“We wanted to make vote by mail really easy,” said Flaxman. “We saw that as the way to modernize the voting system and then thought ‘oh, we also have to do voter registration.’ For us it’s about everything. 360 Search Now No.2 Largest Web Search Engine in China, Here Is Why

360 (NYSE:QIHU) quietly launched its own search engine 5 days ago. We can’t remember how many years it took Google to become the No.2 largest search engine in China, but for 360 it turns out 5 days are enough. News broke out today that 360′s market share on search has soared to be No.2 in China. Baidu surely is still the No.1, but 360 has taken place of Sogou with ~10% market share.

How could that be possible? I called several industry friends including one manager-level 360 staff, the response from them is more or less the same: 10% market share might be a bit exaggerated, but they are not surprised that 360 could achieve this in such a short time.

According to 360′s Q1 financial report, 360 browser has 273millions monthly active users, and its landing page hao.360.cn (which is the default landing page when you open 360 browser) has average 77millions daily unique IP, and the average daily click-through on page is about 295millions. So where the magic happened is that 360 has now set the browser’s and the landing page’s default engine to its own one (see the screenshot below). Before, by default, 360 was using Google search engine. The users of both product don’t even notice the change of the default search engine, they have started using 360′s search engine. With the huge user base, 360′s taking the No.2 would not be a surprise, right?

360 obviously is announcing the war against Baidu, although 360 promises to leave the options to users to choose which search engine (Baidu, Google etc) is the default one. It’s not a big threat for Baidu for now, but 360 might be very tough and ambitious in future (You may still remember the fight between 360 and Tencent). And, sadly that Google’s search market share will be shrinking again without 360′s support.

There were no further official comments from 360′s management level, yet. They only confirmed that, “Yes, we are still testing our own search engine.”

Being a private company it doesn’t usually release quarterly figures, so these stats come via a filing by Yahoo, which owns 41.7 percent of Alibaba Group. The Chinese firm’s net profit for the same period jumped by a factor of six to $220.5 million. Nothing else related to the Hangzhou company was revealed.

Alibaba is currently raising as much as $8 billion so that it can go through with the Yahoo stake repurchase deal that it finally hammered out earlier this year. That’ll see Yahoo – now being steered by Marissa Mayer, formerly of Google – lose half its stake in Alibaba Group, being reduced to about 20 percent.

Renren and Facebook Both Post Net Losses: Does This Spell Trouble for Social Media?

Facebook’s post-IPO doldrums have been the talk of the town in international tech circles, and the company’s posting a net loss for Q2 of this year hasn’t helped. But Renren, the (ugh) “Facebook of China,” appears to be copying more than just Facebook’s trademark design and user experience; it appears the company is also “copying” Facebook’s financial woes.

In its Q2 numbers, the Chinese SNS posted a loss of more than $20 million. The company has seen strong user growth over the past year, with monthly log-in users growing 31 percent to a total of 45 million. But, much like Facebook, it seems to be having trouble converting those users into profit. As you might expect, this has not been great news for Renren’s stock, which took a sharp drop following Tuesday’s Q2 results announcement.

Facebook and Renren now find themselves in a similar quandary, but how will they attempt to escape it? It’s clear that there are at least few kinks to work out of the massive social network model both sites use. Given that they both had strong revenue streams, these Q2 results aren’t apocalyptic — don’t expect either company to disappear overnight. But the fact that they’re both losing millions of dollars means that something needs to change.

This is especially interesting given that newer microblogging social networking sites like Twitter and Sina Weibo are also having problems with monetization.
