPO, always a cause for celebration in Japan, Crowdworks has some nifty friends as well. Its relationships include Softbank, MIT, Credit Saison, and noted insurance firm Lifenet.

That’s an impressive list but KDDI, Intelligence, and Gree will help keep Lancers in the driver’s seat a little while longer.

WeChat Now Supports Food Delivery Service Foodpanda in Southeast Asia

Online food delivery service Foodpanda is launching a partnership with WeChat across Southeast Asia. The tie-up will allow WeChat users to browse nearby restaurants, receive exclusive promotional offers and order food via Foodpanda. The partnership is now live in Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Philippines, and India.

With a population of 600 million people, an expanding middle class and skyrocketing smartphone sales, Southeast Asia has become a prime market in the rise of social messaging apps such as WeChat, which is looking to build a global presence. WeChat had accumulated 100 million overseas users as of August last year.

Now Alipay the payment service is just one of many internet-based financial services under the Ant Financial Services Group.
