Facebook-owned WhatsApp still leads the way with 500 million monthly active users around the world, but it’s impossible to make a direct comparison between the two apps – or, indeed, any messaging apps – due to their different geographies. For example, most of WeChat’s users are in China, and close to half of Line’s users are in Japan; WhatsApp is huge across several parts of Asia, Europe, and South America, but is not so prevalent in the US.

Tencent is pushing WeChat into markets like India, Mexico, and Brazil, but the company has not provided any country-specific numbers.

Tencent has just revealed its Q1 2014 financials. Before we look at those, it’s worth focusing on WeChat, its hit messaging app. WeChat has now grown to 396 million monthly active users.

That’s up from 355 million at the end of 2013, and has nearly doubled from 195 million exactly a year ago. Here’s our updated chart:

Because Tencent reevaluated the way it calculates monthly active users (MAUs) for WeChat in Q4 last year, it’s not safe to say that WeChat’s growth has slowed dramatically, although it appears that way in the graph.

Long-lost, 1958 recording of Tolkien explaining Lord of the Rings has been unearthed

It’s taken more than 50 years, but a long-lost recording of J.R.R. Tolkien actually breaking down the true meaning of The Lord of the Rings has been recovered. Want to hear a piece of it?

The Huffington Post reports the mythical recording was made at the March 28, 1958, “Hobbit Dinner” in Rotterdam, at a party hosted by Tolkien's Dutch publisher and a bookseller. Approximately 200 fans packed the hall and listened to Tolkien crack wise and talk as candidly as ever about the trilogy that would eventually come to define his career and inspire fantasy writers for years to come.

Discovered by René van Rossenberg in 1993, the recording has been kept secret by the Tolkien expert until now. He has teamed up with Middle Earth Network to raise some money to remaster the reel-to-reel tape recording and raise awareness about its existence.

Aside from the obvious fact that it’s a “lost” recording of Tolkien talking shop, one of the buzziest findings from the recording is the portion in which the author digs into the real meaning behind the books and breaks it all out pretty succinctly. We don’t actually know what he says at this point, which is frustrating, but Rossenberg plans to release the recording at some point later this year.

The show's executive producer, Steven Moffat, has confirmed that a fourth series has been commissioned, with scripts being planned. Previously the show's stars, Cumberbatch and Freeman, announced to the press their desire to return for a fourth series, although co-creator Steven Moffat at the time indicated that BBC executives had not formally commissioned further episodes. Moffat told The Telegraph, "we're all keen to continue", but it is difficult to co-ordinate the lead actors' schedules. Moffat continued, "And obviously Mark [Gatiss] and I have our other commitments too, but it's just a matter of scheduling." Moffat and Gatiss also announced that they have developed plots for a fourth and fifth series.
